We are glad to see J. C. Jefferies, Esq., out again after a few days of confinement to his home on account of a slight attack of rheumatism. Mr. Arthur Gaffney, of this city, and Miss Ida McSwain, of Buffalo, surprised their friends Monday night by “quietly stealing away" and get ting married. Rev. J. M. Steadman next Sunday evening will preach the sermon to young people on the Fifth Command ment, which the rain prevented be ing preached last Sunday evening. The Bible class of the Sunday school of the Buford Street M. E. church, South, has been reorganized with Mr, J, B. Boyd teacher. It Is hoped that those who formerly be longed to the class will rejoin and new members will be welcomed. A play full of heart interest, pathos and comedy, and one of the best of Southern plays ever written, will be seen at the Star Theatre tonight when Mr. J. O. Champion will be seen in his beautiful play, “Heart of Alabama,” supported by a cast of Gaffney’s best talent. The railroad commission was in session in Columbia Monday, and had under consideration the depots on the Southern railway. Owing to a de sire in Gaffney for the location and character of the depot to be changed some members of the commission and officers of the road may meet here in a short time. J. C. Carpenter, of Henrietta, N. C., was in the city yesterday. Mr. Car- s penter was one of the first settlers j in Gaffney, but has been away several years. He and his friends enjoyed the hearty hand shakes of each other and Mr. Carpenter expressed his great pleasure at the wonderful pro gress of what was once his home. The secretary of State issued a commission to the Whittaker Cotton Mill Company of Blacksburg Monday. The company starts off with a capital of $50,000, with most of it taken in Blacksburg. Mr. J. R. Killian, a well \ known practical mill man, has inter ested himself in the enterprise and will probably be the manager. If so, success Is assured the enterprise. We learn that the Southern rail way company is making preparations to build a thirty foot wooden addition to its old board depot in this city. The old depot, besides being in the limits where no wooden buildings are allowed to be built, is an eyesore. To make this thirty foot wooden addi tion to the old depot is a flagrant vio lation of a cjty ordinance, and should not allowed by the city authori ties. A Few Facts. Longfellow could take a worthless sheet of paper, write a poem on it, and make it worth $5,000. That’s genius. Rockefeller can write a few words on a sheet of paper and make it worth $1,000,000.
