Each successive program was better than the one that proceeded it and the last concert was a happy climax. This is the more remarkable wheq one takes into consideration the fact that no one in the entire chorus was in anywise acquainted with the char acter of the work. The chorus was so near perfect as to command the unstinted praises of the artists, and was highly complimented by mem bers the Converse College Choi a! Society who were present. The basso, Mr. Baernsteln, ap peared in the second and third con certs of the festival. H s can be considered one of the greatest suc cesses of the festival. He is truly a great artist, and never before has i such magnificent singing been heard here. In his rendering of his first solo, “The Two Grenadiers,” he roused his audience to a high pitch of enthusiasm, proving that the delightful dramatic fervor shown in artists was a pleasing number. “Fair Ellen,” a cantata, partici pated in by the choral society and the artists closed the eveni- g. Too much cannot be sai i in praise of the work of this chorus. It showed a degree of of training which reflects credit upon Prof. Brown. One hun dred voices trained in this manner speak volumes for the skill and pa tience of tiie teacher. Prof. Brown is a thorough musician and has the happy faculty of being able to impart his accomplishments to others. Besides being an » XLraordinary vir tuoso. he is a genuine musical and deep feeling artist. The tone which he drew from his instrument was al all times wonderfully rich and beau tifully, The storm of applause wliich greet e-d Mrs. Brown’s first appearance proved what a favorite she is with a {South Carolina audience. tfhe pos sessed a pure mezzo soprano voice, the chief characteristic of which is its soul-appealing quility. In uil (nr works she manifested unusual artislic temperament, Mmo. Kileski won instant and lasting favor, The quality of her voice is deliciously pure throughout the range of her extended compute; and her phrasing and interpretation are marked by rare intelligence. In all her numbers she sang without evident effort, whether the number called for llexibility and lightness of treatment or broad sustained power. Her solo part in tbe cantata “Fair Ellen” she sang with great beauty and bread! h, and rose to u suberb chimax at the close. Mr. Herbert Johnson, the tenor possesses a rich voice. He sung with intelligence and a style which, shows that he is an experienced artist. Though suffering from a cold, his numbers were rendered with ddicaej and tenderness. Mr. Craighill mide but one appear ance as orgin soloist, playing the in troduction to the third act ol Lohcti grin. In this number he handled the organ with good judgment and skill, proving himself to be a young artist of unusual ability.
