An account of the celebration at Cowpens last Saturday will be found in our local columns, and it is need less for us to mention any of the de tails. It was unfortunate that there was no prepared oration for the occasion and no prominent speaker from a dis tance present. Of course the first impulse is to censure the committee for ncgligeLce and remissness of duly. We arc not prepared to pronounce the committee entirely blameless, as we know noth ing of the particular difficulties with which it may have had to contend. We only know in a general way that when responsibility is divided among a number of committeemen prompti tude efficiency, and foresight are hardly to be expected. C. II. Spur geon had it right when he said that the most efficient committee in the world is a committee of three with two of the members absent. We know further that it takes money to make almost anything move, and that the Cowpens oommittee is sadly hampered by the lack of that need ful article. Until we are convinced to the contrary, we shall hold that the committee did the best it could under the circumstances. We do not expect, nor should anyone ex pect, that committee to furnish the money necessary to secure brass bands and distinguished speakers for such an occasion as that last Sat urday at Cowpens. In the meantime the spirit of Cow pens is not discouraged. Our peo ple are going to meet on tie battle field every year, speakers or no speakers, committees or no com mittees, and keep alive the memo ries associated with one of the great est events in their country’s history. And they are going to buy and keep in perpetual care the ground on which the battle was fought. If Congress will help them, that ground will be transformed into a beautiful park, if not, it will still be kept sacred with all its inspiring associa tions, as a place where men and wo men may congregate once a year and gather fresh inspirations of patriot ism and valor from the deeds of a glorious p^st. MONUMENT AT l-KCDKUItliSlil HG. The recent magnificent demonstra tion at Fredericksburg, Va., on the occasion of layisig the corner stone of a monument to commemorate the valor of the Union army, will arouse a swelling tide of memories in the bosoms of many Confederate vete rans and start a train of wholesome reflections in minds that can now in dulge in such reflections, unbiased by either praise or blame. i’rtsi- dent McKinley, bis Cabinet, (ien- oral Miles, and many other civic and military dignitaries honored the occasion with their presence and took part in the ceremonies. According to The Ledger time, the first appearance of yesterday’s eclipse of the sun was seen by a Led ger man at sixteen minutes before 8 o’clock. Our old friend and good wheat grow, r, Rev. M. V. Moss, of Kings Creek, lias carried a portion of his family to Piedmont Springs for the sammer. U. C. V and a Carpenter Camp to left ini' phy wherever in the whole world these telenets arc studied and ap preciated. His works are continually cited by the most distinguished scholars of every country oi Europe. In tiie United States he is the ac knowledged-standard bear.r among scientific men. Fur a number of years he was at th* head of the geo logical survey of tho United States and he has discovered and imparted more geological information than any other man on Hie continent. He has unfolded, too, the dark, mysterious history of the North American Indians and made it read like a fairy tale. It is a high privilege to have such a man among us, and the citizens of GulTney and the faculty an l students of Limestone College will give him such a reception as is due to a man of his position ami splendid abilities. It is said that ail the British forces are rapidly advancing, and war ex perts in England arc predicting where “the next great battle will he fought!” This makes us wonder where the last “great battle” was fought. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Boer envoys, Messrs. Fischer, Wolmarans and Weasels are receiv ing in Washington distinguished con sideration us private g< ntlemon, and much sympathy is expressed for them and lln ir cause, hut they can obtain no official recognition from our government. The .Senate ;'ot(d down a resolution to receive them in their official capacity, by a decided major ity, and there is no hope that they will accomplish anything by their errand. Our government is consis tent in its action. To say nothing of its duty to avoid foreign complica tion, common decency would forbid the cheek and impudence which it would exhibit before the world if it were to protest against the game England is playing in the Transvaal, while it is playing precisely tire same game in the Philippines. ♦ ♦ Sixty-two new physicians were re cently licensed and seventeen re jected by the. It will at the same time in utter disregard of the motives that prompted its erection pay the highest possible tribute* to the min who made that monument a possi bility and a seeming necessity. Bridges, formeriy of Gaffney, is now living six miles out west of the city near Algood, and in addition to supplying three churches is playing farmer pretty extensively and successfully, and says he is having plenty cherry pies cluse days.
