Am “the day we celebrate” draws nigh the interest in the event in creases, ami it is quite safe to say that the approaching celebration will equal any that has been hold in trafl- ney since the first one. The com- ir.itlee have distributed the adver tising mutter and made .all the nec essary arrangements, except a few minor details and such little things as may come up from time to time between now and the Fourth. The grounds have been cleaned oil, the race track put in good shape, the committees ami judges selected, and everything is simply waiting on the arrival of the Fourth—which will be here one week from tomorrow. The fiorai parade promises to be a drawing curd. .Besides those who have already been published as sigui- litig their intention of taking part in this particular part of the program the following have consented also to join in the parade with decorated ve hicles: Miss Ollie Scott, Messrs. J. J. Darby, T. L. Brown, Joe McArthur and W. O. Johnson. The tournament poles are in posi tion and it is expected that among the contestants for this prize will be found Lucian Hopper, Ei. Byars, SheritI YV. YV. Thomas, Claude Ross, A. B. Gaines, J. K. Sparks and YYL Fletcher Smith. That would prove a formidable aggregation and those who would undertake to wrest from them the honor of crowning the lady would undoubtedly havo to get a move on themselves. The firemen are practicing every night when the weather permits and there will be a lively tussle between the local reel teams as to which will carry olf the honors. Both compan ies are making preparations to appear for the first time in handsome new uniforms. Mr. J. A. YY’illis will read the Declaration of Independence from the speakers stand at the grounds. t^uite a number of privileges for stands have been let out by the com mittee and all the allotted space will prcbably be let out this week. Only a certain amount of space will be sold and after that is gone no more will be sold at any price. The Blacksburg hall team is look ing forward to the celebration with a great deal of expectation and will come over confident of wearing the scalp of the Gallney team dangling from their belts as they go home. In the meantime the Gallney team will take ov a little practice and en deavor to sustain the laurels they have already won from the boys be yond ihe Broad The bicycle parade and races will be no less: interesting thru, they have been herelofoiv Everybody, who ut- E nds the celebration may expect a great day of sport, so let every man woman and child for miles around come and enjoy the day. THE SUMMER SCHOOL. it t i.ui jiiih-x lo I’rovu an Allrai'liuii fur C4i<ook<‘‘.' County I'eiu'livru. The summer school is not lagging at ail. Fifty-six teachers are now enrolled and they are full of interest and attend regularly. One of the main features of the school is the lessons in music, given by Miss Addie McArthur. Last week the teachers studied for several days on YVilliam Cullen Bryant. On yesterday they wrote u short biography of him. They will, in a few days, begin a study of Dope. The gull streams and currents have been the study in geography for sev eral days. Today they will study the cause and origin of volcanoes. Map drawing is one feature of the history lessons under Prof. Martin. He laughingly suggested that the teachers should not take too great pains in drawing the first few maps, as he should have them draw several at different times, and would like to see an improvement as they wont along. Prof. Martin went home on a visit Saturday, but was here Monday on time and ready for his week's work. An luterestRuif J'itvf of Wooil, J Clint Alexander, of this city, re ceived a letter a short time ago from his brother, U 8. Alexander, who is now with the ‘2‘Jth Regiment baud in the Philippine Islands. In the let ter was a small piece of wood—just common wood, with no intrinsic value whatever, but it has a history connected with It which would make it a valuable additiou to the collec tion of some curiosity seeker. YVe are sorry that the letter did not con tain a full account of the circum stances counepted with this wood, but it was simply mentioned as be ing a small part of a cross upon which a Filipino woman was cruci fied. Mr. Alexander says that his health has been very good since he went to the Philippines; and he gives some interesting accounts of the movements of bis regiment. Buttles occur almost every day, he states, and in each and every one some poor soldier closes his eyes forever to all earthly things. VV’e hope Mr. Alexander may escape the fate that has overtaken so many of his comrades, and that he may return in safety to his native Htute I'liat Tiiri>iii>iijj jIduiIukIih. A Itrlef SfccU'li of Thin ThrlvIitK IimIum- try. As not much has ever been said about the lime works at Limestone, we doubt very much if many people in Cherokee county, or even in this city, know what a thriving business it is and upon what an extensive scale the works are now being oper ated. Messrs. Carroll A Company, the lessees of the Limestone Springs Lime YY’orks, now have six kilns of huge dimensions running day and night, which consume about twenty- five cords of wood and turn-out over throe hui dit d barrels of toe hne-t quality of lime every day. Two s “?s of men are required to burn tl<~‘ kilns, each set relieving the other at certain hours during the day and night. From sixty to seventy-five hards sue constantly eirip; ,ycd in and around'he quarries. . - r e giit coopers are busily engaged from the peep of day till the shades of night close in making the barrels in which the lime is placed for shipment. A neat and commodious commissary stands close hy, from which t 1 em ployees are furnished with gro. t-m- of every description, ami with man; of the delicacies found in establish ments of much larger pretensions. The lime quarries at Limestone were first opened up by Rev. Thoma Curtis and son, founders of Lime stone College, about the year 1810, when Gaffney was in its infancy and Limestone scarcely known beyond the boundary lines of Spartanburg county, in which it was then situated Only two kilns, of quaint and ancient structure, were erected at that time, and these were probably used for a number of years; hut as Limestone began to be more widely known and the lime made there to gain a wide spread reputation for its purity and excellent qca'ities, the demand for it became so great that more kilns, on a more modern plan of architecture, were- erected to meet that demand. YY'hen the Curtises left Limestone the works fell into other hands, and since that time they have been leased and operated by a number of different individuals and companies, until a few years ago they came under the control of Messrs. Carroll <fc Com pany; and six handsome perpetual kilns now stand upon the grounds us monuments to the energy, persever ance and success of the present man agers. We are informed that the sixth kiln will be fired at an early date. Mr. Boyd L. Haines is the cour teous and able book-keeper and general manager lor the company, which is a sufficient guarantee that no detail of their interests will suffer from lack of attention ; and Mr. D. R Lavender, the polite and accommoda ting engineer of the dummy, is over seer of the works at Limestone. “Dock” is a bustler—his duties are many and varied, yet he strictly at tends to them all and is always prompt to meet every demand that is made unon his time and his services, and under his careful supervision everything in his line moves on smoothly ana with satisfaction, both to himself and to the company who employs him. But yet there is a black cloud hovering about the pretty picture in her mind Which fills her with terror. The dread of childbirth takes av/ay much of the joy of motherhood. And yet it need not be so. For sometime there fias been upon the market, well-known and recommended by physicians, a liniment called Mothers Friend which makes childbirth asslrnplo and easy as nature intended it. ]t is a strengthening, penetrating liniment, which the skin readily absorbs. It gives tho muscles elasticity and vigor, prevents sore breasts, morning slckr ness and the loss of the girlish figure.
