Toeiitlay'B Ilattle wan Strong and Vigorous and Both Candidates and Supporters Worked Hard—The Crowd was Orderly and Goodnatured. The story of the battle of the bal lots can better be told in aritfitnetioal figures than in figures of speech. Last Tuesday’s battle was a vigorous one and many telling licks were put in by the numerous candidates and their more numerous friends. The day passed off quietly so far as Cbero* kee is concerned and not even a fisticuff occurred to mar the occa sion. Voting bej'Hn early and con tinned tc file close with unabated interest. Shortly after the close of the polls the crowd began to gather in front of The Ledger office to watch the returns. Tne first box sent in was Stevy and from then on to the small hours of Wednesday naorning the air reverberated with the shouts of For Congress the populace as the figures went up announcing the resnlts. By 12 o’clock ^Tuesday night the result was pretty well known so far as the county candidates were con- t roed, but it was not until yesterday that the full figures for the State candidates could be obtained. The County Executive Committee met yesterday and made a complete count of the returns from the twenty-four precincts in the town and county of votes cast for all State, : county, senatorial and congressional candidates. The Gift a Mystery Which No Man Understands. FLAW PICKER ON WOMAN “Flaw” U a Great Admirer of the -‘Female Woman,” but Can’t Get Around the Fact That She Is a Mystery which Cannot be Unraveled—Hla Experience. Coalin' Ground, Aug. 28.—-In- durio' my time I have met up with varioUljm’ aandry myateries; I have aeeo what some folks call ghosts an’ have found out what they were before I etopped; smart men have explained to me what causes thunder an' llgbt- nln\ an’ earthquake*, an’ explosloo- menta of volcanoes; smart men have gone down into ths bowels of the earth, as It were, an’ discovered the mysteries of nature therein; they have gone out to the forequarter* of tha earth an' unraveled the myatertea of nature there, God has banded down to m»u tbi lightnin’ from the clouds an’ is has mads slsetrlelty out of it to take the plaee of steam an’ keroeene oil; of all tha gifts Which, you understand, hav* been handed down by an all-providin’ Jehovah have been unraveled an’ un- derstood by wise men but one, an’ that one gift Is the greatest gift that 1 God has ever handed down to man—- ' Woman. How strange! that God would give to man a liftetime partner, an’ help- mote as It were, thst he can’t under 'stand—a mastery that the smartest men In all Ine world have failed to unravel. The Parson took “Home” for bis text one Sunday an’ indurin’ his con- flab he said: “My beloved brethren an’ sistreo, I could preach this same sarmnnt to you for ten years an’ dig up .new ideas every time 1 would open month; yea, I could write ! that woman was somethiug more than i a mere human bein’ like us men I folks! I was a yearlin’ strip of a lad goiu’to school in the country to a log cabin with the bobbin’ all punched out of the cracks. The woodeo benches were arranged around the wall so as to turn your feet on either side, an’ some ofjthe gals.had a fashion of turnin' their faces to the wall an' slickin’ their toes in the wall for props. Now, it came to pass that there was one gal in that push that would slight me, say all manner of bad things about me, make fuu of me, an’ I raley did think that ebe bated me most of all human betas’ on earth. She was the prettiest gal in the whole push, butjl, like any male boy, hated her because of the way she was wont to threw off On me, so to speak. One day -I saw #h*4 I thought to be a good ebanoe to get even with her an' I put the scheme Into effect. Afterwards I found out that all of ’em was mysterions in some way or other.
