Last Tuesday we had something to say concerning the rather high-hand ed proceedings of the Southern Rail way Company in their dealings to wards this town. It seems that almost every man in the place is in full sympathy with the railw'ay company, as few seem to be willing to defend them selves. We cannot believe that the business men of Gaffney are unmind ful of their interests. Perhaps we are going at the ifiatter in the wrong way. If there be a better way to arouse the people to a sense of their duty we would like to be apprised of it. From Sunday’s Anderson Mail we gain the intelligence that that thriving city has been so fortunate as to have the freight discriminations against it removed. Anderson is on a branch of the Southern. Yet Anderson is given the same rates as Spartanburg and Greenville, while Gaffney, which is on the main line, must pay a higher rate than Spartanburg, Greenville or Anderson. Why is it that the South ern Railway Co. will haul freight from eastern points to Spartan burg and Greenville, twenty-two and fifty five miles further than Gaffney at the same rate that it will bring it to this place? Can anyone tell us? Why is it that a person can ship goods from Spar tanburg to Blacksburg, or vice versa, cheaper than from Gaffney to either of these points? These are questions which may be answered by the rail way company to their own satisfac tion, but they cannot satisfactorily explain it to a discriminating public. In the itter of passenger service we have liitle or nothing to complain of. As a matter of fact no intelligent person will accept this as a tirade against the Southern or an attack on its officials or attaches. It Is a plain statement of a condition which should not exist. We know that the attaches at this place are weary of the continu al complaint that is constantly com ing to them. But they are powerless to act. There is something radically w'rong with the freight charges at this place and the business people here should get together and attempt to do some thing for their own relief. In Ander son the Chamber of Commerce took up the matter and accomplished re sults quietly. All the kicking we might do from now to doomsday would nut help matters. We, alone, can t bring the Southern to a realiza tion of their proper attitude toward our people, but we can, with the help of the business men of this place, at tempt to do something. Anderson will save from $30,000 tr $.10,000 a year in freights, so we are told. It may be Gaffney might be able to effect a like saving. The proper way to go about this business, it seems to us, would be for the citizens to organize a business league or chamber of commerce. Such an organization, with live and progressive officials, could do much to promote the social as well as t’u material growth of Gaffney. He w'as firm as a rock, lie could say "un- nice” things in a nice way and nice things in an “tin-nice” way. He per haps made a greater impress in a few years upon the reading public of North Carolina than any writer of his day and time, and we mourn with the Observer in the loss of so bril liant an intellect and so genial a gentleman. * * • In the communication in last Fri day’s Ledger signed E. K. B.., the compositor inadvertently omitted a portion of the last sentence, which materially changed the meaning. The sentence should have read: “Tolbert, of Buffalo, is right in his article when he places these teachers in heaven and the trustees in hell, and leaves them there.” • • • So long as the legislature of South Carolina is dominated by the paid attorneys of the Southern Railway, just so long may we expect to be discriminated against. The Rural School Libraries. County Superintendent of Educa tion Jas. L. Walker has just received the list of books and prices adopted by the State hoard of education for use in the rural school libraries. He lias the money ready for three of these libraries, aggregating $90, and he desires to hear from other sections. Those desiring libraries only have to make up $10 by private subscription. This can easily be done in a single af ternoon, even where the people call themselves poor. The season for lemonade and ice cream will soon be here, and by that you can collect enough nickels and dimes to make the $10.00. After this $10.00 is raised by private subscription then get the trustees to draw a warrant in favor of the County Superinten- tendent of Education. Mr. Walker will approve such warrants ami then apply to the State board for $10.00.. After Mr. Walker gets the $30.00 it will he turned over to the trustees, who will buy the library. For every library ($30.00 worth of books), the publishers will furnish a substantial book case with lock and key, free of charge. All this will be sent, freight prepaid, to the nearest railroad sta tion. The State board made this con tract with the Educational Publishing Company of Atlanta, Ga. This com pany is reliable and is under con tract and bond. It is illegal to buy from other houses or agents. You can find a full list of all books in Mr. Walker's office and the price. Singing Convention. The next session of the Broad River Interdenominational Singing Convention will meet with the Provi- dence church on Saturday before the first Sunday in May, 1904.
