The Cowpona memorial association has secured some of the land where the Cowpens battle was fought which makes the park a certainty. All Cherokee must lend a helping hand. Business men of other cities are constantly here looking for suitable buildings to open up their business in. And often without being able to find one. Which shows that (Jalfney needs more business houses which must be built. President W. T. Horton, of the Cowpens Memorial Association, re quests The Ledger to state that there will be a mass meeting of the citizens of Cherokee county with the Associa tion in the court house immediately after the sales on salesday, first Tuesday in January. Everyone ought to be present. The Central Executive Board of the Broad River Association will meet at Zion Hill church on Saturday before the 5th 8unday in this month. Churches and individuals having business with the Board, will send commuications to the Rev. J. D. Bai ley, Cowpens, 8. C., or appear at the Board meeting. It is important that the meeting calh'd by President Horton, of the Cowpens Battleground Memorial As sociation, for salesday, first Tuesday in January, be fully attended by the people of Cherokee. There will be some interesting addresses delivered, and matters of great importance to Cherokee county will come up for action. Col. M. F. Jones and Mr. L. Roth, the two most prominent merchants of Yorkville, were in the city Satur day and Sunday and left for their homes yesterday. They both ex pressed themselves as highly pleased with Gaffney. The Ledger trusts that the visit of these preminent gentlemen will result in the estab lishment of two more big merchun- tile houses in Gaffney and place Messrs. Jones and Roth’s names on our list in the census of 1900. Mr. Iteujaiiiin I’erc-rr Deud. Mr. Benjamin Percer, an Irish gen tleman who came to Gaffney about twenty-two or three years ago, died at his home near Lawn, in this county, on the 14th inst. in the 85th year of his age without an enemy in the county and with the friendship of all with whom he was acquainted. Soon after coming to Gaffney he bought a farm near Lawn and com menced farming on the intensive sys tem and opened a country store, both of which ho conducted successfully up to the time of his death and had amassed considerable property. Mr. Percer was a man of fine sense and extensive information was method itself and honesty personified. Mr. Percer’s death was the result of his extreme age. II9 had first- class medical attention and his de voted neighbors vied with each other in their kindnesses to him in his last illness. His remains were hurled at Limestone cemetery on Saturday in the presence of many sorrowing friends. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. T. Creech of the Limestone Street Methodist church. The honorary pall-bearers were: T. H. Littlejohn, R. M. Wilkir.s, A. X. Wood, R. S. Lipscomb. E. L. Tate and R. S. Spencer. The active pall-bearcrs were : I). C. Phillips, J. L. Alexander, J. E. Two freight trains on the Southern collided near Fair Forest yesterday morning. It is hard to get particu lars in such cases, but we learn that considerable damage was done to the trains and that some of the crews were severely hurt. The passenger train from Atlanta, which should have arrived here yesterday at 7 a in., did not arrive till near 2 p. in. This long delay is an indication of the magnitude of the disaster. Miss Minnie Carroll, spent several days last week in the city of the Spar tans, where she has a largo circle of friends and admirers. J. T. Craig, a worthy Cherokee farmer of Macedonia, paid the Ledger an appreciated visit yester day. Dr. and Mrs. J. II. Downey and Mrs. Victor Montgomery, after spend ing about six weeks in New York, Dr. Downey having gone on to at tend lectures at the Post-Graduate College and Hospital in that city, came in on the vestibule Friday morning. Mrs. Montgomery and Mrs. Downey stopped off in Gaffney and spent some time with Prof, and Mrs. H. P. Griffith. J. E. Mosteller, of Grassy Pond, was in the city Saturday A. X. Wood made a flying business trip to Spartanburg Friday. Mr Wood is one of Gaffney’s hustlers and it does not take him a great while to transact a good deal of business. C. C. Davis, of Mercer, was among The Ledger’s callers Saturday. Cherokee can boast of fewer better citizens than Mr. Davis. Junius Sparks, of Home, came up to the city yesterday. I. w\ Phillips, of Bowlinsville, was among the progressive Cherokeeans who called on The Ledger Saturday. Joshua Spears, a prominent plant er of Union county, was in the city yesterday the guest of his brother, il. L. Spears, on Grenard Street. M. M. Freeman, accompanied by his little son, spent several hours in the city Saturday on business. Mr. Freeman is the popular and efficient postmaster at Blacksburg. J. C. Jefferies, one of the most prominent light of the Cherokee bar. spent Friday in Spartanburg on professional business. J. A. Scruggs, of the Battle Ground, was among the Ledger visitors yes terday. J. R. Warmouth, one of The Led ger’s admirers at Hickory Grove, was in the city Saturday with a load of home-made harness and saddles that will excell the cheap machine-made article in quality and finish. Magistrate J W. Alexander was in the city yesterday on business. P. C. Rupp, a progressive citizen of Maud, and a good friend of The Led ger, was in the city Saturday on busi ness. J. L. Strain, Esq , paid The Ledger a pleasant visit yesterday. Charles J. Hughes made an im portant visit to Glendale Saturday. Mr. Jonathan Moore, a venerable and respected citizen from the other side of the Broad, was among the visitors to Gaffney yesterday. W. D. Williams and brother, Isaac, of Ezells, were in the city Saturday to pay taxes and transact other busi ness. Cherokee is proud of the people of the Ezell section and the Williams’ are among the best people of that section. Mr. John Holt, a resident of Chero kee township, was in the city yester day on business. Gus Brannon and Hague Padgett, two former Gaffney hoys who are at present located at Forest City, spent Sunday and a part of yesterday in the city. Both of them have a large number of friends in Gaffney who are always ready and delighted to have the opportunity to extend to tln'in a warm and hearty welcome. Mr. Victor Montgomery came over from Spartanburg Friday evening and spent Saturday night with Prof, and Mrs. Griffith at Limestone.
