Mayor Littlejohn had «iuite an ar ray of offenders before him yesterday morning—both male and female and white and colored were there—and as a consequence the city treasury was made richer by several dollars, while those who had to “fork over” were made poorer to the same amount. Two white men headed the docket with the hackneyed charge of “drunk and disorderly” against them. One of them plead guilty and the other one denied the charge. After an in vestigation had been made and the testimony of five witnesses taken, the mayor was satisfied they were both guilty, and, accordingly, lined them 00 each or the usual num ber of days. The money was paid. Three white women were present charged with having been guilty of disorderly conduct. They all de clared themselves not guilty and the case was investigated, live witnesses being examined. There was no di rect proof against the three women and tire case was dismissed—the wo men also. The next case was against a colored woman for disorderly conduct. Af ter the testimony of several witnesses had been h< JiMhe charge was found to be corre^flfhd she was fined i|!2 50 or ten days in the service of the city. This lino was very light; but the wo man was not yet out of tier trouble, or, rather, her trouble had just be gun. A gay young colored sport who had been paying her some attention was ungentlemanly enough to accuse her of stealing a dollar from him, and without the least embarrassment he' had her “pulled” and brought be fore the mayor, and there stated his grievances before the assembled crowd. The plaintiff in the case had evidently gone to the woman’s house with more “tiger” in him than he should have had, and while in that condition the money was taken from him, though he denied being intoxi cated. An important witness was absent in this case, and as the proof was not strong enough to convict, tiie case was coMinucd until this witness could be reuud and brought in. A few days ago two colored men had a difficulty in the upper part of the city. One of them was riding a male at the time, and, as we learned IX he was struck on the head by the one on foot. The one riding the mule drew his “gun”- and began to get out of his saddle. As he did so the weapon was discharged and the bullet entered the mule’s neck , thus probably saving the life of the other negro. That ended the fight, but the fighters were brought before the mayor and one of them paid $10 00 while the other was fined only $2.50. Tho-poor mule, that had nothing to do with the difficulty, was the only sufferer. " ; T- An Explanation. In giving an account in last Fri day’s issue of the installation of offi cers of the Knights of Pythias, we spontaneously indulged in what we thought a little humor at the expense of our good friend, (’ally Hollis, for getting for the time, wo suppose, that we were writing for the public instead of talking to a private circle of triends. As opr little attempt at a joke may be read by those who do not know what a grand fellow Gaily is and how high he stands among the people of Gaffney, we hasten to say chat we meant nothing in the world but a joke and knowing what the Gaffney people thought of the subject of it, we felt.sure that the joke was such a broad one that all would un derstand and enjoy it. The German Club of Gaffney, gave quite an enjoyable dance at the Com mercial Hotel last Friday evening, in honor of the Misses Anspach, of Phil adelphia, who has been" visiting in the city some time, but who has only returned from a pleasure trip to Waynesville, X. C. The German was led in a most gracefnl manner by Mr. Robert Monroe and Miss Lil lian Hopper who introduced some very pretty figures. Our young men deserve much cred it for the prompt and agreeable man ner which they entertain visitors who come to Gaffney.
