Tlie l^etlyrcr, PUBLISHKI) rUESDAY AKI) FRIDAY. BY Ed. H. DkCaMF. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Jim Tillman has announced his withdrawal from the race foj- Con gress from the second district. This is the first real service this man has ever rendered the people of South Carolina, and we give him credit for it. * * * The editors of the Columbia State and the Orangeburg Patriot are too nice to be spitting at each other. Come, gentlemen, come! The very uncomplimentary things you have been saying of each other lately is not in keeping with the dignity and generous heart of either of you. • • * While it is always a pleasure to us to know of the success of Gaffney boys, we note with gratification, the distinction achieved by our young friends, LaFar Lipscomb and Vernon Baker, in the oratorial contest at Clemson. They are both deserving young gentlemen and we feel that they will always reflect credit upon their worthy parents and the town from which the} hail. • * • mense benefit to our teachers, and I feel sure that you will attend Please notify me by postal or otherwise bow many will attend, so I cau arrange the matter with Mr. Martin, the State superintendent of education. More Free Seed. Washington, D. C., March 5th, 1904. Mr. Ed. H. DeCamp, Gaffney, S. 0. Dear Sir;—In sending out my quota of garden seeds from the department of agriculture I have endeavored to cover my congressional district thor oughly. It may lie, however, that some have been missed, so I have sent some packages of seed in bulk to a number of points. Knowing the facil ities that you have for distributing them, I accordingly directed some time ago that 100 packages be sent to your address. They should have reached you by this time, hut if not you will receive them within a few days. Please distribute the packages among those that you think would like to have them, reaching in partic ular, whenever possible, such as may J not have gotten any already. Hoping to hear from you whenever b 1 ! I can be of any service to you, 1 am, Yours very truly, D. E. Finley. [The seed have arrived and we will be glad to give them out to those who may call for them.—Ed.] fc- r1 t: A Card to the Teachers. Please let every white teacher no tify me if he or she will attend the summer school. I am specially anx ious that we have this school, but we will not l>e aide to get it unless a suf ficient number attend to warrant the expense. The State superintendent of education writes mo unless a larger number of teachers attend he will have to combine two or three, or more counties into a district sch<xd, and conduct it in a central town. In this case l fear our county will lose it. If as many as forty of our teach ers will attend I think I can secure the school here.
