Stacy, Fresident. J. G. Wardlaw, V.-President, D. C. Ross, Cashier. The farmers are beginning to cultivate their young corn. They report a good stand. There was a big crowd in the city Sat urday and business with the merchants was brisk. F rom all over the county we hear of farmers being in good condition and crops coming up well. Treasurer Gooding has issued execu tions against delinquent taxpayers and Sheriff Thomas and Deputy Austell are trying to make collections. We tender our sincere thanks to Mrs. Nannie Geddis for a box of excellent strawberries which she kindly sent us yesterday. They were the first we have iiad this season, and we enjoyed them immensely. Bob Gaffney, one of Gaffney’s worst negroes, cut Fate Alexander, a strong second to him, with a knife yesterday about 2 p. m. The cutting occurred at the home of Mary Bostic, in the northern part of the city. The wound was in flicted in the right shoulder, and but for the shoulder blade might have proved serious. Dr. j. N. Nesbitt dressed the wound. Bob ran at once and is still at large. Two rival juvenile baseball teams hitched here last Friday afternoon, one under the management of Dick Ji-fferies, the other under Norment Jones. Nine innings were played, the result being a tie. Three more innings were played, when the score stood 5 to 1 in favor of Jefferies’ team. The batteries were: Olin Curry and Dick Jefferies and Stew art Gaffney for Jefferies, and Bryan Bell, Bep Gaines and Norman Jones for Jones. In conversation with one of the most successful farmers in the county, a few days ago. he said that the farm lands generally had been prepared l>etter this year than almost any he could remember before; that the dry winter and spring had enabled the farmers to get more of their liottom lands in fix, and that if no disaster liefell their low lands that there would l>e more corn made in this county this year than has been made in any one year for many years past. This rej>ort, coming, as it does, from so high a source, is encouraging indeed, and shows that Cherokee farmers, while good cotton growers, realize the fact that to prosjier in their business, they must make their provisions at home.
