M. Steadman will preach a special sermon on Sunday school work at Buford Street church Sunday morning. There will be no evening service owing to revival services in the First Baptist church. Messrs W. N. Austell and W. Sam Lipscomb have purchased the stock of goods of Mr, J. R. Little john on Limestone, the deal being closed Tuesday. They will continue the business at the same stand under the firm name of Austell & Lipscomb. W. M. Maness has engaged Mr. A. W. Hawkins to look after his store and fruit stand on Grenard street. Mr. Hawkins is a polite and cour teous salesman and patrons of the store will find him attentive to their wants. Mr. Maness himself, may be found at T. W. Williamson & Co’s market on Limestone street. Tuesday night about eleven o’clock Mr. Sam Mercer saw a negro man at his woodpile stealing wood. He shot at him and missed him, but followed him so close that he brought him to a hault. Chief of police and Officer Hallman were a block or two away when they beard the pistol and went to see what it meant. When they arrived on the scene the negro ran, but was followed and caught by them and Mr. Meroer. The negro was locked up and Wednesday morning the mayor gave him an option on $15 or thirty days. He ohose the days and joined the good roade class. A Simke Fight. Mr. W. 8. Gaffney, from “down on the river,” was in to see us 8aturday and gave us an account of a snake . been fight which he witnessed on the Tues day before. The battle was between a king snake and a pilot and the scene of ac tion was or. Mrs. J. VV. Gaffney’s place, a few miles from the city. The first Mr. Gaffney saw of the fight was when the two snakes came roll ing out from some bushes on the roadside, squirming and twisting and locked in a death struggle. The king Hathaway,~mTI) snake had his fangs fastened in his enerney’s throat and his body tied around him in three different knots. The witness did not interfere, but 1 watched the battle closely and in about threeminutes from the time the snakes first came into view, the pilot wae dead. After the fight the victor proceeded to swallow the dead body of his adversary, and finally crawled away in the bushes with a portion of the tail end sticking out of his mouth. The snakes were young ones, the king snake being about eighteen inches long and the pilot a little shorter, though of the same size in body. People, as a general thing, have become somewhat skeptical about these "snake stories;” but Mr. Gaff ney vouches for the truth of every detail of this fight, and says he can produce another witness to the fight to substantiate bis assertions if necessary. the PTOK SALK—Old newspapers »at- -T dred.
