C. KOfcte*. Cashier, The Celebrated Harlow Minstrels Will Kn- tertolu the People Tonight. The | ace in minstr Isy has been a swift one, but the famous Harlow white organization has easily kept in the fore front of the procession all the time. This old organization, like “goood wine” seems to improve with each successive tour and year. You can’t lose it in the race for busi ness and honors. It is booked at the opera house tonight. Merry features never before seen in minstrelsy have been introduced since last season and this has made it one of the strongest combinations of its kind traveling. As a man ex pressed it, “It is an easy 10 to 1 win ner anywhere.” Songs, music, op eratic selections, costumes uua other things are ail up to the times. As an extra feature to the Barlow Min strels, they have engaged the great and only Frank E. McNish, the si lence and fun ^comedian. An inter esting preliminary feature of the performance, is the street parade with its complete band, that will be given at noon in front of A. B. Gaines’ furniture store. Up-to-date, progressive minstrelsy has been upheld by Barlow’s Min- s'rels for sixteen years, and the emi nent position which this old organi zation occupies in this branch of the amusement world, has been won and maintained by true artistic merit. With new features and renewed vigor as entertainers, this organization ac companied by two bands and forty men will present a minstrel bill that is up-to-date. The first oart is a picturesque dream. The performers appear in be-spangled and elegant silk and satin costumes and introduce a long list of varieties—songs, dances, “gags,” music, etc., that in them selves form an attraction that nobody should miss. In the second part are introduced various specialties and turns by such clever artists in min strelsy as Coburn and Baldwin, mu sical team; Toledo Bros., in their creapy crocodile and lizzard act; Bonelli Bros., trick jumpers; the only and original Frank E McNisn. who has many imitators but do equals and who has been engaged as a spec ial feature. He will he seen on the end and also in bis specialty of si lence and fun. Harry Boyd, “The Black Turkey,” iu a novel coon act and buck dancing; the Barlow Quar tette in new songs; W’illie Bridge, the boy soprano singer who is known as a prodigy; and Chas. Cartmeli. the Beau Brummell of minstrel life, in his graceful imitations, dances and a mgs. Music is said to charm savage beasts, but when it is operatic, it possesses a double magnetism, and that is what one finds in the musical selections of Barlow’s Minstrels. This music is on a grand operatic scale, for “11 Trovatore” and other similar music is played with perfect harmony and effect worthy of any high class artists. Several such l umbers and various medleys are on the programme of every performance. J. A. Coburn, the general director oi the bands accompanying the show, is a trained musician. He is celebrated as the triple-tongued cornet soloist and is the only one who is entitled to the achievement. Secure your tickets at A. B. Gaines’ furniture ctore this afternoon and avoid the rush at the box office to night, for the indications are that nearly everybody in Gaffney who loves a good show will attend the Minstrels. COL. JNO. L. BLACK. He Is a Citizen Who Lets no Grass Grow Coder His Feet. It will interest the traveling public to know that Col. John L Black has established a ferry on Broad river near the mouth of Cherokee creek, to be known as Cherokee Ferry. This is at the Cherokee lord site in 1886 and is on a direct line from Antioch and Blacksburg to Gaffney, by a good road with no hills. The ferry is now open to the public and those who pat ronize it may depend upon it that Col. Black will see that they are treated courteously. Col. Black is one citizen who does not let the grass grow under bis feet. He laid out the beautiful Cherokee avenue that leads northward from the city. This is one of the prettiest avenues in the city. To him is due the credit of organizing the Cherokee Iron Co., with principal officea at Gaffney,, and he has in project the promotion of another enterprise that will redound to the welfare of Gaff ney. Hereafter the Colonel’s head quarters will be in this city, and The Ledger welcomes him and bis enter prises. Larry Snead Again Promoted. The many friends of Larry Snead will be glad to learn of bis good for tune. He has again been promoted, this being the second promotion since he went to Washington, less than a year ago. This time he l a- been promoted from a $720 position to one that pays $840 a year. Larry is capable and energetic and if the government officials are inclined to promote deserving attachees we may look for Larry to be holding a much bigger job at a very early date Since Larry returned to Washing ton with his bride Mrs. Snead has been quite sick with the measles, but their numerous frinds will rejoice to ,Know that Mrs. Snead is rapidly re gaining her former good health.
