THE PEOPLE ENTHUSED. The Executive Committee of the Itattie- Ground Association Held a Mcctlnu East Saturday and Completed the Program and Appointed Marshalls. Only four more days and the day that all Clverokeeans have been looking forward to with pleasant an ticipation will be here. The promise of a brilliant celebration is indeed bright. For some time the efforts of those who undertook the enterprise was looked upon by those who had not become enthused as preposter ous, but as the time for the celebra tion draws nigh the people are be coming enthused and the indications are that the celebration will be one of the greatest events that has tran spired in this section in recent years. Among the distinguished citizens from this and other states that have signified their intention of being present on that occasion are the fol lowing: ‘ Gov. A. D. Candler, of Georgia, Gen. M. C. Butler, of South Carolina. Hon. Amos J. Cummings, of New York, lion. A. C. Latimore, Hon. Stanyarn Wilson, Editor N. G. Gonzales, of the Columbia State, and many other distinguished mem bers of the press from dillerent sec tions of the State. Many others have signified their intention to bo present but at this writing nothing definite can bi^ stated. The Executive Committee of the Cou pons McmorialAssociation met on the Battle Ground Saturday to com plete the final program for the great celebration on the 27th inst. Every thing was arranged. Every item of preparation was discussed and its mode of execution decided upon. In addition to the committee a large number of tlje Battle Ground people were out working like beavers on the stands and seats to be used that day. A well is being dug on the ground. At 12 o’clock all present were sum moned around the Hag-pole when that progressive and patriotic Chero- keean, Muj John F. Jones, was in troduced and in his happy style de livered an eloquent address. He re- fered to the historic ground, de scribed the origin of the nations em blem, told who made it, when it was made and the many vicissitudes through which it had passed. He said he saw before him men who hud fought it, hot now its domain had been extended, the rays of the sun were ever on it and that these same men would bear it aloft and defend it in any clime and keep it steadfast in their re-united country. The Hag was then run up and unfurled over the sacred grounds of Cowpens amid the iieurty cheers of the throng. The Cowpens people are full of enthusiasm, and they work. Their work alone would arouse all Cherokee to action, if it were not already mov ing. The following have been appointed marshals for the 27th, and are ex pected to report to the Chief Mar shal at 7 o’clock a. m., for duty. They have been chosen because of their known efficiency, and are cxt pitted to be on hand promptly: ‘•J. X. Lipscomb, Chief, H. Z Hicks, Anderson Skipper, J. B. Bell, Jesse Wright, Jesse 1’inson, D. C. Uoss, M. W. Brown, Frank McCluny, D. A. Gaston, Albert Bettis, Cabe Wood, J. W. Nance and J. I). Hughes. MX. FAKON, AS USUAL, TO THE FRONT. We note with pleasure that the people of Mt. Baron are manifesting considerable interest in the celebra tion to he held hy the Cowpens Bat tle Ground Memorial Association on the battlefield, Saturday the 27th. These people are proud of their county and its brave men who took part in the battle of Cowpens; tin-y recognize the noble and patriotic ob ject that the association has in view, that is the collecting and preserving of all historic matter relative to the battle, ami the establishment of a National 1’ark and, as public spirited citizens, have contributed to the cele bration fund. Among those who have been ac tive in securing contributions are Henderson Martin, E. R. Sapoch, S. II Rippey and James Martin. Let other communities be up and doing. The celebration must and shall be a great success. Whatever Cherokee county und-Hakes shoal- ways succeeds in and the whole of Cherokee coun y is going to be at 1 he hack of this celebration. • A charrer was yesterday granted I y the -*-cretiiry of stite to the Cow pens Battle Ground Memorial Asso ciation of Gaffney, Cherokee county. The corporators of the association are W. T. Horton, Ezells, 1). A Thomas, Gaffney, E. A. Trescott, Blacksburg, and T. B. Butler, Gaff ney. “The object of the association as set forth in the declaration is to col- het and preserve all historic matter relative to the buttle of Cowpens and secure the establishment of a na tional park at said place. “The object is one that will doubt less commend itselt to South Caro linians everywhere. The associa tion has no capital stock." The above clipping is from the Co lumbia Stale of the 18th, instant, and us the writer says, the object of the Association is one tiiut will commend itself to South Carolinians everywhere. The organization as it stands to day is in an embryonic stale, but composed of the material that it is, it cannot but grow rapidly and suc ceed in ils purpose. The celt bration that is to ho held on the battle Ibdd of Cowpens on Saturday the 27th, will be under the uuspicies of this association and everything points to its being a great success. lu order that the day he made the success it deserves to be every mer chant In the city should close his store and give himself and his em ployees a holiday, The National Bank of Gaffney and A. N. Wood’s batik will observe the day. In or der to accommodate their patrons they will open at <i p. in., and close at U p. in. This is a liberal spirit on the part of the bunkers and it seems to us that it would ho well for other business men to imitate their ex ample. A Gt-nhil <>('lltl«‘iiuui. By the way, we hear that the Presidency of Limestone College has been tendered him by the Board of Trustees and there is a probability that he will accept it. If this should prove to bo a fact, we think we can assure Prof. Lodge that ho will meet with a warm welcome and will he sustained by the solid sentiment of our people. We buy goods in larger quantities than any other Gaffney concern and therefore buy them cheaper. (We have just placed an order for two carloads of shoes, $12,000.00). We sell more goods than stores that have several times the expense that we have and therefore sell them cheaper. We take back and refund money for goods that are not satisfactory and are therefore reliable. We buy and sell for cash only and can therefore do business on the smallest possible margin. Our business increases every week. We are doing a larger busmess than we have ever done. Our business grows because as the people know us better they like our goods and our way of doing business better. We regard our advertisements as contracts with our customers and fulfill them to a letter. We never let a dissatisfied customer go out of the store and consequently they all come back and tell their friends and neighbors about us. We do not claim to do everything. We cannot make you rich, nor can we raise your salary nor increase the price of what you produce to sell, but we do claim that weean make your money go further and buy more good, substantial, re liable goods than any other concern can. One visit will con vince you of this. Our store is now stocked with everything needed for Spring and Summer wear. The goods are absolutely the best and the prices positively the lowest. We sell for cash only. Your money Is worth more than any man’seredit and as we have only one price, you can buy just as cheap as any man on earth and a little child can buy just as cheap as you can.
