Dear Sir:—At the general invita tion of Charleston given through the newspapers of the State to meet with a committee of 1 heir business men at the Columbia Hotel, Columbia,S. C., September 22,|1903, quite a number of ciiies were represented At this meet ing subjeetjof discrimination in local freight rates, irregular schedules and vary poor railroad service in South Carolina, was discussed. After much j had been said on all copies it was de- | cided to take action first on local , freights, as the whole State was suf fering from this, more perhaps, than either of the o‘ber two named. New ! it doesn’t need any argument on the local freight situation to impress you, ■ as the figures enclosed will argue for j themselves. Compare what we are paying in South Carolina with North Carolina and Virginia. The slip en closed merely shows a part of this extortion and when you go into other classes B, C, etc., the discrepancy is equally as great. Now there is but one thing to be done, and this we have decided to do, and want your hearty co-operation; pull together and hire the best legal talent in the State or any other State and fight like business men for our rights Save every man that consumes, as well as those that sell, the money rhat we are rightfully entitled to. You know we have to fight, so let us be equal to the occasion. The object of this letter is to try to stir you up to action. Please give it your im mediate attention. Charleston and the Convention as sembled agreed that our interest was the same, viz: To have us low local freight rates as Virginia. This means to and from your city, no compro mise in favor of any special city will be accepted, but favor all or none. This being the case, can’t you get your city to help pay the expenses of the fight 9 We cannot name the orice as we do not know what it will cost, but only wish to have your guaranteed backing. If we are sue- ] cessful, which we certainly expect to ; be, you cannot call the price paid at I cost but as gain. You can name the j amount you are willing to guarantee, i Please give this a prompt reply as we (Jo-tO-Date Job Print- have no time to lose. Answer Yes or ^ No. Yours truly, R. S. Ligon, Anderson, S. C. R. B. Rhett, Charleston, S. C. B. R. Cooner, Columbia, S. C. Accompanying the letter was the following tables illustrating the freight rates: THE LOCAL FREIGHTS. The following table shows the charge made by the railroads for local freights in the States of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and will show, better than anything else, thejustnessof the fight the busi ness men of Charleston and the Pied- "VX/Vm \X/f> T-Jnrv* moct section are making before the VV Xly W C XlOpC railroad commission for better rates: to have Your Trade We expect to gain and main tain the trade of careful drug buyers because we offer every inducement that appeals to ob serving people.
