SOME 1)0 VTS. Don’t make it a habit to borrow your neighbor’s paper. The paper is too cheap to do that. Don’t make it a habit to lend your paper. You might want it some- ‘•irne when it’s away from home. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Don’t ask us to credit you. W T e don’t want to hurt your feelings by refusing. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Don’t be a clam, but take your county paper like a good, industrious citizen and keep posted on the hap penings of your section. RAISE YOU It SUPPLIES. Feeling a deep solicitude for the welfare of every interest in Cherokee county, we would not willingly see any one of them lag, if in our power to prevent it. And knowing that the auccess of every calling and work in tbe county depends on the successfu 1 results of the farmers’ efforts we deem it not presumption or out of place to remind our farmer friends that if they will look around among their neighbors, they will find that the most prosperous and independent of their brother farmers are the corn and meat raisers. They have an independence and ease that (falls to the lot of every tiller of the soil who directs his efforts with prudence and energy. This is the time of the year when crops are pitched, and we do hope that when tbe harvest time comes in the fall, that they will lmv« been so arranged that the granaries in Cher okee county will be full to over flow ing, and that her people will have in their own hog pens an abundance of fat bogs to make them meat for another year. Cherokee farmt-rs can brine about these conditions, so much wished for. « They have both the industry and energy and have only to get on the right road and success will follow as the night does the day. MOTES AML) COMMENTS. The Tar Heels are very much in evidence at Charleston this week. It is North Carolina week. The siver- tongued Ayoock with a gallant ret inue has been there and altogether it has been the best week of the ex position. We are glad to have our neighbors call on us once and a while and sincerely trust that all have en joyed tnemseives immensely. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Cherok^e county needs and must have good roads. Tnat man who is not interested in the subject is ob livious to his own best inter-st. Good roads will increase the value of farm land, save time in travel, he an economy in the wear and tear of ve hicles sod harness, and prolong the lives of horses and mule-, and be a pleasure to ride on. Whatever you do don’t fail to agitate good roads •nd when the time comes don’t fail to support them. The Ledger is no political organ. In fact it need not be one. It could not serve the people it subserves faithfully if it were, because it would be subjHcr to the dictation of party bosses. We are and have always been democratic, and though the heavens were to fall we would still be democratic, but we want to be free from bossism and never intend to run this paper in the interest of any one mao or set of men in order trial they may be persnraily hen-fitted there by. In this section wh*-re there is but one party, so to speak, we be lieve that any man who subscribes to the party run-a and regulations, should be permitted to ntf-r himself for office without hindrance and let the people choose their servants wit h- out dictation imm any source. We are loterested in the material, social and educational advancement of the people to a far greater extent than in politics. What we want to nee is a community aiive to its own best in terest in that everybody can tuako an honest living by their labor and lay aside a penny for a rainy day. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ The occasion of President Roose velt’s attendance on the Charleston Exposition this week was a memora ble one for the Ivory City. The speech of the president was alto gether fitting and appropriate. He talked hke a president should talk. He referred to the north and the sputh in such terms as to leave no doubt but that in his mind sectional feeling was dying out and that he de sired it to be obliterated entirely. As a matter of fact those of the south and to the manner born can never forget the trials and disappointments that befell them, but as true Ameri cans we should all forgive though we cannot forget. Charleston gave the president a fitting reception. South Carolina was glad to have the presi dent, and it was but right that he should receive the very warm wel come he did receive. The occasion serves to show the true spirit of the people. Although nine-tenths of the people who greeted Mr. Roosevelt differed with him in politics, yet the reception could not have been more hearty if he had been visiting some hot bed of Republicanism in New England. POWELL POINTERS. A Forty-Yeari) Cripple From Rheumattfun Relieved of Ills SulTerlnic’M. (Correspondence of The Ledger.) Powell, April 5—Farmers have put in good time this week. A lot of corn has been planted near here during the last few days. Mr. W. C. Whelehel has been on the sick list for the last few days, but is now able to plant molasses cane seed to day. Gillie is an up-to date farmer. He has been trying cotton for the last few years, but he says there is nothing sweeter than molasses at home. Mr. James Edwards a cripple by rheumatism who has been in bed for forty years, died March 28th. James hadn’t walked for forty years. Also Miss DodeKeonidy, a sister of Mr. Joseph Kennedy, of Blacksburg, died March ilOth at the home of her parents near Island Ford, N. C. The colored people are preparing to have an old time jubilee at Shady Grove tonight. The pastor of the church has sent out invitations to a large number of whites to attend. We hope they will have a good time and a quiet crowd, as the Rev. is a worthy and deserving old darky. Mr. R A Bridges is spending a few weeks with his sister, at Shelby, who has been very low for several weeks Kobt. says he can make our all O. K. until it comes time to sling the pots around, then he can’t find the nlates and other things at meal time. He forgets where he purs them and lays it tekos him longer to find the things and set rtie table than it takes his wife to cook a meal’s victuals. Mr. Nathan Moore and his daughter Julia are visiting Mr. James R. Moore. Robt. B Powell spent a few days in Forest City last week. While we mentioned something a few weeks ago concerning the negli gence of the new* subscriber at Cow- pens, we did not „ mean to slur him or anything of that kind, we simply mentioned it because it was a face Some parlies in Cowpens rriek * the same complain!s We ouiy meant to remind him as to the necessity and need of the mail. 1 am a warm friend to the new sub scriber and in the past have done him good. Frank llrownin'ti OnlleKt Shot Gun and a Nervy Rabbit. CCorresponUenee of The LedKer.l In the Coalin’ Ground, April lo.— Its about Frank Brownin’ an’ his ole muzzle-loadin' doubble burl shot gun what 1 want to direct your care ful an’ undivided attention to for a few stanzas—well, not to Frank an’ his> ole shot gun so much in perticlar either, but to the proneness of a man to brag on his stuff, whether it’s bet ter than anybody else’s or not, too, you uiaby mougbt notice the nerve or downright fool-hardiness some rab bits has at times. Whilst I was a passin’ down along a string of high paiUn’s my keen an’ all observin’ eye saw something like a chinkypin which turned up later to he the eye of a rabbit. Yes sir, thar he sot ail hunched up aginst the wash board of the pailin’s, nothin’ vizible but one eye an’ a littl-i bit of tiie top of his forehead. I to* k in the situation an’ k lowed hit was im possible to kill him with a rock so I let him set on an’ went after Frank Brownin’ an’ his ole doubble barl to kill the rabbit. ‘ Flaw, are you right down shore hit’s a shore null rabbit? I never knowed a rabbit to set along them there puilins’ before. Becky,” (which, you understand, wae his onliest wife, Mrs. Brownin’; ‘•where’s my doubble barl?” His jaws puffed out as ho blowed in one barl, which was not loaded, an’ when he tried t’otherene he ’lowed, ‘'She’s loaded fer biz, but I’ll take my caps, she meby mought not be exactly primed.” Off we started to that murdersome scene. I showed him, through the crack of the paiiin’s, where ole rab was a sittin’ an’ stepped back. Now, understand, he hadn’t said a word about his ole double barl a bein’ of a good one up to this act of the game. Hs poked the end of his ole double- barl through the crack of the pailin’a to about one an' a half inches of tbe rab’s head and sighted, an’ sighted— raley, I th.-ughl he wanted lo scare up the rabbit to k-ep from tnissin’ of it, but finally at lust he pulled the trigger and shot. If the rabbit had went in the hole which you under stand the shot tore in the ground be could of hid, but he turned Whiteside up an’weDt to kick.n’. Frank didn’t say a word till we got the rabbit in our hands an’ saw tbe top of bis fore head tore off, then it was be said: “Flaw, I’ve seen various and sun dry guos. I’ve owned guns, one barled ones an’ two burled ones, briteh loaders an' muzzle loaders, to say nothin of p< k-stocks, but ther’s only one more gun in this here old wortd hk* this’n, an’ that’s the one this’ll was made from. Honestly. Flaw, I’ve actually knowed this ole gun to turn in tothrowin’ rocks when it would miss firin’. There’s no gir tin’ away from it when it sets its head tc git you.” I raley don’t see how he could miss anything to fudge on it in any such style as that. When you strke a rabbit with such an unlimi ed amount oi nerve, to set right there an’ let a man fudge on it in such a style as that, hit don’t take a gun that will throw rocks or shoot either, fur you could job its head off with the barls. But men is prone to brag on any thing that belongs to ’em (I know it from personal experience) whether they want to sell it or not. I’ve been braggin’on .Mrs. Fn kor ever t-ince that memorious day when that good ole 1'arson of the Gnalin’ Ground tied the knot an’ pronnuoct-d us man an’ wife. Your onliest ole Fl-w Picker A itunawMy.
