NOTES AND COMMENTS. The discovery of oil in Texas marks an ora in the Line Star State. I he quantity is thought to be immense and companies for manipulating it have been formed with an aggregate capital of $50,000.000 We wonder how long before it will in the hands of the Standard Oil trust, and whether we shall hereafter pay more or less for our kerosene. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Now ccckfighting is to be prohibi ted in Porto Rico, one of our out-ly ing colonies, and the law against cruelty to animals is to be rigidly en forced by military authority. Mean while there is no law against cruelty to the highest animal, man, and that will continue to be practiced on a wide scale. But we are civilizing, Christianizing, and benevolently as similating ! ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ . The Southern Baptist Convention recently in session in New Orleans, passed a resolution declaring that it is unscriptural to demand indemnity from China for the persecution of Christian Missionaries and that the denomination which this body repre sents will not accept It. The reso lution excited a good deal of sensa tion and much comment over the country. To our ears it has the true •ring. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ (jaffnej is not big enough to con tain the expanding spirit of her busi ness men. The Carpet Mill people went over to Charlotte and estab lished another plant, and now our Victor Oil Mill Company is going to duplicate its mill and locate the du plicate at Yorkville. It would not greatly surprise us if Charlotte and Yorkville should become suburbs of Gaffney before the final winding up of business affairs. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ China has sent a lengthy answer to the demand of the Powers for a war indemnity of $.’127,000,000. She de clares that she Js not only willing but anxious to discharge every honorable 'obligation, but she pleads poverty and indirectly appeals to the generosity and forbearance of her Masters. She proposes to pay in monthly installments $10,000,000 an nually until the whole demand shall be liquidated, and declares that she can do no more. Poor old China! She is in bard luck. President McKinley’s royal prog ress across the continent has been held up iu San Francisco by the ill ness of Mrs. McKinley. We are sorry for the sick woman, but we take do further stock in the show. In monarchical countries, it is thought necessary for the sovereign and the most brilliant part of bis court to make a journey occasionally in order to impress tho people with the dignity and splendor of royalty, but the people still have a loose hold ou him and they are not quite ready to proclaim him king. They will re serve that honor for his third or fourth successor. PARAGRPHS. 'Know nml P«opl« Vou Don't Know. cott Brown, proprietor of the Cherokee Ion at Blacksburg, was over the first of the week. He accepted the invitation and expacts to fill the engagement. A few days ago the president of a dem ocratic club at Blacksburg invited Tillman to attend the meeting and reply to Senator McLaurin. Tillratn replied and gave this democratic chairman instructions as to the man ner in which he was to be invited. He desired the invitation to come from the executive committee, or from a large number of citizens act ing in a private capacity. That is all wrong. It was a breach of good man ners, even among politiciaus, who are not always burdened with nice little courtesies, for that chairman at Blacksburg to interfere in this matter. The men who invited Mc Laurin are supposed to have charge of the affair and the clubs of the county and the executive committee have no business meddling with it. Senator Tillman should certainly not accept an inv'tation to reply to Mc Laurin, unless the committee that invited McLaurin extended an invita tion to him also. Early CloMing.
