Postmaster Folger’s many friends are pleased to see him out again after a two weeks’ illness. Work on the National Bank build ing and the Settlemyer building has been considerably retarded lately on account of frequent showers. Mr. B. G. Clary will occupy the corner store ot Mr. A. X. Wood’s new buildings, with a fresh meat and grocery market about the first of September Son Manning, colored, who was ar rested Monday, charged with stealing from the person, had a preliminary hearing before Magistrate Bridges Tuesday and was released. On the loth inst. Mr. Z. A. Robert son will open a first class fresh meat market.in one of Mr. A. N. Wood’s new brick stores on Limestone street, next to the Kandy Kitchen. The many friends of Mr. R. O Ballenger were glad to see him able to be at his place of business Wed nesday afternoon, after several days confinement at his home by sickness. * Miss Annie Sanford is expected to arrive in the city this (Friday) after noon, and tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock she will he at the City Hall to meet with the children and arrange lor her spectacular plky. The meeting at Mabry’s mill yester day was largely attended, quite a number from Gaffney going out. The barbecue served by Mabry and Foster was. as might have been expected, a complete success and the day was p-ofltahly and pleasantly spent by all who took advantage of the occasion. Ben Hill Brown, an intelligent and well educated young man of Cow- liens, who has been taking a course in law in the Cniversity of Virginia, is with Butler A- Osborne during his vacation. Mr. Brown’s attainments and energy bespeak for him a bright future, which we trust he may fully realize. When it comes to utilization, Flaw. Mrs. and Granny Picker cap the stack. They sent us some samples of peas measuring twenty-five inches in length which they raised around the front porch. The vines serve as a i shade to the piazza while. Flaw says, to cook the peas like snap beans, ’ they raley air good.” A petition to the county supervisor to order an election to submit to the people of Cherokee county the ques tion of "Dispensary” or "No Dispen sary,” has been started in The Led ger office and is being numerously signed by the Cherokee voters. The petition is on the counter in the bus iness office of The Ledger and ink and pens are handy to it, so all can , put their names to it who want to. It will take the names of between firth and 7'"i voters to the petition to have the election ordered. The rainfall yesterday afternoon was extremely heavy for a short time but the only damage that we have heard of was to Suber’s Kandy Kitch- k en two doors above The Ledger, where the w ier ran into the house from the alleyway via. the hack door so heavily that it did damage to the extent of about $25.00. The Kandy Kitchen was literally flooded for a short time. Proprietor Suber re mained cheerful, however, through it all. and no one would have guessed from his demeanor that he had been in a flood. A Popular Gaffney Lady Wedded Last Wednesday. Wednesday morning at the resi dence of R. S. Lipscomb, on Freder ick street. Miss Blanche Wilson, ot this city, and Mr. J. E. Bagwell, of Spartanburg, were united in mar riage. The ceremony was performed by Rev. E. O. Watson, of Spartan- 1 burg. The engagement had been kept a secret and only a very few friends of the couple were pdesent, among them | being the following from out of town: Mr. E. C. Bagwell, Mr. Walter Baugh man, Mrs. W. D. Wright, Mrs. S. M. Bagwell. The bride and groom left on the 9:42 train for Toxaway to spend some time, and from there they will go to St. Louis to take in the exposition. Mr. Bagwell is a well known mer chant of Spartanburg, while Miss Wilson has been engaged with the well known firm of Carroll, Carpenter & Byers, of this lady and has made charming little lady and has made many friends here who extend to her and her husband heartiest congratu lations. Too much cannot he said in praise of the play; too much cannot be said in praise of Miss Sanford. Not only is the story interesting but as an amateur spectacular play it has never been equalled in Athens and compares favorably with the best in the professional line. Miss Sanford's ability to train the children in so short a time is marvelous. And one is amazed at the snap throughout the entire performance, and the short in termissions between scenes, consider ing that over one hundred children are on the stage. Complete stock ot Staple Groceries always Reunion in Chester. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Thomas went to Chester yesterday on an invitation from the survivors of Capt. Hardin’s company, 6th S. C. Volunteers, to be present at their reunion which will he held today at New Hope church in Chester county. When Capt. Hardin's company started to the war in 18fil, a beautiful silk flag which had been made by la dies of Chester county was presented ; to the company by Mrs. Thomas, who was then a Miss Wilkes, and now af ter forty-three years her presence is again desired at a reunion of the remaining members of the company. The occasion will no doubt be one of pleasure for Mrs. Thomas and the veterans, though not unmixed with sad recollections of bygone times.
