t rnrc i^eci>oicw rOBLISHKD TUKBDAY ANO FRIDAY. BY Ed. H. DkCaMp. The Ledger is not rosponsibie for tb« view ,; of correapor.douts. Oorrespondeuts who do not contri bute regular news letters must fur nish thei.- uau.e, not for publication, but for identification. Write short letters and to the point to insure publication ; also endeavor to get them to the office by Monday and Thursday mornings. Obituaries will be published at five cents a line. . Beading notices will be published at ten cents a line each insertion. All correspondence should be ad dressed to Ed. H. DeCamp. Manager. NOTES ANO COMMENTS. The woman who thinks she is any better than any other respectable wo man, be she rich or poor, is a snob, and there is nothing in this world that is mure detestable than a snob bish woman. To exercise charity toward your enemies is a noble precept, but the temptation to strike out from the shoulder rather than turn the other cheek is often so great that men lose sight of the Biblical injunction. ^ Don’t let them bring that North Carolina distillery to Cherokee county. It is close enough to us now for us to see its damning work. If North Carolina can’t stand it Chero kee must not try, but on the con trary must fight against it as we would a consuming fire. The effect of its work would be more damaging. ♦ ♦♦■•- The refusal of Chief Justice Pope to grant bail to Jim H. Tillman is just what all people who had been in formed about the facts in the case and had knowledge of the law in such cases thought he would do. And we hope Justice Pope’s action in this case is the beginning of an era in South Carolina when law and order will prevail as they did when Justice Pope’s distinguished relative, Justice John Belton O’Neil, held the high of fice that tbe justice now himself adorns. The Charlotte Observer and the Columbia State of Friday were rather of the sensational order. The first was devoted principally to the Bishop trial and the latter to the Tillman application for bail. Both these trials are the result of the depravity of mankind. Had Bishop entertained a proper regard for his character he would not nave permitted himself to go to the Wilson home with whiskey in his pocket and offer it to a young lady ; and had Tillman entertained a proper regard for his character he would not have committed the offenses against *Society that are attribut ed to him and then placed himself in a pos’tion to be exposed. The former allowed his depravity to get him into trouble, while the latter’s depravity combined with an unsatisa- ble ambition proved his downfall. •- ♦ ♦ ♦ The South Csrolina legislature has come to a close—it closed last Satur day. If it has done anything extra ordinary to commend it to the people of tbe State we Lave been unable to detect it. Some very good measures were introduced only to be killed, but as a whole tbe work done was of tbe mildest and most conservative char acter. It looks like folly to be send ing men to Columbia once a year to do nothing. Bi-ennial sessions are the proper thing. It costs a consid erable sum every year to run this legislature, for salaries and mileage alone, to say nothing of other expen ses, in ail probability will run it up to—we do not know tbe exact fig ures, but they are large. The truth of tbe matter is that, at least $50,000 to $100,000 a year might be saved the tax payers of South Carolina if the legislature met only once in two years. It is true that this would meau but about $1,000 to $2,000 for each coun ty a year, but that would mean a slight reduction of taxes. No DUtUIery for Cherokee. We learn that there is an effort being made to establish a distillery in this county. We hope the move ment will receive snob a crashing blow in Its indpiency that it will be abandoned. Bat if it is persisted iog then let tbe manhood and woman hood of Cherokee county rise en masse and say that tbe thing shall not be. I,ocal Cotton Market. Cree was sufficiently recovered from the severe case of grippe which held him prisoner the most of last week to attend both services on Sunday. But owing to the serious condition of his throat he preached only at the morning service. His text was Genesis 11:9: “Where art Thou?”—God's call to Adam and Eve in Eden. He first spoke of the desire of conscious guilt to hide itself from the face of God. The soul that knows it is guilty of sin and the Christian that is conscious of unfaith fulness both try to hide their guilt and unfaithfulness, but God sees it all. There is no escape from Hi* all-seeing eye. He next asked all Christians to open their hearts and lives fairly and squarely to the ques tion, “ W’here art Thou?” Men can’t read your hearts. They know nothing o f your intentions, however good they may be. But they can and do read jour actions, your words, your lives, and tht y both judge you and are in fluenced by you accordingly. In closing he made an appral to Chris tians to take an out-and-out stand for Christ and the right in all things. We can only do so by submitting everything to the test, “Is this for or against Christ?” and wnen in any doubt, the only safe rule is to avoid all appearance of evil. A very pleasant and much appre* ci; t ‘J feature of the morning service was the beautiful solo sung by Mrs. Wade R. Brown. She sang to the de light of all who heard her, that won- drouslv stirring song, “Fear ye not, Olsrael!” At night, owing to the sP^iou‘ , con dition of the pastor’s throat, there was no sermon; but the following programme, interspersed with hymns, scripture reading and prayer, was presented and thoroughly enjoyed by all lovers of good music. Warren’s “Magdalene,” sung by the quartette, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Cree, Mr. Osborne and Mr. Richardson, was very much enjoyed; and the duet by Mrs. Brown and .• rs. Byars, together with Mrs. Brown’s soio, “O rest in the Lord,” deserves special mention. But it was all good. PROGRAMME Solo—“The Lord is my Shepherd.” Van de Water Miss Eva Ross.
