J., Nov. 30.—The east- bound ButTalo express on. the Delaware, Lackawaua and Western railroad, while standing outside the station here last night, was run into by a swiftly moving accommodation train bound from Phti- lipsburg, N. J., to Jersey City. Six people were killed and 20 injured. The deal: Willard Craig of the Scranton (Pa.) Tribune. Mrs. Willard Craig of Scranton. Two daughters of Mr. uud Mrs. Craig, aged 10 and 15. Mrs. Daniel Rowe of Ithaca, N. Y. W. J. Wellbrook, Cornell stv.deat of Ithaca, N. Y. C. II. White of lihica, w ill die from his injuries. Daniel Rowo of Ithaca, will also die. The engineer on the aceommodafioa tram was John Riordan. He stuck to his post, but escaped practically unhurt. The lireman is said to have jumped just before tha locomotive struck the end of the smokar. Superintendent Russell of the Lacka- wana road .'•aid that the flagman near the station should have given warning to the approaching tra n and that Rior dan should have seen the red lights on the end of the Buffalo train in time to avoid the accident. Riordan says that the sharp cuyve on the road at that point hid the rear lights on the Buffalo train from view. Whether the station flagman sig nalled the train was not absolutely cleared up last night. Riordan asserts he saw no signals. STATE MAY BUILD A DEPOT. Hill Giving Authority Introduced In the Semite by Mr. West. Atlanta, Nov. "0. — A bill has boon introduced in the senate to authorize the depot commission to contract with the railroads to build a new union sta tion in Atlanta. Senator West introduced the bill, which was read for the first time and referred to the general judiciary com mittee. That committee will prolably take up the bill Monday afternoon. The bill empowers the special com mission to negotiate with the lessee of the Western and Atlantic and with ail the roads entering Atlanta to build a union passenger station on the state’s property, including the present site. The state will reimburse the roads out of the rental for the last three years of the present lease. Under this, plan the state would get a station in 1020 for $3ij0,00t) or .Vi 100,000 that cost $500,000. In addition such an improvement would enable the stato to get a much higher rental after 1020 than it now receives for the Western and Atlantic. On a 30 years’ lease from 1020 to 1050 the rentals from the various roads for the use of the station alone would add at least $750,000 to the state’s treasury, or probably $2 for every $1 which the state pays for the butldiug. Washington, Nov. 30.—Much specu lation is being indulged in by incoming senators as to tho action of the senate in tho case of Senator l^uay of Pennsyl vania. California, Pennsylvania, Utah and Delaware will bo affected by the decision. There will bo a strong disposition on tho part of Mr. Quay’s friends to have his case taken up and considered imme diately, but in this they will bo opposed. The Republican lenders will press the currency question from the beginning of congress. Senator Vest is expected to lead the fight against the seating of Quay. He will do so on the constitutional ground that a governor has no right to appoint a senator when the legislature had an opportunity to elect and failed. OFFICIALS CANNOT AGREE. The Hoiii-d of Hcultli uud Columbia's Mayor Clash. Coi.PMiUA, S. C., Nov. 30 —A clash has occurred between Mayor Lipscomb and the board of health, and it is inti mated that one or the other will resign. Tho board had a butcher arrested, who was charged witli buying and soliiug hogs known to have cholera. The man went before tho mayor, who continued his case, tho meat, ia tho meantime, continuing to be sold. Tho board of health called a special mooting of council, and in the meantime took authority which the mayor did not seem to consider it entitled to and seized tho meat, which is being tested by experts. The mayor’s contention was that tha meat should be tested before its sale was stopped. Charles Wilson Must Hang, Charleston, Nov. 30.—Charles Wil son, the negro who killed Private God frey of the South Carolina battery of heavy artillery, has been sentenced to be hanged. The evidence was all one way, and proved that tho crime was an atrocious one. Godfrey was rebuking the negro for cursing in the presence of ladies, when he was suddenly shot and killed instantly. Judgiucut, Obtained by Waterworks Must lie Settled. Gadsden, Ala., Nov. 30. — A rule nisi has been issued to tbe mayor and aider- men of Gadsden by tho United States court requiring tiieni to appear in Bir mingham Dec. 7 aud show cause why a writ of mandamus should not be issued requiring them to pay no claims against the city of Gadsden other than running expenses, and to appropriate a sum sufficient to liquidate a judgment for I6.6S7.64 and cost to the amount of $.133 50 held in tho United States circuit court. Pending the hearing of the petition for tha writ of mandamus the city of Gadsden is restrained from paying out any money except for necessary ex penses. The judgment in question was ob tained by the Gadsden Waterworks com pany. Atwater Opposes Roberts. Raleigh, Nov. 30.—John W. Atwater, congressman from this district, declares that if no one else will object to the swearing in of Roberts of Utah he will make formal protest.
