Several Stores Broken Open and Stolen. Sometime last Monday night burglars broke out a glass in a win doY in the rear end of Carroll «fe Car penter’s store, and stole a small lot of millinery goods. On the same night they also broke into Smith «& Beaty’s store, colored merchants, and stole quite a quantity of their goods. One of the burglars was a cripple and on crutches. The police force aud Sheriff Thomas and deputies went to work on the case at once and soon found some of the gooos bidden in a brush pile on the tank-branch in the western suburbs of the city. They followed up every clue and recovered more of the goods and Tuesday evening about dark they ran the cripple to cover. Chief Camp. Officer Hollman and Deputy Sheriff Lipscomb arrested him and placed him in jail. He proved to be a negro named Clem Wilkey. It is thought that Wilkey had partners but they have not been located yet On Tuesday night a front window of J. N. Lipscomb & Co’s store was broken and two fine double barreled guns stolen. No clue to the burglars in this case was obtained until late last Wednesday night when it was learned that one of the guns had bt-en sold Wednesday to a negro abour twelve miles below the city on Thick- ety, by a negro who is supposed to be one of the burglars. Taylor, a Thickety farmer and true Ledgerite, spent some time in the city yesterday. John Estes, of Etta Jane, and his daughters, Mrs. Mitcbel, of Hickory Grove, and Miss Estes, of Etta Jane, were shopping in the city yesterday. Clough Inman, a p-ominent Cher okee farmer, spent yesterday in the city. In.luvenlle Society. Miss Irene Wheat entertained quite a number of her little friends at a birthday party a few days ago. The tiie entertainment was quite a ‘‘swell” event in Gallmy’s juvenile society and Miss Irene did the hon ors of the occasion with the dignity, ease and grace of a society lady of more mature years. Appropriate refreshments were served in becoming style by the little hostess, and the hearts of her young guests fairly bubbled over with in nocent merriment as they partook of her hospitality.
