The Central Record published at Lancaster, Ky., has the following to say concerning the Herald Pquare Opera Co., which is to present “La Mascotte” in this city tomorrow night: “By far the best attraction presen ted at the local Opera House since its opening to the public last year, was the appearance of the Herald Square Opera Co.,Friday evening. Said Pasha was the attraction, and the magnificient singing, combined with the rare jollity and the real mirth captured the audience, which time and again encored the many brilliant passages in both the solo and chorus work. “The promise of fine acting, pretty girls and beautiful costumes was ful filled, and on all sides one hears words of praise for the entire company. Many of the solos were exqusitd and the happy blending of the voices in the choruses made grand melody. There was not a dull moment in the performance. Misses Mamie Scott and Etta Stetson, as Serena and Alti, carried off the honors of the evening, for their voices and physical charms were in full accord. Robt. Kane in the dual roles of Hessan Bey and the Rajah was fine. In the duets with Serena his baritone and her rich so prano made sweet melody. Edward Kissam in the title role was good, while Harry Nelson, asTerano, scored a success. The rich fun of the evening came from T. F. Caliahan and Jack Lesli e, as Hadad and Mockey, the latter being a star fun- maker, winning round after round of merited applause. Miss Annie Blesin- ger, as Bellah Sojah, aided in the suc cess of the evening. “Olivette was presented Saturday evening and was as greatly enjoyed as Said Pasha.” Gaffney should show its appreciation of the effort of the local management to secure the best possible attractions for this city by crowding the house to the doors tomorrow night, for this is in every respect ‘one of the best attractions that will be here this sea son. Nearly every reserved seat in the house had been sold for this per formance last night, there yet re maining less than one hundred to be sold, so if you want a seat you had better hurry. It seems that it was ad dressed to Mr. C. H. Robbins, who ruais a store near Trough, and he said it, was sarsaparilla which he had or dered to put on sale. It is not known, just yet, what steps he will take in the matter. An exchange says Mr. Robbins “claims that the state constables are enemies of all mankind and iiave cruelly deprived a suffering world of a healing balm.” Constable Bishop, on the other hand, says *‘he may not know beans, but he does know what whiskey is,” and he is sure that the “sarsaparilla” was nothing else but excellent rye. Several others who “sampled” the disputed stuff agreed with the con stable that it was the genuine article. The bottles were labeled “bitters,” with a label not usually seen on medicines, and were minus any revenue stamps—so the report goes. It is stated further that the state chemist will make a report on the beverage and ascertain whether it is “better for indigestion than for paint ing the town.” A Hawk Capturt-d. A few days ago Mr, R. H. McCraw, who lives a short distance in the country, caught a blue hen hawk in his dwelling house. The hawk, it seems, was chasing a wren, or spar row, and when the bird flew into the house, either accidentally, or pur posely to escape capture, it followed. The doors to the room were imme diately shut, and after some lively chasing and much “scrambling,” the hawk was captured and killed. The Docket Yesterday Morning Whs I.lRbt and Ills Honor Tender-Hearted. The docket in the Mayor’s court was not so heavy yesterday morning as it Imp bgen “many a time before,” and the offenders generally were old ones who have been regular atten danta upon the Monday morning matinees presided ove* by Mayor Littlejohn. George Corry, a colored sport, was first on the list and be was called to answer the charge of disorderly con duct. George couldn’t “prove i alibi,” and he was requested to de posit $G 40 for fcis misdemeanor, or to aid Capt. Tbackgton's gang for the term of twenty days In improving and beautifying the streets of the city. Ho paid the fine. Will Allen, Charlie Reynolds, Babe Lynch, Roland Kennedy and Will Littlejohn, all colored individuals who are well versed In the ways and means of getting a living by their wits and by following the allurements of the fickle goddess n/ fortune, were up for gambling, and Reynolds on the e*tra charge of carrying conceal ed weapons. They were each fined $2.00, or five days on the gang, for this violation of the town ordinances, and Reynolds was required to Day an additional $5 00, or work on the streets twenty days, for carrying his pistol concealed. AH paid, with the exception of Littlejohn, who, on ac count of a disabled hand, was permit ted, through the kindness of Mayor Littlejohn, to go until he was able to work or pay his fine. Clint Robbs Indulged too freely in the “chemically pure,” which exhil- erated his spirits to such an extent that he became disorderly and unable to navigate in the manner usual to natural members of the human race. He was taken in tow by an officer and yesterday morning paid five hard-earned dollars for his fun. John Graham, who is a familiar figure in the mayor’s court-room, yet has such a dislike for the place that he will not visit it unless con ducted there by a biuecoat, was fined a dollar, with the alternative of ex pending his energies upon the streets for ten days, for failing to appear as a witness in a case against another or others. John paid the amount, in hard cash, and doubtless wished he had obeyed the summons. The mayor was in quite a tender-hearted mood during the proceedings and was very lenient with the offenders.
