Bridges, of this city, lias recently been called to preach at Camp’s Creek tills year, and will meet the congregation at that church next Saturday at 12 o’clock m., and Sunday at 11 o’clock a. m. In the future the following will he Mr. Bridges’ regular appointments for this year: Gaffney, first Sunday ami every Sunday night in each month; Macedonia, second Sunday; Grassy Bond, third Sunday; Camp’s Creek, fourth Sunday. The Town Council or Board of Public Works should get a move on themselves in regard to the electric lighting. The Gaffney Manufacturing Company has been blamed for the poor lighti:ig of the town when tiie fault lay with the council. The company simply furnishes the cur rent as its contract calls for and I lie reason we have no lights is because the council fails to keep the lamps in proper repair. The Mayor’s court yesterday only had two accused to answer charges One was a white man who was charged with breaking open the calaboose and liberating pri mors, ten days ago, was acquit ted an l tumid loose. The other, also n white man, was charged with conduct which should bring the blush of shame to the most callous cheek, was properly con victed and sentenced to pay a line of twenty-live dollars or lo Serve thirty davs on the county chain gang. lie Look • ho (bn s. (inirity. The Ledg. r, several issues ago, pub lished an appeal for help for a poor widow woman with several children. The response was not as liberal as w’e would like for it to have been hut it was sufficient to relievo pressing want. Among those to contribute was a frien l from Blacksburg who simply wrote: “Friend JieCamp:— I enclose a doilar for t he widow you refer to. Will give tnore if needed.” The writer only signed one initial to the letter, but we recognized ic at once ns coming from one of the big gest hearted men in the county. While we were opening and reading the letter another big hearted Blacks* burger gave a half dollar for the cause. Several in Gaffney contribu ted to the cause. To all we exl< nd thanks and assure them that the Lodger will never knowingly impose upon their charity. I.lu'.i'htoae I'olIcKe I'lnislied. Limestone College is finished. Become Interested in the Textile Busi ness in Charlotte. The following item from the Tex tile Excelsior is of more than passing interest to the people of Gaffney as it concerns a number of our best busi- m ss men : “The Alpha Cotton Mills,Charlotte, .Y C., which quite recently came un der the control of 1). A. Tompkins, have been sold. A meeting of the stockholders was held laM Thursday, at which seven hundred shares were represent; d. The meeting meant an absolute reorganization of the mill, Mr. Tompkins having sold out his interest to J. M. Scott. The follow ing are the new directors: II. f). Wheat, of Gafloey, 8. C., President and Treasurer; J. G. Wardlaw, Gaff ney, Secretary; E. B. Springs, P. i). Walker, B I). Heath, F. G Johnson, F. G. Stacy, E. li. Wilbur, J. T. An thony and J. M. Scott. The future policy of the mill has not yet been outlined, but notice has already been given for a change in charter and by laws. J. It. Killian, who has been Superintendent with tho Gaffney, S. C. Cotton Mills, will be the new Su perintendent. A. R. Kale, t he pres ent Superintendent, will return to his former position with the Ather ton Cotton Mills, Charlotte, N. C., as Superintendent. Mr. Wheat was seen by a repre sentative of The Ledger yesterday afternoon. He said: “We have been able to buy a splendid property at a very low fig ure. There are 0,148 spinning spin dles and JOOU twister spindles. We can, with a very little outlay, put the mill in good condition. I told the company we had a good profit on the investment, and 8) we have. A re port of the purchase was made in the Charlotte Observer Friday morn ing. and the very next issue of that paper contained an advertisement offering iSUc. for the stock. We bought il for considerably less than that.” Mr, F. G. Stacy was also seen yes terday. He said: “The mill needs a little repair work and wiil ho good as iicw. It has been allowed to run down. We have thirteen and a half acres of valuable real estate inside Hie corporate limits of the city. We will put the mill in good shape at once.” The L;dg>'r knows that ihe Alpha Mill will be a success from now on. i it has mill men connected with it now who will make il a success. ; There are no more successful mill ^ men in the country than Messrs.
