White Man Convicted of Ketatllng Sun day Gambler# Arrested. The mayor’s court presented quite a lively appearance yesterday morn ing when the hour came for His Honor to don his official robes and take to task the offenders against the city ordinances. The crowd of spectators was larger than usual and the cases on docket sometl.ing more than the ordinary “drunk and disorderly.” A young white man in the city had been detected disposing of “forty rod” without a license and in viola tion of all laws made and provided against such. Officers Lockhart and Gilmer, who are ever on the alert for offenders against the city ordinances, located the lair of the tiger and cap tured that festive animal. Upon in vestigation by the city court the un lawful dispenser was found -guilty of the charge against him, and a fine of $100 was placed upon him, w”h the alternative of thirty days on ue chain gang. Next on docket was a case against five young white sports who had vio lated both the laws of God and man by gambling on Sunday. The officers of the city have for sometime sus pected that this Sunday gaming was going on in secluded spots around the city; and Sunday Officers Lock hart and Gilmer swooped down on a gang over in the “Stumptown” district and arrested five of the play ers. They were each fined five dol lars for their fun. which they 'paid. The officers are constantly on the lookout for these “skinners,” and others of that ilk who indulge in gaming as a Sunday pastime would better take warning and stop their nefarious conduct before they are caught. Still» Mystery. The appearance of Mr. Wesley Mc- Kown at the place where he was killed by a South Carolina and Georgia Ex tension railroad Gain seems to be a mystery still, and nothing can be learned as to the cause of bis leaving Yorkvilie. The following from the Enquirer may be of interest to Mr. McKown’s friends: “Careful inquiry falls to develop a great deal of information about the whereabouts of Mr. Wesley McKown from the time be left the residence of Captain Crawford, until be ap peared at the cabin of Will Currence. Mr. W. states that at about dark an old gentlemen, answering the descrip tion of Mr. McKown, stepped into the store of Mr. John M. Hope as if he were coming to the stove; but seeming to change bis mind, sud denly went out again. One of the negroes is reported to have said that Mr. McKown had said something about having corae as far as the rail road in a buggy; but nothing more definite has been learned. It now develops that Mr. McKown left Cap tain Crawford’s while supper was being prepared. He bad not eaten his supper. The amount of money found in his pockets after his death was $5 40.” ..- Opening Street#. The celling of the "Dick” Thomp son property is developing some val uable real estate in Gaffney. Already a number of lots have been sold. Among the early purchasers were Mr. Wm. R. Lipscomb and Mr. J. A. Carroll. Both these gentlemen have purchased desirable lots. Mr. Lip scomb will build at once, that is in the spring, but Mr. Carroll will prob ably defer building some time, but it is understood that be intends to erect on his new possession oue of the handsomest residences in Gaffney. As a result of putting this property on the market Petty, Johnson and Pine Streets, and Rutledge and Fair- view avenues have been opened and i extended. H. Whitner, of the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company, of Roan oke, Va., was in the city several days last week in the interest of his com pany. Mr. Whitner wants the job of constructing the new bridge across Broad river and came here for that purpose. His company is an old and reliable one and has built a number of bridges in North Carolina. Mr. Whitner is a South Carolinian. He is a gentleman of pleasing address and we have no hesitancy in saying we believe be will make it interesting for bis competitors when the time of letting the contract arrives.
