St. Petersburg, May 4.—12:40 p. m. —The gloom which prevailed here yesterday was almost completely dis pelled this morning when the people read the story of the glorious light made by General Sassulitch’s hand ful of rough regiments against the flower of the mikado’s legions at the Yalu, and of the utter defeat of Vice Admiral Togo’s new attempt to sea! the entrance to Port Arthur. A Sanguinary Contest. It is now plain that not more than 1,000 Russians actually engaged in the fighting at the Y’alu engagement! against the Japanese army, of a total strength of between 30,000 and 40,000. The losses on both sides, which are expected to reach 1,000 and pos sibly 1,200 in the Russian force and twice that number for the Japanese, make it one of the bloodiest fights. At the river crossing the Japanese dead lie piled up literally in heaps, and General Kuroki’s success was purchased at such a heavy cost that the Russians are disposed to regard as rather a defeat than a victory for him. Fought With Bulldog TenacTly. General Kuropatkin’s dispatch shows that the Russians fought with such a bulldog tenacity and bravery against the overwhelming superiority of the enemy that the latter’s nominal victory was eclipsed by the prowess of the czar’s soldiers. New Chwang. which is on a river, and about 30 miles from the sea, could not possibly be taken except as the result of an attack of at least two or three days’ duration. Cloudburst In Texas Interferred With Traffic. Austin, Tex., May 4.—As a result of the cloudburst that visited central Texas and this section late Tuesday afternoon., not a train is moving m or out of this city to the north. About 5 miles of the International and Great Northern tracks have been washed out north of here and trains have not op erated since yesterday. Five children were drowned last night in a creek 5 miles from this city. Fields are under from 4 to 8 inches of water to the south of here for lb miles. Miss., May 4.—A deputy Fnited States marshal, armed with a big bundle of subpoenas, will leave today for the whitecapper districts ot Lincoln, Amite and Franklin counties. The object of his trip is to bring witnesses to testify before the feder al grand jury now in session regard ing the acts of whitecappers in driv ing negroes from government home steads, and some surprising develop ments are promised if the witnesses wanted can be found.
