Various ordinances of the city council have been broken at a great rate this week; the city treasury has been replenished to the tune of sev eral plunks and the chaingang is now in a thriving condition on ac count of daily additions being made to it since last week. Whether intoxicating anticipations of the Glorious Fourth” caused this sudden and general outbreak among the dusky sons and daughters of Ham, who inhabit this city, or whether the extremely hot weather of the last few days was conducive to warlike desires aud general cuss edness, it is not within the province of man to know; but certain it is that nearly every morning this week the mayor’s court room presented an appearance which was highly sugges tive of a scene in darkest Africa. The proceedings Tuesday morning began with the trial of Will Mashaw, a rantankerous individual of dark complection, who had loaded up on “mean liquor” and cavqrted around in a manner that would have put to shame a Texas cowboy with a full supply of tanglefoot and a brace of forty-fours. Will’s weapon was per haps of a smaller calibre, but he nev ertheless nourished it and its effect on those who came in his way was the same as though it had been a cannon. Will finally brought up in the jug and Mayor Littlejohn quell ed his belligerent spirits by taxing him twenty-five dollars or thirty days on tbe gang. Will hadn’t seen so much money in many a long day, and did not have in his possession the smallest part of that amount— consequently the gang will be graced by his presence for thirty long days. The next case on Tuesday morn ing’s docket was against a stag party of young bucks who had been indulg ing in a little private disorderly cou- duct—said party consisting of Alec Down, Will Jefferies, Davis Wilkins andjTom Eskridge, and said conduct being a kind of free-for-all fight among themselves, where rocks were the prevailing weapons. ,The case was thoroughly investigated, and though every one was perfectly inno cent, according to his own tale, it was found that one was about as guilty as the others, with tbe excep tion, perhaps, of Alec Downs, as he seemed to be tbe ring leader. He was fined seven-fifty or twenty-five days on the streete, while the others got off with two-fifty or fifteen days. Alec, though, was able in some way to plank down tbe plunks and secure his release, while Will and Davis are now expending their superfluous en ergies in the service of the city. Genie Montgomery had been guilty of tbe very unwomanly conduct of getting drunk, with the usual supple ment of “disorderly” attached. Four witnesses testified as to Genie’s un ladylike behavior, and after an inves tigation of the wbys and wherefores of the case, she was assessed five dol lars, but given tbe privilege of work ing for a term of twenty-five days in case she so prefered. She prefered, however, not to work, and with the usual good luck that always seems to attend certain ones of her race at such times, sbe paid tbe money. Two white men were next brought up Answer to a charge of disorderly conduct against one ard carrying con cealed weapons against tbs other. One was dismissed and tbs other fined twelve-fifty t>r twenty-five days on tbs streets. He could not pay bia fine and had to go to tbe gang. Another caee of dleofderly conduct brought two and a half dollari Into the city treasury. Yesterday morning Farrow Kirby, Colored, who lives at Limestone, was Up for having ”slapped”hl8 wife Tues day night. The so*calied slapping con sisted of a genteel thrashing which brought forth cries and yells that dis turbed the whole neighborhood In court, Farrow’s wife claimed that he only “slapped her once” and that she just “cried a little,” and Farrow told tbe same tale. Two other wit nesses, both colored, testified to about the same thing, and, according to the evidence, the mayor could not fine Farrow more than $2.&0, which was paid—a dollar of it by bis wife. Such occurrences arc common at Limtitona with tbli iiqas coopji, and while the disturbance of Tuesday night was heard a half mile away, there were no witnesses to testify to that fact, and Farrow got off with a light fine. Glenn Tate, colored, was before the mayor for failing to work the streets after being notified by an officer. He was fined five dollars for that and will have to work the streets besides. Tbe last case yesterday was agaiost Malinda Smith, Anna Foster, Teoa Smith and Nora Petty, four dusky belies of the “Cuban” district of the city, for fighting. Tbe fight occurred about one Mendenhall Lip scomb, a young pumpkin-colored sport who seems to be quite a favor ite among the colored females of the city. It seems that one of these maidens was monopolizing Menden hall’s company while another one wanted him and tried to call him away. A fight soon started between these two aspirants for his smiles and favors, and the other two who were mixed up in it joined in afterward?. Mayor Littlejohn impressed upon them very forcibly the error of their ways, and stated that he could not see what there was about Mendenhall that was so attractive as to lead to a fight for the possession of him, unless it was his yellow cohr. He further admonished them that they would lose nothing by behaving themselves in the future, and dismissed them all except Anna Foster, upon whom he imposed a fine of two dollars, which was paid. It did not develop which one finally succeeded in gain ing possession of Mendenhall. He took no part io tbe fight, but looked on with an amused and self-satisfied smile while it was in progress. It is believed in Washington that the next congress will abrogate the Clayton-Bulwer treaty, unless Eng land consents to a substitute satis factory to the United States govern ment.
