Charles E. Smith, of Goucher, was in the city Wednesday selling some of the finest watermelons we have seen this season. L. Baker will in a short time begin to build a new brick storehouse on the portion of his lot next to the W. Sam Lipscomb building, on Limestone street. Mr. and Mrs. \V. H. StJohn. two of Gaffney’s most worthy old citizens, moved this week to Trough, in Spar tanburg county, to make their home with a son. Rev. W. R. Richardson. D. D.. edi tor of the Southern Christian Advo cate, will preach at Buford Street M. E. church, South, next Sunday morn ing and evening. A protracted meeting will begin at State Line church on the first Sun day in August. The pastor. Rev. J. H. Smith, expects to have assistance in the conducting of the meeting. Some of the machinery of the newly built Pacolet mill is running and many of the old employes of the mill who were there before the June flood last year are returning to their old homes and being given employment. A four-legged chicken has been on exhibition at the Cherokee drug store for several days. It was hatched on the farm of Hon. Wm. Jefferies and seems to be doing well, with prospects of a long and happy chicken life. It was reported that during one of the hard rains last week, Mr. W. H. Wright’s mill on Thlckety was washed away. But we are glad to learn that it was an error and that Mr. Wright’s mill is o. k., and grinding every day. When you give an option on your mineral lands, mike it void unless the parties go to prospecting in a given number of days. It is not prof itable to have other people controll ing your property if you get no re turn for it. Lt. Col. J. G. Wardlaw, of the First South Carolina Regiment of militia, which is in camp in Columbia, has re turned to the city. Col. Wardlaw is naturally a military man, and his ef ficiency as an officer and general mili tary bearing while in camp in Colum bia attracted general attention and elicited much complimentary com.- ment. Mrs. J. C. Allison, who accidently fell last fall at Mr. W. J. Daniel’s home and broke her hip, having re covered from her injury was visiting at Mr. Daniels’ again last Saturday, and again fell, breaking her right shoulder. Mrs. Allison is quite an aged lady, but we are glad that she is standing up under her injuries very well. The Gaffney and Blacksburg ball teams played a pretty game at Gaff ney Wednesday afternoon. Both sides played some good ball, but our neigh bors from across the Broad were simply outclassed and lost. The score was 12 to 4 in favor of Gaffney. We trust that Blacksburg will strengthen up its team and come again, for it now has some good hall players in it. Old folks say that the 25th day of July is the first dog day, and it is an old saying that if it rains on that day it will rain every day for forty days. It rained on the 25th in Gaff ney, also on the 2(;th and *27th, and we were looking for rain yesterday when this was written. For the past week the colored peo- ple of Gaffney have been distributing circulars and making big preparations for “a grand time for the colored people,” as announced in their circu lars. The “grand time” announced included among its attractions a “great Odd Fellows barbecue” at Limestone Springs, and began yester day morning by the Hickory Grove colored band marching from the de pot to Dunton’s chapel to the tap of the drum. The procesison was formed at the chapel and moved off to the Springs in splendid order under the command of the marshals of the day, A. Ashe, J. B. Brown and Van Castles. And all inspired by the strains of intoxicating music rendered by the band, kept the step in a man ner that showed their earnestness in their work, and their eagerness to reach the gate at the Springs that Alex Dawkins was keeping. At the Springs the annual address was delivered to the Odd Fellows by Prof. Allen White, of Yorkville, which was followed by addresses from sev eral others. All were instructive and entertaining. The barbecue was well conducted rid much enjoyed. A game of ball was played and other amusements were engaged in. We forgot to state in the outset that Will Petty was the master of ceremonies, which he said would be run to have everything carried on right, and at this writing we hear that the best of order is prevailing. The program calls for several events today which well be reported in our next issue. Union Men Meet. The Carpenters and Joiners Union of this city held an open meeting in their hall last Monday evening, which was presided over by the president, Mr. Joe Gaffney, and to which a num ber of friends were invited and en- terta’ned in a handsome manner. Addresses were made by Rev. W. T. Thompson, L. Baker and others. Light refreshments were served, and every event of the evening was much en joyed. The whole affair was so pleas ant that those present congratulated themselves on their good fortune. Working Night and Day.
