It is the business of this pa per to carry messages of one kind and another into homes. The message will be delivered, too, under favorable conditions, for few persons take up their local paper except in a pleasant and receptive frame of mind. Chief Camp Retires and Chief Lockhart Take* Charge. Chief of Police Tbos. H. Lockhart took the oeth of office yesterday and is now in the regular discharge of hie duties. Tom is a good man and offi cer and his many friends are glad lo have him back in Gaffney. The following is the address of the retiring chief, B F. {Camp, who has served faithfully and efficiently for the past twelve years. Upon retiring from the office of chief of police of the town of Gaffney, I wish to say that I entertain no feel ing of hostility toward any individ ual either in the town or the coun try. In laying down the badge of office I do so with a consciousness of having done my duty both to the town and country. When I came to Gaffney in the early spring of 1890 to take charge of the police of the town, the town and country were arrayed against each other, so much so that it was actually dangerous for a police officer to arrest a man from the coun try ; but it is not the case now. I be lieve that if it were necessary that I could get as much help from the country people as I could from the people of the town I have tried to do my duty fairly and impartially both to town and country, and I sincerely hope that the old feeling of town against coun try is a thing of the past, as they are both dependent upon each other for their material advancement. Now in retiring from the office of chief of police I do not propose to forsake the place of my adoption, and shall al ways stand ready to lend a helping hand to anything that will promote the interest and advancement of the town or surrounding country, and as I have served the people faithfully in the past, I stand ready to serve the people ol the county in another capac ity faithfully and well if such is the wish of the majority of my fellow citizens. It is the dearest wish of my heart that the people of the whole county will come together and let us make Chen k*e county a “watchword'’ for progress and thrift. Let the people of Gaffney shake hands with our sis ter city across the Broad, and let this stream no longer divide us in any way except geographically. The iron bridge is but another lit k which should bind us closer instead of putting us further asunder. And to my worthy successor in office, Mr. T. H. Lockhart, permit me to say that you have my best wishes for a successful administration. May the people “hold up your hands” as Aaron and Hur held up the hands of Mo-es, even 'till the going down of the sun. Take this badge and wear it with honor to yourself and to the town. Do your duty at all times and in all places Do justice to all, hut always temper justice with mercy Be humane, for man’s inhumanity to man has caused countless thousands to mourn. Do your duty so that when you lay this badge down the people of Gaffney can say well done good and faithful servant, thou hast done well. B F. Camp, Ex-Ohitf. The Colored Celebration. The colored celebration held at Limestone on the 18th inst. was pro nounced a grand success; there being between 500 and 1,000 people on the ground. Notwithsanding the fact that the dispensary and beer saloon were open that day, still everything passed off quietly and everybody was greatly elated over the occasion. Blacksburg and Gaffney crossed bats and had an excitable time—resulting in 14 to 8 in favor of Gaffney. The wheel race was carried out all right and attracted not a little attention. Several white gentlemen from town were down and pronounced it the grandest celebration the colored peo ple of Gaffney have ever had. Jas. Miller, better known as “Merch” Miller, was chief promoter and deserves credit for the manner in which ne handled the crowd. A Ciiiitalou|>e * east. Yesterday afternoon a Ledger rep resentative had the pleasure of in dulging in a cantaloupe feast at the , National Bank The cantalounes were cultivated by tenant Maynard Smith on the plantation of D. C. Ross. Messrs. F. G. Stacy and Char ley Hames were also participants. But the meanest thing of all was Ross' getting closer to the crack than the invited guest and then marching him out to Mr. C. C. Harris’ wheel. None but the initiated will under stand this lingo, therefore to make it plainer we will say its a pretty mean trick to invite a fellow to eat canta loupe and then stick him for the stogies. A UHmtliiK Society. Last Saturday evening the Wade Hampton debating society met in the basement of the Cherokee Avenue church. The subject for the eve ning was. Be it resolved that men shall be educated rather than women. The speakers for the affirmative were Messrs. W W. Crocker, Chas. Davis and Joe Robertson. Those for the negative were Messrs. Dear Sir :—You are real mean cut ting me out of my paper just at a time I was anxious to see an account of the grand “Fourth.” J had over looked the fact that my time was up. I enclose money order for -fl 00 as a renewal. How can you expect me to do without “a letter from home twice a week.” I am mailing you under separate cover a few small souvenirs. These, in value, I presume are worthless to yourself, but so many of my friends, young folks especially, have never had an opportunity to see a genuine English nai>. One specimen you wili notice, while it was machine made, was afterwards headed by hand, while the other gives a specimen of the fir»t headed nail ever made b> machinery. I presume you are aware the White House is now in course of repairs. These nails I gathered myself from the rubbish pile and can vouch for their being used in the original con struction of this building. Some parts of the removed woodwoik plainly showed effects of the fire during the war of 1812, at which time the Brit ish attempted burning th.s building. I made an effort to secure a piece of this charred wood, but was unsuc cessful. Kindly furnish me with copy of your paper of yesterday—8th. With best wishes to yourself and Ledger, I am, Very respect foPy, Larky D. Snead. 214 Quincv St.,N. E., Washington, D. 0., July 9, 1902. Delightful at Home Given at Asbury.
