DAVENPORT. [CONTINTED I KOM PACK FOl’H.J that the newspapers, b< th secular anti religious, are among her bestTfriends. They have all been exceedingly kind in noticing the progressive move ments of the institution, and these notices cannot be estimated in value. In fact, the power of the press for any cause is beyond human computa tion. The press creates great com mercial enterprises and then levels them again to the earth; the press creates empires and then scatters them to the four winds of the earth; tho press makes governors and presi dents and then humiliates them to the dust of the earth in one day, and the press builds almost ail our col leges and universities by keeping their interests before the minds of our people, For this reason Lime stone is indebted to many newspapers of this and other states for their true friendship and magnificent support, and site cannot do without this, and indeed, she will not have to do with out it. i>ut the wise business men of means who have concentrated their talents and money to tho interest of the col lege cannot be sufficiently honored in tliis world for their big noble-hearted service of love for the rising and fu ture generations of girls incur south ern clime. Think of the noble ser vice and magnanimous contribution*' of the princely Christian gentleman, Oapt. John II Montgomery, whose heart has been planted within her sacred walls through tho ail-wise hand of divine providence. In such a condition who can tell what such a true and tried friend of Limestone may not do for her in the near future considering the fact that ho knows that labor and money invested in brain and heart is more profitable than any other investment under the canopy of heaven. And who is sufficient to portray the magnificent self-sacrifice and pre serving labors of the polished lovable and heroic Christian gentleman who has been the prime and constant fac tor in the modern progressive history of the institution? Ho will never know the true value of itis labors for Limestone and humanity. Neither can others who have been tho con stant observers estimate them, for litis cannot bo known until tho veil of eternity is thrown aside atid the reapers of life’s harvest shall have garnered the fruits of his labors of love. Oapt. II. I*. Griffith's services for the college have been very simi lar to tiie eilorts of the century plant to produce one beautiful flower. Will not tho rewards fur labors done for humanity in Limestone by this ser vant of (iod be realized in ihe fruition of Ins hope for his fellow creatures and the unspeakable glory in his Fa ther’s house above? Time and space forbids me to mention at any great length the efficient and self-sacrificing la bors and magnificent contributions of our own phenomenal business m» i \ iGirmii vi nilc miiv we not expect such a generous man to do for the college which lias al ready gained the best interests of his heart? Then think of tho broad minded, shred business man who has recently given his hundreds to tho institution. 1 mean our own towns man, Mr. A. N. Wood. When he sets his heart and head to accomplish a good end you may depend on success following his eilorts. 1 wish I had time and space to men tion tiie useful labors and magnani mous gifts of suoii men us F. (L Stacy, W. C. Carpel ter, N. Lipscomb, W. C. Hamrick, S. i>. Lzell, Victor i,. Montgomery, and many others whose noble deeds have already been recorded in the “book of life.” What these persevering and untiring busi ness men may yet do for Limestone cun be imagined from what they have already done. Last but not least, 1 must mention the labors of the far-seeing and ex cellent Christian gentlemen, the pres ident of the college, who is now pour ing out as a libation for the institu tion his best young life. Without any doubt he is one of the best col lege presidents in the country, and with the co-operation which he now lias there is no doubt as to the mag nificent future of Limestone.
