W. SCOTT.
P)75S N. Fifteenth Street,
Philadelphia, Pa., March 10, 1901.
Lear Sirs: I hate now used four bottles
of your Malt Whiskey, and think I owe my
life to this whiskey. I am 07 years old and
have had cartarrh of the nose, throat and
head for twenty-five years or more. I
a:n hard of hearing. About six weeks ago
I was ~o sick I could not eat, sleep and
har ’iv able to walk. Felt more like dying
malt mms
than living. Was under a doctor’s care
and taking all kinds of drugs and medi
cine, douches, solutions in nose, etc. The
doctor nearly blew my head away with a
potverful air pump—medicated air, he
called it. It did absolutely nothing in my
case. I threw everything away—medicine,
air pump, douches—and commenced on
Duffy’s Pure Malt Whiskey. I felt better
from the start. I take one ounce with
water before and after each meal and at
bedtime, and now, after using four bottles,
I can eat and drink and sleep well, and I
feel better to-day than I have for twenty
years. I was opposed to all kinds of liquor
and used none for twenty-five years. I
use Duffy’s as a medicine only, and shall
continue to use it as long as I live, if I
can get it. I know it will keep me alive,
and may in time improve my hearing. I
hope it will. Yours very sincerely,
W. SCOTT.
A LATER LETTER.
Dear Sir: I have improved some since
writing you before, only occasional cough
and very little discharge from nose. Feel
ing much better. My hearing is much im
proved now; not so much roaring in my
head since Duffy’s has brought my blood
to a healthier condition and motion.
Sincerely yours, W. SCOTT.

PRESIDENT RESPONDS
States Defense As to His Ap
pointments in South.
PAINED AT SOUTHERN OUTCRY.
Writes a Frank Letter to Clark How
ell, of Atlanta—Declares He will Nol
Swerve from Course Marked Out
He is Not Angry.
Washington, March 2.—The full text
of President Roosevelt’s leter to
Clark Howell, editor of the Atlanta
Constitution, regarding southern ap
pointments, an abstract of which was
published this morning, was made pub
lie yesterday. In beginning his let
ter, which is dated Feb. 24, President
Roosevelt says:
“My Dear M«r. Howell: In view ol
the high opinion of the gentlemen you
mention and if the opportunity occurs
I shall be glad to do anything I can
for him.
“Now, as to what you cay concern
ing federal appointments ir. the south.
Frankly, it seems to me that my ap
pointments speak for themselves, and
that my policy is self-explanatory. Sc
far from feeling that they need the
slightest apology or justification, my
position is that on the strength ol
what I have done I have the right tc
claim the support of all good citizens
who wish not only a high standard of
federal service, hut fair and equitable
dealing to tfc# south as well as to the
north, and a policy of consistent jus
tice and good will toward all men.”
Further along, the president says:
‘‘I have scant sympathy with the
mere doctrinaire, with the man of
mere theory who refuses to face facts;
but do you think that in the long run
it is safe for everybody, if we act on
the motto ‘All men up’ rather than
that of ’Some men down?’
“In your own state of Georgia you
are competent to judge from your own
expedience. In the great bulk of the
cases I have reappointed President
McKinley's appointees. The change?
I have made, such as that in the post
mastership at Athens and in the stir
veyorship a«t Atlanta, were, as 1 think
you will agree, changes for the bet
ter and not for the worse. It hap
pens that in one of these offices I have
appointed a white man to succeed a
colored man. In South Caiolina J
have similarly appointed a white post
master to succeed a eoloredi postmas
ter. Again, in South Carolina. I have
nominated a colored man to fill a va
who is now serving as collector of the
port of Charleston, just as in Georgia
I have reappointed the colored man
who is noV serviing as collector of the
port of Savannah. Pnth are fit men.
Why the appointment of on,- shot:! !
cause any more excitement than ilu
appointment of the other I am wholly
at a loss to imagine.
“If you know of any federal office
holder in Georgia of whom this is not
true, jnay let me know at once I will
welcome testimony from you or any
other reputable citizen which will tend
to show that a given public officer is
unworthy; and most emphatically
short will he the shrift of any one
whose lack of worth is proven.”
Refer: tag to the fact that a large
percentage of the Incumbents of feder
al offices in Georgia are Democrats the
president says:
“But they are supported by mo in
every way as long as they continue
to render good and faithful service to
the public.
“I have <rood reason to believe that
my anpointees in the different states
mentioned -and as the sum of the
parts is the whole, necessarily in the
south at large—represent not merely
an improvement niton those whose
uluces they took, but upon the whole
r higher standard of fede;al service
tlnn ha? -hitherto be; n attained in the
communities in miectjon.”
“1 am rot in the least a-ng r .y, and
s-MIl lesR will this attitude have the
effect of making me swerve one hair’s
breadth to ere side or the oth- r, from
the course T have marked out.”

HIGHWAY ACROSS COUNTRY
The Macnilnm I re<) Roml From Nrjv
Yorli to t'liictifgo.
Th< movement for tbc building of a
macadamized highway from New York
to Chicago is certainly deserving of
success, says the Cleveland Lender.
Anything that is designed to improve
tl “ country mails of tiny part of the
United States ought to be encouraged,
for tlu* greatest obstacle in the way of
the successful development of the ag
ricultural regions of the country today
is the difficulty experienced in travel
ing over the highways in certain sea
sons of the year.
The movement for good roads was
given considerable Impetus several
years ago. when a great army of wheel
riders began to clamor for improve
ments in the highways, and much was
accomplished in various sections of the
country .through the efforts of the
wheelmen’s organization. The craze
for bicycle riding 1ms abated, however, *
and one force in the good roads move
ment has been lost.
The men back of the New York-Chi-

Interested in automobiles, either as
manufacturers or users of horseless
vehicles, and they cannot be said to be
free from an interested motive. That
should make no difference, however.
The contemplated improvement would
be of great benefit to the country, and
if ways and means can be provided
the project should be carried through.
This country ought some day t» have
as good country roads as arc to be
found in France. Germany and other
European countries in which the build
ing of highways has been carried on
scientifically for many years.
RxperimeiitliiK; With Wood Pavement
An experiment is to be tried with
wood pavement in Brooklyn. A sam
ple street or two is to be covered with
pine which has been treated with creo
sote oil and rosin, the process giving
hardness and endurance. The blocks
are set up edgewise—that is. the grain
of the wood runs in the same direction
as in the growing tree—and they are
laid on concrete in the same manner as
asphalt. The advantages claimed over
asphalt tire silence, elasticity, endur
ance. facility of repair and a trifling
gain in cheapness.
