Had Been Operating on Great Plains With Strong Force—Surrender Se cures Pacification of the Whole East ern Region, It Is Thought, Washington, Sept. 15.—The state de partment has received a cablegram from Min. Hart at Bagota, Colombia, which says that the revolutionary gen eral, Carreazo, who has been operat ing with a strong force on the Great Plains east of Bagota, has surren dered. This is regarded as of the utmost im portance to the government authori ties, who consider that it assures the pacification of the whole eastern re gion. The Colombian government also has announced the repulse by a govern ment war vessel of a revolutionary at tack some days ago upon the Magda lena, river. ODD FELLOWS IN SESSION Seventy-Eighth Annual Session of Sovereign Grand Lodge. Des Moines, Iowa, Sept. 15.—While special trains arriving from all parts of the country and the attendance hav ing already reached 30,000, the sev enty-eighth annual session of the sov- erein grand lodge of Odd Fellows was formally welcomed to tTus city today fey Goverror Cummings and Mayor Brenton in the new auditorium. Ad dresses were made by M. Newman, o* Des Moines, grand master of Iowa; Miss Idal Van Horne, president of life Iowa Rebekkah’s assembly, and Major Rainey, Iowa department commander of the pat: larehs militant. The re sponse was made by Hon. A. Cable, of Covington. OWo, grand sire. Upon the conclusion of the welcom ing exercises the sovereign grand lodge was formally called to order. The report of the grand sire, which was submitted, indicated that there were 127 grand lodges established, of which six were in foreign countries. The t ital number of subordinate lodges is 12,792, and subordinate encampments 2,780. The entire membership of the order reaches 1,002,272. During the year there were 99,392 Initiations in the subordinate lodges and including those initiated in other branches tfie total reached 185,845. The amount of relief disbursed was $.1,393,785, an increase of $203,093. ENGINE BOILER BURSTS. Men Hurled Through Air—One Instant ly Killed. New York, Sept. 15.—George Lutz engineer; James G. Dooley, fireman, and Walter Weber, conductor, were blown out of the cab of a locomotive which exploded on the Pennsylvania railroad just west of Jersey City. Lutz was killed and the others were seri ously scalded and bruised. No cause ior the explosion has been discovered The boiler had been filled, there was plenty of water in the tender and the locomotive had been working smooth- iy- The engine was one of the largest on the road and of mogul type. It was drawing a heavy freight train into Jersey City. The wreck of the boil er indicates that the crown sheet blew out and the force of the explosion lift ed the boiler upward Bind forward off the plates on the trucks and with the cab the boiler flew into the air about 150 feet from the spot where the ex plosion occurred and when in the air the cab split in two, dropping in parts to the tracks, with Lutz in one part and Dooley and Weber in the other, 'lue boiler flew onward and upward 100 feet more and then struck the s rte of a cut, bounced off the rock and flew downward, but still forward, to tae tracks, landing about 75 feet be yond. Found Guilty of Murder. Birmingham, Ala., Sept. 15.—Hor ace Jackson, a negro, charged with participating in the lynching of Aleck Herman, another negro, in Lawrence county, has been found guilty of mur der in the second degree and sentenced to the penitentiary for ten years. The negro Herman had murdered a wom an who had refused to marry Mm, and when captured confessed his crime. A large crowd of negroes surrounded the constable, who was carrying him to jail, and, securing possession of the negro, hanged him.
