IBItate, Conoty and Oity Uepooitory. Death has removed another good man from our midst. Sunday morn- ng about 7 o’clock Mr. D. F. McClure breathed his last at his home near the Gaffney coiton mill after a prolonged illness. About two years ago Mr. McClure lad the misfortune to be bitten by a spider, and after that his health seemed to fail, which was thought by many to be the result of the spider’s >ite. He was a very stout and robust man at the time, but soon began to all away and continued to lose Hesh until at the time of his death he was emaciated so that he bore only a faint semblance to his former self. He moved to this place four or five years ago, with his family, and went to work in the cotton mills of the Gaff ney Manufacturing Company, where le continued to ply his calling up to six or eight months ago. His health then became so bad that ho had to give up his work in the mill and seek rest and recreation. His fate was writ, however; death had marked him for a victim, and he gradually went down until a few days ago when he was compelled to give up and go to bed. There the end soon came, and Sunday morning soon after the sun had come up in splendor and flooded the earth with warmtfrand brightness death's icy touch chilled his heart and it became still forever. The opinion of the attending physi cian is that his death was the work of consumption. The earthly remains of Mr. McClure were laid away in Oakland cemetery yesterday morning at eleven o’clock The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Arch C. Cree, and the pall bearers were the brothers and bioth- ers-in-law of the deceased. Mr. McClure was thirty years of age—just in the noonday of life. On December 24th he married MisaSallie Brown, daughter of Mr. Theodore Brown, of Clifton, and she and one little boy survive him. We tender our deepest sympathy to the young wife and mother in the loss of a fond husband and to the bright little boy who has been de prived of a devoted father so early in life. FOR MEN ONLY. Kev. Mr. Wr»jr lilt* Straight From the Shoulder and Telle Men of Their Sinn. The First Baptist church was com fortably filled Sunday afternoon to hear the Rev. John A. Wray’s ser mon to men only. Mr. Wray began his discourse on the highest plane it has ever been our privilege to listen to for a sermon of that character, and for some time his words and in ferences were of the grandest and most elevating. Along toward the close of his remarks he dealt with sin with ungloved hands and from the manner of his speech it was evident that some one has been telling him something since he arrived in Gaff ney. Gambling, blind tigerism, whiskey drinking, swearing, licen tiousness and evil thinking came in for their share of just condemnation. Be it said to Mr. Wray’s credit that he bandied the subject in as delicate a manner as it is possible to be handled. At the close of the sermon an invitation was extended to all the men in the house, church members as well as sinners, who desired the prayers of the Christian people in their behalf, that they might lead better lives, to come forward, and fully two-thirds of the large congre gation responded to the invitation. It was an impressive scene. Mr. Wray preached to the largest congregation of the meeting Sunday morning, and again Sunday night he preached to a crowded house. Yes terday morning and last night the in terest in the meeting was still intense and the indications are that it will not abate until the end of the meet ing. The better one becomes ac quainted with Mr. Wray the more In teresting he becomes. He will doubt less do a good work In Gaffney. There has been a slight falling off In the enlistments for the regular army since the withdrawal of that portion of the advertisement saying that recruits and new regiments were being enlisted for the Philippines. Potter has gone to house-keeping,occupying Mrs. Sophia Goode’s bon46 on Jefferies street. Mr. Potter has been in Gaffney nearly a month now, and he and his charm ing better-half have made warm friends of all with whom they have come in contact. Mr. T. I. Walker will move this week into his new residence on Bu ford street. Mr. W. M. Webster will occupy the bouse made vacant by Mr. Walker, while Mr. J. C. Ratliff, proprietor of the Battery, will go to keeping bouse in the house made vacant by Mr. Webster. Thus, in all probability, Mr. ’and Mrs. Ratliff will become permanent residents of Gaffney. * Ed. Thomasson moved into his new house on Buford street yester day. Khock of Wheat Coniiumed.hy'Lightning. County Commissioner T. L. Bryant, of near Trough Shoals, was in the city yesterday attending a meeting of the county board. Mr. Byant said that during the storm Sunday after noon lightning struck a shock of wheat in a Held near his bouse aud entirely consumed it. Nothing else on his premises was Injured by the storm.
