The friends of Mr. Samuel Jefferies are glad to see him able to be out again after his severe fall from a horse some time ago. Mr. J. C. Lipscomb is having a new coat of paint put on his residence on Victoria avenue, which adds very much to its appearance. Cotton began to come in early yes terday morning, and quite a number of bales were sold during the day. The price paid was 9:75. J. L. Alexander is having the sign in front of his place of business changed from "Beer Dispensary” to "Cherokee Bottling Works.” The keys to the box with $20.00 in silver at the Shoe Store are all gone, and keyholders are requested to call Tuesday (today) or any time after and try their keys. The Carnival has come; and the at tractions are now open to the public on the vacant lot extending from front of the Smith hardware store to the corner opposite the National bank. J. H. Crews is back in his old posi tion with the Gaffney Manufacturing Company, after an absence of several months in Tennessee. Mr. Crews’ friends are glad to have him with them again. Revs. Hammett and Owens will preach at Abingdon next Sunday. There will be two sermons, one in the morning and the other in the after noon; and the ladies are requested to bring dinner. Contractor L. Baker has a force en gaged at remodelling the old Baptist schoolhouse and fitting it up as a dwelling for J. L. Alexander, who pur chased the property some time ago. The rain came in a little ahead of schedule time, however, and began falling Sat urday morning in light showers. Sat urday night, though. It came in earn est and fell all through the night, and up to 9 or 10 o’clock Sunday morning, when it changed to snow. The snow came down thickly and In large flakes for an hour or more, but as the ground was so wet f:om the previous rain, it melted as fast as it fell, and none lay on the ground for any considerable length of time. The wind also blow hard at times, the thermometer was down about the forty mark, and altogether It was about as disagreeable a day as one would care to see; making people hug the fire closely and feel glad that no business called them forth from their snug and cozy quarters. Yesterday morning was fair, and the air crisp and bracing. The mer cury was down to thirty-two early in the morning and ice was plentiful. The extra term of court called for Cherokee county, to finish up a large amount of business left over from the last regular term, convened yes terday morning with Judge Frank B. Gary, of Abbeville, as special presid ing Judge. The solicitor, court ste nographer and attorneys were all on hand at the opening, and after the usual preliminaries, the business of| the session was at once taken up. There are over twenty cases to be heard and tbe term will probably be continued for three weeks. The first case called yesterday was Chadwick vs. the Gaffney Manufacturing com pany, which occupied the attention of the court throughout the remainder of the day.
