"*r- In the market reports o( almost any of our newspapers you may read, "Country produce scarce ami prices strong.” You may also note that the price of cotton is steadily de clining. These short statements are more eloquent than sermons, and that farmer who is not impressed by them is in a state of blind infatua tion. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ The Boer General Botha rejects the terms of peace offered by the British Government and thereby c eclares that he will tight to a tin sh. The London papers are in gro<t glee over this announcement, as it will now give a fresh impulse to the war and an excuse for exterminating the gal lant Boers. It is too much to ex pect that the proud deliance of the heroic Botha should excite a thrill of generous admiration in the bosoms of his rapacious and tyrannical foes. We say hurrah for the man who prefers not to survive his country's degradation! TRAGEDY IN YORK. A Cotton .Mill I’reMldont Coiiiiiiitx Sulelde iiwtiUHe of riunin'lul Troubles. Mr. John It. Ashe, president of the Yortc Cotton Mills in Yorkville, and one of that city’s most prominent business men and influential citizens, committed suicide on Monday night last by jumping into a well. The cause of this tragic ending to a use ful life was the financial embarrass ment of the mill of which he was president and the largest stockholder. The mill was in debt to the sum of about severity thousand dollars, and failing to make satisfactory arrange ments with northern creditors caused Mr. Ashe to brood over the matter until his mind became unbalanced. His friends observed his very nervous condition several days before the tragedy, but they never dreamed of such a terrible result. Oil the night of the terrible deed Mr. Ashe retired with his family, but soon after arose and left the house dressed only in his night clothes He did not return, and his wife, growing suspicious, went out and called him, but received no response. She then becamejalarmed and aroused some of the neighbors who began to search for the missing man. This was between eleven and twelve o’clock, and about one o’clock the body was found in a well near the house Life was extinct when it was found and the fall evidently kilted him, as he was a very heavy man. This fact made it difficult to remove the body from the well. Mr. Ashe was a native of York county, and had lived in Yorkville all his life, with the exception of six or seven jears, during which he resided at Kershaw. Ho was a promoter of the organization of the York Cotton Mills company, and was the leading spirit of the enterprise from the time it was put in motion until the time of his death. He owned worth of stock in the mill, and during the last four or five years he was virtually the sole manager, and only occasionally consulted the directors of the mill about any change or movement he desired to make. Mr. Ashe was twice married and leaves a wife and nine children to mourn for him—three of the children being by his first wife. He has two sons in the Citadel, in Charleston, who were summoned home by a tele gram. York has certainly lost one of her most valuable citizens in the death of Mr. Ashe, the wife a devoted husband, and the children a kind and loving father. The sympathy of everyone goes out to the bereaved family. This deadly poison may lay dormant in the blood fot years, or until you reach middle life, then the first little sore or ulcer makes its ap- I jearance — or a swollen gland in the >rcust, or some other part of the iKxly, gives the first warning. To cure Cancer thoroughly and perma nently all the poisonous virus must be iliminated from the blood—every vestage jf it driven out. This S. S. S. does, and s the only medicine that can reach deep- seated, obstinate blood troubles like this. When all the poison has been forced out of the system the Cancer heals, and th« disease never returns. Cancer begins often in a small way, as the following letter from Mrs. Shirer shows: A small pimple came on my jaw about an inch below the c. ..-on the left side of my face. It gave Me no pain or inoonven- eince and I .slionUl have forgotten ntxmt it had it not begun to intia me and Itch; it would bleed a little, then seal) over, hut would not heal. This continued for some time, r.hen my jaw began to swell, becoming very painful. The Cancer be gan to eat and spread, until it was as large as a hnlf dollar, when 1 heard of S. S. S. and determin ed to give it a fair trial, r.nd it was lemarkable what ft wonderful effect it hud from the very beginning; the sore began to heal and after taking a few bottles disapt>eared entirely. This was two years ago ; there ate still no signs of the Cancer, and my general heatlb continues good.—Mrs. K. Srikkr, I.a Tlata, Mo.
