The festivities were inaugurated by a parade comprising several military organizations; the mounted staff of Governor Blanchard of Louisiana, the directors of the exposition, President Francis of the exposition. Atlanta, Sept. 14.—Captain R. M. Hitch and four commissioned officers who served under him at Statesboro during the recent lynching at that place, will be tried by courtmarti&l. The court of inquiry ia its report filed with Governor Terrell brought in dictments against these five on vari ous charges and Governor Terrell at once appointed the courtmartial to try the quintet of soldier defendants. The charge preferred against Cap tain Hitch and the four lieutenants un der him are all of a sensational na ture, and the trial will be awaited with the utmost interest by military men and the public generally all over Geor gia. Lieutenant McIntyre, of Savannah, and the privates and non-commission ed officers who figured in the now fa mous incident, are commended in th<5 report of the court of inquiry. Ona non-commissioned officer and two pri vates are mentioned by name as hav ing signally performed their duty. These are: Corporal E. W. Short- ridge, of company I, who loaded his piece and threatened to slmot, thus standing off a portion of the mob; ! company Musician W. E. McDougal, of company A, who did likewise, and Private Joseph F. McGuire, of company D, who, after his gun was taken from him, used a piece of board with telling ; effect. Prominent Savannah Citizen Dies Af ter Operation. Savannah, Ga., Sept. 14.—Major Gan land M. Ryals died Tuesday at the Savannah hospital, where he was op erated upon Saturday for gangrene, his right log being taken off. Mayor Ryals was one of the most prominent planters in Georgia. Hu was a pioneer in the truck growing industry, having extensive lands near this city under cultivation. He also had a large plantation and peach farm in worth county, this state. His prom inence in agriculture had won him an Tugalo Institute Opens. Carnesville, Ga., Sept. 14.—Tuesday Tugalo institute opened its doors with the finest prospects for years. The opening day showed a roll call of 121 pupils, about -V) of whom are boarders. There are quite a number of children in town who will enter in a few days and the number in a short time, it ia safe to say, will be 200. The faculty is composed of Jacob S. Hunter, prim cipal; A. W. C., Sept. 14.—Bryant Par- tin, the G-yearold son of Frank Par tin. was smothered to death whilfl playing in a pile of lint cotton in front of his father’s home, near Raleigh.
