I ii THE LEDGER, Published Tuesday and by Ed H. DeCamp. Friday NOTES AND COMMENTS. We are sometimes shocked by the foolishness of seemingly sensible men. • » • It’s a powerful mean man that will steal from orphans and pose as a moralist or an advocate of justice. • » • Enoree Presbytery meets at Salem church today. The Ledger, on behalf of the citizens of Cherokee, extends to the delegates a most cordial wel come and wishes for them a pleasant and profitable stay among the best people on e- rth. We are delighted to have them with us in our midst. • • • A lady subscriber from Blacksburg writes: "1 do not want to miss a sin gle copy, therefore 1 enclose one dol lar for my renewal. I am pleased with the paper throughout. 1 am not prepared to say which feature I like best, for I like it all. 1 think the edi torials fine.” All of which is duly ap preciated at this end of the line. » • • One of the most delightful pieces of newspaper work that has come to our notice recently is a letter from Col. das. T. Bacon to his paper, the Edge- field Chronicle. The dear Colonel has been chasseing with the “quality” at Hot Springs, Va., and his satire is delicious. It would be as interesting to know what the “quality” thought of the Edgefield bard as it is to know his impressions of the “smart set.” • • • A school boy in the first grade while on his way to school one day re cently, stopped a busy business man who was on his way to his business, and putting out his school work with a familiar air asked the other to see if it was all right. The first impulse of the business man was to dismiss the little fellow, but he did not resist the second and more kindly impulse to take the paper extended and ex amine it. He was amply repaid when he discovered that the work was cor rect, for he knew the boy to be of the reckless, don’t-care sort, and he complimented him on his achieve ment and in a modest way encouraged the boy to greater efforts. How much better to do this than to discourage the lad! Who can tell how far-reach ing this kindly deed may be? True, it was not ranch to do, but it sent that boy on to s ! ■ t day with a glad heart, v . .. . i he had been turned aside gruffly and with indif ference it might have wounded the boy’s spirit, and to some extent dis couraged him. That man must have remembered that he was once a boy. Anyway, it’s dollars to doughnuts that his heart is in the right place, and that his home is a happy one. • • • The whiskey evil is one that has perplexed the people of all ages. There are many notions as to the best method of handling the question, it was believed that the dispensary was the happy medium. Conducted in an honest manner and entirely eliminat ed from politics, with all the restric tions strictly adhered to, we believe it better than the open barroom, but. we believe prohibition even better than the dispensary. Dispensary advo cates make much of the profit feature of the law. They fail to remember that for every dollar the State and county receive for granting the privi lege that it deals out something which destroys the manhood of its citizens. Is it right for the State to take away from one class of citizens that it may give to another? Every dollar taken from the drunken element to send the children of the sober element to school makes the drunking element that much poorer and thus enriches the sober element. This very same class sober element would denounce as high-handed robbery and system that would take their corn and cotton and convert them into the cribs and ware houses of another without compensa tion, and yet they are satisfied to be robbed by the State, or rather given in exchange for their money some thing that robs them of manhood, character and respectablity. Away with the system that degrades one class of citizens to enrich another! Away with the system that makes paupers of some children in order to educate others! Old People’s Meeting. The Old People’s Union of the Cher okee Avenue Baptist church held a meeting Sunday afternoon in the ! church which was largely attended, I ;a great many young people being . sectators. The pastor, Itev. Mr. Uam- 1 rick, assisted in the service. Old-time hymns were sung and* prayer was of fered by several of the members and earnest and feeling addresses were delivered by Messrs. Gaston Little john, G. W. Stegall. D. J. Bright, Mr. Crow and others. The meeting MONEY LOANED. JURY LIST.
