Monday afternoon the Pickens ikrain was delayed several hours about .o half-mile north of Easley on ac- •oouot of the sudden collapse of a ■freight car journal. When the jour nal gave way the car swerved, tearing .up a rail and causing other slight •damage. The train was of the accom- imodation class, carrying a number of passengers, but fortunately no one •was hurt. Hews reached Spartanburg Monday afternoon of the sudaen death o' Maddison Rollis*. a citizen of Bolting k Springs Mr. Kollins had gone to the barn to shuck corn when be was seised with a violent attack of apo plexy from whiebibe died in a few minutes. The deceased was 67 years old and leaves a faa:ily. He was in apparently good health up to the time of his death. A landmark in Edgefield, the Bryan place, was burned to the ground. Monday. The place belonged to Capt. G. Evans, who was haring it changed into a modern mansion, as his private residence. Only carpenters were Ju the house when the fire broke out under the roof. Capt. Evans’ loss, covered by insurance, is some fifteen hundred or (two thousand dollars. Constable Bedeabaugh, of Pros perity, got on the train Sunday with a .negro handcuffed to take him to jail in Newberry. Aa soon as the train got started aod as the conduc tor entered the door the negro made a break and jumped from the train making his escape. The jump was a dangerous oie, but the negro was not hurt as be was seen a few miles below Prosperity since with bis handcuffs on. Terrell, the editor and business man ager, will devote his whole time to the publication of the Johnson Moni tor. The discontinuance of the Sen tinel leaves Saluda with only one paper, the Standard, edited by Mr. A. B. Cargile. Mrs Wash Eades. a respected lady living at tbe Anderson cotton mills, attempted suicide Saturday by taking laudanum. She took a very large dose of the poison, which produced nausea aod vomiting ensued. To this is due tbe fact that her attempt proved un successful. It is said that* Mrs. Eades has not been living happily uritb her husband for some time, and (that this was tbe cause of her at tempt to take her life. I Charles Briggs, colored, an em ployee of tbe 0. & W. 0. railroad, hvas arrested in Greenwood Sunday bight for breaking Into a car ab tbe A W. The theft was llscovered just after the train left Spartanburg aod a telegram was sent io tbe Greenwood officers, who arrest- id the negro when tbe train arrived it that place. The value of tbe irhlskey stolen was $96. Tom Jefferson.a negro, who assault- id a crippled white boy in Aiken >d Saturday night, was whipped Son- lay olgbt by a crowd of white people n Granlteville. The negro was arrest ed at Aiken on Saturday afternoon, but wm released upon his promise to leave the town. Upon learning that the negro would board a train at Granlteville white citizens of that place met tbe negro and gave him over fifty lashes, accompanied by the order to leave tbe community at once. The death fif Chief Justice Mclver leaves living TOday only six of the 169 members of tbe momentous secession convention, which was followed by the war between the north and the south. In May 1901, at tbe time of the Confederate reunion, there were ten survivors of this famous body. Since that time the Rev. VV. H. Camp bell. Capt. John H Kinsler and Chancellor VV. D. Johnson have passed away. Now comes the death of Judge Mclver, leaving only six survivors. They are, L. W. Spratt, of Jacksonville. Hon. Peter Stokes Col. Joseph Daniel Pope, Dr. James H. Carlisle, Col. R. A. Thompson and R. C. Logan. News reached Columbia Sunday of the drowning of a negro In the Con- garee just heloe- the Southern rail way bridge not far from Fort Motte. The negro was tbe assistant to the bridgekeeper and had started across the river in a small boat carrying good sized hog. The hog was io one end of the boat and he in the other Whe the boat got about midstream where the water was swift he was seen to go to the other end of tbe boat An instant later the boat ‘ kicked up” and turned over spilling man and hog into tbe stream. The negro held to tbe boat a few moments, and then released it and began to swia. He had gone only a short dlstaofce when he sank. I Special to The Ledger. | Coicmwa, Jan. 15.—About two o’clock this afternoon Lieutenant Governor Tillman met Mr. N. G. Gon zales on Main street just at the elec trie railway transfer office and quick ly pulling a pistol fired, shooting Mr. Gonzales through the body. Mr. Tillman is reported to have said, ‘ received your message,” as he shot. Nothing can be learned as to any message. Mr. Gonzales’ condition is critical. The surgeons have operatec upon him and say his chances of re covering are about twenty in one hundred. There was absolutely no preptionition of the tragedy. G Gonzales, editor of The State and one of the most prominent men in this city, was shot and mortally woundec about 2 o’clock this afternoon by James H. Tillman, Lieutenant Gover nor of 8outh Carolina. The tragedy occurred at the corner of Main and Gervais streets, directly in front of the Opera House. 'Tillman who had been presiding pver the Sen ate, left the capitol when that body adjourned aod walked up street. Gonzales had left Tbe State office at about the same time, on his way to dinuer. No New Development* in Cashion Case Ap pointment* of Magistrate DIhcuhh«h1 (Correspondence of The Ledger.j Blacksburg, Jan. 13.—There are oo new developments in the Earnest Cashion case. Efforts are still being made to arrest him. By some, it was thought that he would go to Mon terey, Mexico, to work with a man by the name of Jenkios who was at one time in the railroad shops at this place. Up to this time, however, nothing has been heard of his where abouts. It is stated that bes.des having gotten mouey on bogus checks here, he obtained some money at Gaffney upon certain land papers that are said to be at least suspicious. As the meeting of the legislature is on the agitation io regard to tbe appointment of a magistrate at this place, has been revived. The public is familiar with ail the facts relative to same from letters by your corres pondent which have appeared in The Ledger from time to time since tbe election. In regard to the matter it is hardly necessary to say more than that there is a good deal of reckless talking being done by supposed friends of the legislative delegation from this county as to who will “con trol” said delegation. Those elected to represent the people of the county are men of character, and it will not be believed until there is stronger evidence, that there ds or will be “dictator” who will control ap pointments, though desired perhaps by some would-like-to-be-known-as Mark Hannas. A 'borough examination has been made, bat it is said at the hospital that Gon zales cannot possibly recover. Tillman was immediately arrested and taken first to the station house,- then to the jail and finally removed to the penitentiary, located at this place. Tbe latter step was considered necessary to insure the safety of the prisoner. The tragedy of today is the result of a long-standing political feud be tween tbe two men, that had its origin in the advent of James H Till man io polities in South Carolina. During the last campaign, in which Tillman was a candidate for governor of South Carolina, Gonzales, through bis paper, Tbe State, bitterly at tacked Tillman’s record both as a politician and a citizen. In one edi torial which was notable for its forci ble language, Gonzales accused Till man of embezzling funds that were collected for the building of a mono- m nt in Edgefield. These and simi lar attacks, made by Mr. Gonzales, through his paper, according to Till man’s own statement, defeated him for the office of governor. A X^Uuowud Dollar* Worth of A. H. Tate, Esq., of Webster, died at her borne on Wednesday morning tbe 14tb inst., after a long illness. She was a daughter of the late Dr. Ham let Goudelock, was a woman of strong character and amiable disposition, and was loved by all who knew her. She wae nearly sixty-seven years old and leaves her husband and toflr children, Dr. Henry Tate, Dr. Oliver Tate. Mr. 'Hamlet Tate and Mrs. Joseph Carter, to mourn their loss. She was a consistent member of tbe AsbotysMethodlst church aod died calmly, trusting-In her faith in Him who.saves. Bachelor, former Attorn ey General of North Carolina, and one of the ablest lawyers in this State, died in Raleigh Tuesday, aged 77. The Odd Fellows, of vVilmington, numbering between seven and eight hundred, have a movement on foot for the erection of a handsome I. O? O. F. building to cost about $50,000. Young Richard Ariex, who was re cently shot in both legs at New Lon don, in Stanly county, and after having his left leg amputated just be low the knee, is improving and the chances are now that he may recover. At tbe close of New Hanover Super ior Court in Wilmington the grand jury returned twenty-three bills of indirtment against operators of slot machines in Wilmington. By order of Judge Peebles capia- was issued for each defendant and each was re quired to give a bond of $200 for his appearance at the March term of court. Mr. Avery Dobb. a young man from Vienna township, Forsyth county lost his mind a few weeks ago He became unmauagabie and two of the neighbors, Messrs. Hauser and Spess, carried him to jaii io Winston, where he will remain until arrangements can be made to send him to the hos pital at Morgantown. Application has been made to Superintendent Murphy. Kistler Bros. & Hafner, of Lincoln ton, owners of the Delraa Cotton Mills, located at that place, sold the entire plant Tuesday to R. S. Rein bardt, R. E Costner and A. J. Bag ley, all of Lincolntoo, who will begin operating the plant at once. Thia plant has not been in operation for some time The mill spins coarse yarns exclusively. The price has not been made public. Owing to the failure of Judge W. B. Council to reach Hertford until Mon day night, the special term of court for the trial for the second time of James E Wilcox, for tbe alleged mur der of Nellie Cropsey, at Elizabeth City, did not begin Monday as sched uled. Court opened Tuesday and tbe trial proper began Thursday. A large crowd is present to attend the trial, but no violence is feared. In attempting to save her doll from the flames Tuesday little May Sher rill, the 3 year-old daughter of N. W. Sht rrill, of Charlotte, received burns that resulted in her death. The child was sitting in front of an open fire place when a live coal popped out and ignited the doll’s dress. The child tried to subdue the flames but before she succeeded her own little dress caught. When the parents reached their child the little one was still clinging to her doll and her clothing was in a light blaze. Robbers were on tbe move in States ville Monday night and visited several residences. They effected an entrance into the residence of Mr. Tom Kerr, who lives on Bell street, by raisiog the window sash of the kitchen and relieved Mr. Kerr of all the flour, meat and batter in tbe bouse. They also attempted to enter the residence occupied by Mr. Hunter Moore, on Center street, but failed to accom plish their object there. There were evidences of their having'beeu on one or two other back porches. Fire Tuesday evening in tbe build ing occupied by the hardware firm of Brown, Northup Co., in Asheville did considerable damage. Tht blaze was confined to the second an# third ■tories of tbe building bat tbe damage to tbe stock of hardware by water will be large. While the fire was in pro gress the book and ladder horses, hitched to aTarge truck, ran away. They ran for a mile before the truck turned over. In the course of this mad race down Fatten avenue they plunged into a street car smsehiog the front step wrecking two country wagons and Injuring a horse so badly that be bad to be shot. Fire broke ont Monday night in the centre cf the business section of Newbern, in the photograph gallery of E. Gerrecks, on the upper floor at the corner of Pollock and Middle streets. Tbe fire immediately spread to the Virginia Life Insurance Com pany, general fire insurance offices, Bartling’s barber shop, Baxter’s jewel ry store and C. D Bradham’s drug store. The latter place was consider ed one of the handsomest in tbe State and tbe damage alone to the drug store and fixtures will reach $25,000. The damage incurred by tbe others will reach in the neighborhood of $10,- 000, making a total loss of $35,000. Tbe night was cold and all the fire engines in the city were called into service. A preposessing young man applied at Mr. J. H. McGinn’s in Charlotte Monday night for lodging. He was given a bed and he also went down to breakfast. He oettled with Mr. Mc Ginn for bis lodging and meal and de parted. Soon after the man left the house, Mrs. F. H. Ayers, one of the boarders, returned to her room from the breakfast table and ascertained that during her absence some one had been in her room. She went to ber trunk where she had Some money and other valuables to see if these bad been disturbed. To her regret she found that $61 of her money was mis sing and a small gold watch with a lady’s chain attached. She notified the occupants of the house of her ,loss and later the police were made acquainted with tbe robbery. Up to Monday the young man bad not been caught. The Mecret of Look Life.
