Dangerously Wounded by a Nineteen-Year- Old Iloy In Spartanburg. John D. Collins, one of Spartan burg’s most prominent merchants and former proprietor of “The Bat tery” at this place, was shot and seri ously wounded in Spartanburg Fri day afternoon by Clifton Gholston, a boy nineteen years of age. The follow ing facts about the shooting were given by the Spartanburg Journal of Friday afternoon: “John D. Collins, proprietor of the Bee Hive, was shot at 1:40 this after noon by Clifton Gholston, a boy 19 years of age. The wound is a serious one and may prove fatal. “The shooting was done in the Bee Hive, near the front door, and was witnessed by several of the clerks. The weapon was a 32 calibre Smith & Wesson pistol with every chamber charged. One shot was fired. “Mr. Collins was carried to hia home on South Converse street. Dr. L. J. Blake was the first physician to reach him. .No statement seems to have been made by the wounded man. At 2 o’clock Dr. Blake said Mr. Col lins was too weak to make a state ment. “The trouble was over a settlement. Young Gholston has been employed by Mr. Collins for a few weeks in sell ing a stock of goods bought from Gholstou’s father, C. A. Gholston. Gholston went to the Bee Hive and he and Mr. Collins had some hot words. The clerks noticed that each man had his hands on the sbonlders of the other. “Gholston broke away and as he reeled drew a pistol from his pocket and fired. Mr. Collins rushed on him and Harrison Ferguson took the pistol from the boy. Gholston was borne down by Mr. Collins and they grappled on the floor. “Gholston was arrested and carried to the station house. A reporter for The Journal asked him if he bad a statement to make and he said he had none. He was very nervous and seemed to have been considerably hurt. He had scratches and bruises ou the face and neck. He seems to have been bruised on other parts of the body. Ghoiston’s father is here.” Mr. Collins is quite well and favor ably known in GaiTney, both person ally and by reputation, and his friends here were very much shocked and pained when they learned of the sad occurrence. The ball entered Mr. Collins’ body above the stomach and just below the heart, and has not yet been located. For some time it was thought the wound would prove fatal, but some hope is now entertained for his re covery. Mr. Sanders, a salesman for Mr. Collins in Spartanburg and who was an eye witness to the shooting, came over to the city yesterday morn ing. He stated that Mr. Collins was resting well when he left Spartan burg, and that he was perfectly con scious and seemed bright and cheer ful. No attempt has yet been made to locate the ball. Another Carrier I'lgeon. 1’rof. L. B. Davis, who lives a few miles above the city in the Stevy neighborhood, has a carrier pigeon at his place which evidently lost Us way and strayed up in that section. It has a silver ring on its right leg and a gold one on the left. The sil ver ring is marked with letters that look like “H. C.,” though they can not be seen distinctly. The gold band is engraved with figuers. Quite a number of these carrier pigeons have been killed and captured In this section, and though the marks they bear are generally pub lished, we do not remember a single case where anything was learned in regard to the place of their liberation nor their intended destination. Item Deatrojred by Fire. On Thursday, July 4th, a barn belonging to William Young, who lives in the Algood neighborhood, was destroyed by fire. In the barn were forty or fifty buebels of corn and about 185 buebele of wheat, all of which were coneumed by the flames. It is presumed that the Are originated from some hot ashes which were thrown on a pile of atraw beelde or near the barn, by Mra. Young. The loaa wee quite a heavy one for Mr. Young, and hie friends sympa thize with him in bis misfortune. Cotton liloouift, The first cotton blooms we have seen this season were sent to this office Wednesday and yesterday. The first to come in was sent us by J. L. Strain, Esq., of Etta Jane, the next one, on same day, by Frank Mc- Cluney, of Abingdon; the third was brought us by Mr. J. C. Lipscomb and came from Dock Hopper’s, color ed, field two miles above the city; the fourth was sent by Alma Webber, of Dellinger’s, and the fifth came from J. J. Vassey’s place near the old lead mine, two or three miles below the city. They were all red ones and of good size. Pierre Pascele, an Indian, who was arrested and handcuffed in New Mex ico, escaped from bis captor and dis appeared. Next day he sent a mes senger to the sheriff offering to return the handcuffs upon receipt of the key to unlock them. The request was granted and ail hands seem satis fied. Don’t Let Them SnfTer.
