Local News from Town and Country TOO SHORT FOR A HEAD Hut None Too Short to Mention, Hence They Are liolled Down For Ouh k Iteml- Injf by ; Husy ^Ledger Tatrons Who Are Pressed for Time. The county pension board met in the court house Friday. The first fog in March was on hand on the morning of the 4th. A large force of men went to work on J. S. Littlejohn’s new house Fri day. Miss Lillian Service has sent in the correct answer to T. J. G.’s first question in our issue of March 1st. There was a severe hail storm in the lower part of the county Friday, extending from Grindali viaGowdeye- ville and Fine Grove to Broad river. The crowd was not largo in the city yesterday. Cherokee people have not yet learned to go to the court house on salesduy just because it is sales day. Young Mr. Swafford one the sales men in the “Fair.” The new store to he opened in Gaffney is a Cherokee boy who lias made himself a good reputation in Spartanburg. Yesterday morning come in clear, but soon, the clouds were heavy and by noon snow was falling heavily, and continued till 3 o'clock, when it began to clear up and get warmer giving us a rather muddy but otherwise pleas ant afternoon. The regular monthly meeting of the Business Men’s Association will be held in the office of N. II. Little john (rear of postoffice) .this evening, at 7 o’clock. All members are earnestly requested to be present, us business of vital interest to the asso ciation and Gaffney will come up. One of South Carolina’s most cultured ladies and a valued friend of die paper in renewing her subscrifton to The Ledger takes occasion to say. ‘ Your beautiful editorials are ever so much enjoyed and the readers of your entertaining and progressive paper find its coiemns up-to-date with the current news.” All of which is duly appreciated at this end of the line. A Few Facts. Last May Mr. Charles A. E. Harriss brought Lieutenant Dan Godfrey and his British Guards Band out from London to Canada. The engagement entered into was for three weeks. The overwhelming success of this engagement was extended to seven weeks, during which time some eighty concerts were given in the Dominion, at which performances over two hun dred and twenty three thousand paid admission. The receipts in Mon treal, May 20, were in excess of $0,000 (matinee and evening), whitest the receipts in Toronto on May 30 and 31 (one mantinee and two evenings), approximated closely to $10,000, probably tho largest receipts ever earned in so short a period by any other military band in the world. Eleven performances in all were given in Toronto, at the last of which (open air) on June 20,21,000 people were present at the matinee and evening performance. Mr. Hariss, contemp lating an American tour in 1890, decided at the close of Ids Canadian tourney last summer, and prior to the return of the British Guards Band to England, in order to test the critics of the New York press and the gen eral feeling of the public, to give a few concerts in New York. The press proved unanimous in their verdict of commendation. The public were delighted. Scenes of the greatest enthusiasm were witnessed and unprecedented were the ovations tendered the great leader and his band by the audiences which nightly crowded the building. This telebratcd band will be uc Converse College Spartanburg next Saturday afternoon and night. rnclaiiueil Letters. It is used externally. That is the only sensible and safe way to relieve morning sickness, headache, tightness, swollen, hard or rising breast. West Virginia's chief magistrate recommends Pc-ru-na, the National Catarrh Remedy and Nerve Tonic. EFRESENTATIVE MEN are slow to speak for publication. This is be cause their influence is so great. Tho endorse ment of Governors, Senators and Congressmen guarantees merit. Public words of praise from such prominent officials must bo based on positive knowledge. The recognition which the catarrh remedy Pc-ru-na is constantly receiving by men of national fame is very gratifying. Among recent letters from persons of eminence is the following from Governor Atkinson of West Virginia. The governor says: Chablrston, West Va., March 9, 1898, The Pe-ru-na Medicine Co., Columbus, O. Gentlemen:—“ I can recommend your pre scription Pe-ru-na as a tonic. Its reputation as a cure for catarrh is excellent, it having been used by a number of people known to mo with the very best results.” Very truly, Gov. G. W. Atkinson. l V'Y'.'V Gov. G. W. Atkinson ol West Virginia. Catarrh is the national disease. Not an American family is free from it. The search for relief and cure is con stant. Experiments of all kinds are continually made without result for good. Ignorance of the causes and nature of catarrh is universal. Catarrh ^ is elusive, persistent, penetrating. It may exist in any organ of the body. For this national malady there exists the national scientific remedy Pe-ru-na which for forty years has been doing® grand work. Pe-ru-na is the unflinching foe of catarrh and overcomes it wherever it may exist. It is the prescription of Dr. Hartman, President of the Surgical Hotel, Columbus, O., who gives personal attention, without charge, to a voluminous correspoudence on the subject of catarrhal diseases. Dr. Hart man's books on catarrh arc mailed on application. All druggists sell Pe-ru-na. wrecKM rr Out immense sales of Patent Medicines at wrecked prices goes merrily on from day to day.
