There is likely to ho the usual amount of muds.inging, the usual performances in political gym nastics. and the usual amount of boasting and eelf-glorilication. All fids will be entertaining to the peo ple who attend the meetings, but will hardly turn many voters, one way or the other. The people are do ing more reading and thinking than they have done heretofore, and they are losing their relish for the dema gogue and the political mountebank. We believe there is a great opportu nity in South Carolina politics for an honest, upright, earnest, thoughtful, patriotic man—a man with no schemes for self-aggrandizement, nothing but charity for the short comings of others, with clear cut opinions and the courage to express and maintain them. The people would be drawn to such a man as if by a common instinct and would give him any position he would uc- cept. We know not whether such a man will be developed in this cam paign, but we predict that the one which shall come the nearest to such a standard will get the endorsement of the people. So far as we have observed, the “blight” on pear and apple trees is unusually bad this season. There nre some varieties of pear which are peculiarly subject to it, while it is claimed by the nurserymen that some are entirely exempt. It is a disease for which us yet no remedy has been found. About the best that can be done is to watch the trees and keep the blighted twigs severely pruned as fast as they appear. They sliould be thrown away from the tree, or better, burned, as the disease is caused by a microscopic insect which moves Irom one part of the tree to another, The enemies of fruit trees are multiply ing in recent years and it does not appear to be so easy to raise fruits as it used to be, even when the frosts arc avoided. The June term of Court of Gen.ml Sessions convened yesterday morning at 10 o.ciock, Judge Bonnett presid in'. This is the -:ecofid time Judge Bi nrctt lias presided over court in Cherokee county. An amusing inc'- dc-uL connected with his first visit to Cherokee was the fact that he got mixed up In the dates and was u week behind time, while bis predecessor, Judge Aldrich, also got mixed ip his dates and came a week ahead of time. Both judges seem to have recovered their presence of mind, however, ar.d have been exactly on time since then. Solicitor Henry and Stenographer MeCraw were both promptly on hand and the preliminary work of opening the court was executed wit h dispatch. The first case to be taken up, after a number of cases had been given to tho grand jury, was that of Jesse Wesson, colored, for tlie killing *of Thomas McBrayer. also colored. Wesson and McBrayer both lived in Blacksburg and worked for the Yir- ginia-Carolinu Co. Wesson went down to the phosphate works one Saturday morning last February logo to work. After arriving at the works be discovered that he hail left u book at the house in which ho kept home records of weights for the company. Ho went back to the house to get the hook. Arriving at tin house he sur prised his wife and McBraver in a loving embrace, the woman sitting in the man’s lap. He went to ins bu reau, took from the drawer u pistol, and shot McBrayer, killing him Ei- stunlly. The defence put up the plea of self-defence, claiming that Wesson shot McBrayer believing that he (Wesson) was in immediate* dan ger ui' ins life*; and that McBrayer Lad made threats against him.
