No Bunching. No Clogging. FREEDOM OF SPEECH. One great question before the coun try now is how to suppress anarchy | without suppressing free speech. It i is the boast of our republic that we have a free press—that ail the acts of , government are subject to open criti- ; eism—and that the humblest can | write and speak his thoughts on any subject without thv fear of law or j punishment. Many think it would j be far better to endure all the ills of ! anarchy than to restrict freedom of j speech or hold every man accountable for his words Now a little reflection will reveal the fact that freedom of speech has and must have its limits. When it . degenerates into unbounded license, it must be checked or society suffers an irreparable wrong. Society has the inherent right to protect itself as much against the vile tongue of the slanderer us against the dagger of the assassin, and the government that is too scrupulous or weak to enact and enforce laws for the preservation of its own integrity, will fall into con tempt and deserve to go to pieces. When one man slanders another he is amenable to the law and liable to damages in the courts; when one man threatens the life of another, or acts in such a way as to excite in an other the fear of bodily harm, be can be arrested and required to give bond for his good behavior, or in case of his inability to give bond he can be kept in prison until he can furnish satisfactory evidence of his peaceable intentions. Such cases are not considered in compatible with free speech and re publican institutions How is it then that men must be permitted openly to acivocute doctrines that en danger not only the peace and wel fare. but the stability and very exis tence of the government, which is tte personification and embodied will of the whole people? WALKER. It is said that strong pressure is being brought to bear on Col. Willie Jones, of Columbia, to induce him to run for governor. It is said futher that Col. Jones has been regarded a« the strongest contestant for McLau- rin’s seat, but that the Colonel could not go to the senate without great financial sacrifices which he is un willing to make. We do not know what special qualifications Col. Jones has for either the governorship or the senatorship. He appears to be im mensely popular with a little coterie about Columbia, but “the wool hat boys’’ will have to be consulted be fore he can be elected to either of these high positions, and the name of “the wool hat boys’’ is legion. We think, however, that a man who can not accept a salary of five thousand dollars a year, with numberless per quisites attached, without great financial sacrifice, had better stay out of politics altogether, or else offer his services gratuitously to bis adrnir log countrymen. A few days ago Chief Frauk Camp, of the city police, received a letter from the chief of police of Tryou. N.C., requesting him to be on the lookou* for one Bud Sanders, a white man, who is wanted in Tryon for a murder committee some time ago. The letter contained a description of ihe man and asked that he be arrested if de tected. Sunday morning Chief Camp re ceived information to the effect that Sanders was down at the Limestone cotton mill, where, it seems, be has some acquaintances, and be. with Officer Bert Hallman, immediately went down to get him. Tdey suc ceeded in arresting their man and he ; was placed in jail here, and yesterday | morning the Tryon authorities were no’ified of the capture.
