& nrnpc r^E:i30H5i«. PUBLISHED TUESDAY AND FRIDAY. RY Ed. H. DkOamp. THE LATEST FROM GAFFNEY. The Charlotte Obeerver justly calls attention to the varied fame of one of South Carolina’s most progressive little Piedmont cities. The Observer says: ****** Witholding approval of the spirit of levity with which The Observer treats this “latest sensation” in Gaff ney, we most say that the tribute to Gaffney’s versatility is well deserved. When it comes to springing the unu sual Gaffney is a second New York. Considering its size, the capital of Cherokee county plays for front page space, scare heads and editorial com ment almost as often as Atlanta, and always moae effectively than the gay Gate City. The Gaffney date line means a ‘good story.’ “As Gaffney never does things by halves we suppose Dr. Broughton’s proposition will be carried out.^ and the theatre transformed into a Y. M. C. A. Then, logically, ‘Grit and Steel,’ a Gaffney publication devoted to the interests of the game cock, will be changed into the Y. M. C. A. organ. “And eventually Gaffney will have mother and more pretentious thea ti e.” The above is from The Colum bia State and shows that Editor Gon zales also has coursing through his mental make-up a vein of humor. We feel it our duty, however, to inform the genial State that there is little probability of Grit and Steel being turned into a Y. M. C. A. organ. As a promoter of the interests of the game cock it circulates in every state in the United States, every province io Canada, every s tate in Mexico, also into Central and South America, Cuba, Philippine Islands, England, Erance, Wales and Asia, and if it were turned into a Y. M. C. A. organ those who have paid for game cock literature might rebel, unless we could bring them under the spell of the famous evange list. Its patrons, therefore, may rest content and listen each month for its clarion crow : NOTES AND COMMENTS. New Mexico has had an organize! teritorial government for fifty-two years, but it has never been radical enough for the lawless Republican party to let it come into the Union as a Stale. “Man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourne,” while the unjust fiings of the thoughtless leave many a wounded and bleeding heart. It is better not to say any- thiny ai all concerning our neighbors if we cannot say something good. The most detestable thing on eartb is a long-tongue woman who is forever trying to bring some poor unfortunate one under the ban of public opinion by her everlasting gab. We wonder If there is anyone in Gaffney whom this would fit? Two weeks from Thursday that mythical old scamp, Santa Claus, will delight the hearts of millions of the Christian world’s children. May he live throughout eternity to cheer the hearts of the little ones annually and never grow old. CURES WHERE ALL ELSE FAILS. i Cough Syrup. Tastos Good.
