Aetlnir Major linker I’uiilshes Numerous OfTeiidara. rroceedlnRS In the city court hate been proceeding at a pretty lively rate within the last few days, and the police offlccra have been kept quite busy rounding up the sinners. In the absence of Mayor Littlejohn the duties of that official devolved upon Alderman L. Baker who proved him self tqual to the task In every way. Among tbs Hrst cases the acting mayor hud to deal with was one against five white sports who had been gambling In the outskirts of the city. The evidence against them was conclusive; but as there was some doubt about the crime having been committed within the city limits, the offenders were given the benefit of th&t doubt and the case dismissed. Two white men were then brought before the city tribunal for having Im bibed too much of South Carolina’s chemically pure. It was merely a plain, ordinary drunk for both, with no ornamental trimmings of any kind,; and In consideration of this fact their punishment was light— only $2 50 or ten days on the city street force. Both of them paid the money. Albert Smith, a non-commercial tourist, was next called to account for “beating a train” on the South ern railroad. lie was found to be guilty of the charge and requested to pay $5 00 for the offense, regard less of the distance he had traveled, or spend ten days in the service of the city street overseep. He did not have the necessary amount in his clothes, and, consequently, Is doing time with Capt. Thackston’s force. Wilson Lipscomb, a young colored sport who Is a great admirer of the chemically pnre In any and all of its various brands, filled up on his fa vorite beverage Saturday night and, as a result, got himself in the hands of the police, and eventually on the gang. In the city court yesterday morning he was fined $3 75 for his jag, with the alternative of working fifteen days on the streets. He was minus the cash and therefore “ac cepted” the days—though very re luctantly. Saturday afternoon one Jim Leech, being inspired by the invigorating elements of “80 Proof,” proceeded to do up,one Mannie Montgomery in true pugilistic style. There were several witnesses to the performance, and a call from some of them lor the police brought Officer Lockhart to the scene, whereupon a change came over Leech’s warlike demeanor and he be gan a hasty retreat. He was soon captured, however, and locked up. Montgomery was also placed In con- finement, and yesterday morning was fined $0 75 for his part In the affair. He could not pay and went to swell the gang. Leech put up security for his appearance Monday morning; but he failed to appear at court at the proper time, and therefore forfeited his bond of $G 30. Will Mashaw was next on docket with the charge against him of drunkenness and carrying concealed weapons. Proper witnesses failed to appear and Will was released from custody, the case against him being dismissed. A caso of disorderly conduct was also dismissed, as there were no wit nesses present to testify against the accused. The last case to be tried was one against two white men for damage to private property, they having wan tonly pushed a barrel of oil off the platform at the depot. One was called upon to pay $7.50 for bis fun, or go to the gang for twenty-five days, while the other got off with $3 75. They both paid and perhaps will know better hereafter. The extremely mild winter is an indication that the summer will be fraught with sickness unless measures are taken to keep every- th'ng as clean as possible. It would be a good idea to clean op the back yards, whitewash the fence and out buildings and sprinkle lime about damp places. In this manner a lot of sickness may be avoided. Htiike* m Klch Kind. The last big show of the seuson, so far a? we are aware, will he hero next Saturday night, when Barlow it Wil son’s greater New York Minstrels will occupy the boards. In consid eration of the fact that this Is to be the last big show, and that it will in all probability close the show season in Gaffney for several months, the local management have decided to make the prices as low as It was pos sible to got the company to play at, and these are ‘25, 35 and 50 cents. We have every reason to believe that this Is a really good show, and as an evidence of this belief wo submit the following criticisms of the show from reliable papers published in cities where the show has been this season : Barlow it Wilson’s Minstrels from the start to finish were one of the best ever seen in Albany.—The Al bany Argus. Barlow it Wilson’s Minstrels had a packed house, and gave a first-class show.—Hartford Daily Courant. Best of the season.—Portland Ar gus, Barlow it Wilson gave us the best minstrel entertainment of the season. —Troy Times Barlow it Wilson’s Minstrels de serve their patronage. The entire program is of an interesting varied character—Nashville American. The favorable reception given Bar- low <t Wilson’s Minstrels indicate success.—Louisville Courier Journal. Barlow it Wilson’s Minstrels enter tained two audiences at the Opera House. The audience was highly pleased with their efforts.—Rochester Dem. Mr. VVauKli I .a m I it. The two piano recitals given In Limestone College auditorium last Wednesday afternoon and evening, will be remembered as being among the finest musical events that have ever occured In Gaffney. Mr. Waugh Lauder is certainly the finest, pianist and musical’lecturer who ever favored .our music lovers. His lectures and his selections from the works of Beethoven, Mendels sohn, Chopin, Schubert and Liszt were intensely Interesting. He is a delightfully charming and witty speaker, and illustrated his po'nts by musical interpretations that added to the enjoyment of the music a full understanding of the themes and motives of the composers. Mr. Lauder left on the early train Thursday morning for Greensboro where he gave a recital before the students of The Normal College of N.C., in the evening. The Khoriu ! toy it I Circa*. The Rhoda Royal tent show will he in Gaffney at an early date, some time next week, and will give a regu lar circus performance, minus the managerie. This is said to be one of the cleanest circus performances be fore the American people. As nearly everybody enjoys a good circus, and as there has been no circus in Gaff ney this season, it is safe to say that there will be a crowded tent at both the afternoon and evening perform ances. The llrntlri S<|unre Opera Company. The Herald Square Opera Com pany played to a small but apprecia tive audience Friday evening. The company sustained its reputation for clever work, but it was not so large as when here before, therefore the show was not up to the standard.
