She has only to be impressed with the im portance of this occasion in order to secure lier hearty cooperation and support. The occasion will mean much both for the town and the college. It’s success will be an achievement which any large city might envy; its failure would be a set back to destroy pres tige and bring shame and humilia tion. Its success will be a great up lift to (lie finer feelings, the purer emotions, the esthetical aspirations of our people—along stride towards purer and higher ideals. The success of one side of the occa sion is already fully assured. The performers and the performance will be equal to the best that the conti nent can produce. The success of the other side is in the hands of the peoole of (jlallney. If they will rise to the demands and the spirit of the occasion, we shall have a big, rousing all-round success which will be felt and enjoyed in its refining and eleva ting influences for many a day and year to come. We have spoken of this enterprise only in connection with the college, but it is not entirely a college move ment. The Chora! Society has among its members many of the people of Gaffney, who are not other wise connected with the college. This fact will give the town a double interest in the occasion. NOTKS AM) COMMENTS. for himself and his wife, his sonJJohn and his wife, those four and no more, is in a state of stagnation and, to use the words of ii great moral philoso pher, hasn’t vitality enough about it to preserve it from putrefaction. Any one win looks hack over the short history of Gaffney, can see that her gyt at progress fins been largely due to the unity of sentiment and purpose that has prevailed among her people. There have been soma men here who have been willing to I mat&e persona! sacrali *es for the pub lic good, and the great body of the people have sustained and honored them. But the town bus not yet reached the limits of its growth. It is just getting ia sight of its possi bilities. Energy, vigilance, and unity are still needed—perhaps more than ever before. A business organiza tion is needed, a business league, a hoard of trade—no mstter what it ia called—to unite our business men and to keep the spirit of the town alive. There have been such organi zations here in the past, but we do not know what has become of them. Such an organization should be re vived with a live man, like L. Baker, at the head of it. It would more than pay for the time and trouble bestowed upon it. w SHORT LOCAL ITEMS. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. People You Know Uriel People You Don’t Know. CITY COUNCIL MEET. P rin K mulch the P atcil pines through and while we should differ with the Senator on some minor points, we pronounce the main argu ments unanswerable. Indeed so far as we know the supporters of im perialism do not attempt to answer arguments. In the presence of greed, selfishness, and vainglory, ar guments, reason, precedent, and the constitution are all like so many straws flying before the whirlwind. It is now asserted positively that Col. Schumpert will again make the race for governor. Besides him there are several oilier eminent gentlemen in the State who are ready to make great personal sacrifices, in order that the people may not lack for exe cutive officers. There is not likely to be any sharp political issues in the gubernatorial race, unless per haps prohibition may be made an is sue. This, however, ought not to be done; as the governor can do nothing officially either for or against prohi bition. Let talent, probity, energy, and personal popularity be the win ning factors in the governor’s race, and make the fight for prohibition in the election of members to the Legis lature. That will be the sensible way of doing things. Last Saturday our streets were crowded with wagons from the coun try, and the air was completely satu rated with the familiar odor of fertili- Zirs. The rise of three cents a pound in cotton has completely soothed and charmed away all of the combativeness displayed against the guano trust a few months ago, and every farmer is making a rush the fortune to be won by pouring fer tilizer and cotton seed into his hun gry soil. If Providence do not again take him in hand he will turn up next fall with little to go into his corn crib, nothing for his smoke house, provided lie has one, with taxes, guano bills, debts of various I , kinds, ail staring him out of counte nance, and nothing to relieve the I situation but a few bales of live-cunt cotton. ICtiUc Cuttle Among the Cherokee farmers who are going to diversify their work this year let some of them begin raising cattle. For that business our climate is good and much of our Cherokee for lands almost unsuited for any other U ! purpose than cattle raising. With these natural advantages and a cotton oil tnili in our midst, the meal and hull products of which are the best fattening feed known for cattle, our farmers have peculiarly fine facilities for the business and we trust that some of them will go inio it in a reg ular business-like way, and give it a fair trial, for we believe it will be very profitable, besides, it will enrich instead of impoverish the soil as cotton does. “Goforth.” A new postoffice with the above name, lias been established at Mr. J.
