Today is Christmas, the festival O' the Christian church in memory uf the birth of Christ. The time when the festival was first observed is not known with certainty, but it is spok en of in the third century by Clement of Alexandria, and in the latter part of the fourth century Chrysostom speaks of it as of great antiquity As to the day on which it was cele brated there was long considerable diversity, but by the time of Chrysos tom the Western church had fixed the 25oh day of December, though no certain knowledge of the day of Christ’s birth existed. The Eastern church, which previously had gener ally favored the 6jh of January, gradually adopted the same di r .e Many believe that the existence of heathen festivals celebrated on or about this day had great influence on its being selected I and the Brumalia, a Riman festival held at the winter solstice, when the son is, as it were,, born anev, has often been instane d as having a strong bearing on the question. In the Roman Catholic, Greek, Anglican and Lutheran churches, there is a special religious service for Christmas day,, and, con trary to the general rule, a Roman Catholic priest can celebrate three masses on this day. Most other eburchns hold no fixed service, but a special service is held iu many churches. Almost everywhere throughout Christendom the day is kept as as holiday and is the occasion of social enjoyment. This, in brief, is a history of the day. In this God- favored land of ours it is especially fitted that we celebrate the day in a becoming manner. Let your heart go out with gladness toward all man kind. Throw off any bitterness that may have lodged in your soul. Strive to do some kind deed that may bring joy to some benighted one. Let good cheer, but not that which comes from the flowing bowl, prevail. C. & G. E. Railway 1 from Camden to Blacksburg, found ; over 800 new crossties needed in every mile of it. It is suggested that if a similar inspection uf other roads in the State of greater pretentions than the S. C% & G. E. were made enough rotten crossties would be found to alarm the public. The sacred day on which our Saviour was boru was not intended to be devoted to drinking whiskey, general rowdyism and making homes miserable by drunken husbands and sons, but for tbe higher purpose of His worship and elevated social en joyment. The News and Courier suggests that if Legate and Lever are unseated for Prioleau ana CarHzier, the condi tion of the negroes in South Carolina will be improved in no way whatever, for other peraocrats would be return ed at the next election. P Hill the morning he was shot, and I also saw General Stonewall Jackson the night he was wounded in tb.J thigh He was shot by a man that belonged to the 37th regiment. The shooting occurred on the plank road that leads from Fred ericksburg to Orai ge Court House. The next morning one of General Lane’s staff was killed and I had to take care of the dead body and ac company it to Richmond. I could tell you aii something about the hard times, and the good times, about the pathetic calls for water from the dy ing soldiers, and how their sufferings were relieved by the brave boys that risked their lives to relieve the thirst from thetr canteens, etc., bu l it *is an often repeated story; sol will close by saying that^ the old soldiers appreciate the attention shown them by the younger genera tion.
