A large and appreciative audience of women and children of all denomi nations were assembled in the Pres byterian church of Gaffney, Friday, Dec. 2nd., and for one hour and a half listened with the greatest inter est to a lecture delivered by Miss Ella Davidson, of Yorkville, S. C., now a recently returned missionary of the Presbyterian Mission, of Hang chow, China. For seven years Miss Davidson has been an earnest worker in the foreign field, and as she spoke of the misera ble, hopeless lives of those who know not the true God let us trust that many hearts were stirred to action in the great work of proclaiming the blessed news of salvation to those who sit in darkness. Miss Davidson returned to the “Home Land'’ to regain her health. Although far from strong,>he is much improved, and hopes to resume the work in China next year. May many souls be given for her hire. About Posting Lands. At its recent session, the genen.l assembly made material changes in the statutes relating to the posting of lands. The law as it now stands is as follows: Section 170. Every entry upon the lands of another, after notice from the owner or tenant prohibiting the same, shall be a misdemeanor, and be punished by a fine not to exceed one hundred dollars or imprisonment with hard labor on the public works of the county not exceeding thirty days: Provided. That whenever any owner or tenant of any lands shall post a notice in four conspicuons places on the borders of any land prohibiting entry thereon, and shall publish once a week for four succes sive weeks such notice in any news paper circulating in the county where such lands are situate, a proof of the posting and of publishing of such notice within twelve months prior to the entry, shall be deemed and taken as notice conclusive against the per son making entry as aforesaid for hunting and fishing. The election of oilieers of Granard Lodge, No. 18G, Ancient Freemasons, held Monday night, December 5th, resulted in the re-election of all the old officers, who are R. M. Gaifney, Worshipful Master, B. F. Camp, Se nior Warden; W. H. Ross, Junior Warden; J. E. Mosteller. Treasurer; H. Fay Gaffney, Secretary. The Lodge will install its officers on Tuesday night, Dec. 20th, when it will give an oyster supper ^free of charge to its members, to visiting Masons, and to a small number of invited guests. Tlie supper giver by this Lodge last December was one of Waterworks Bonds to be Issued. The town council at its last meet- intr passed an ordinance to issue $18,000 bonds to build a system of waterworks, all the necessary legal steps leading up to the issue has been complied with, and we hope in the near future to have an abundance of pure water. This is an enterprise of which our city should be proud, as it will have a great tendency to promote good health, and will materially reduce the insurance on property in town and be a great source of comfort and pleasure during the dry summer months for street and lawn sprinkling purposes. Surratt a member of years ago took out a life insurance policy with the New York Life In surance Company. The policy was know as the tontene accumula tive policy. About eignt years ago the policy was lost. .Mr. Sarratt, however, continued to pay the premium until about four and a half years ago when he ceased his pay ments. As a consequence of the liberal extended insurance feature which is granted by tiiis company the policy was carried on and the company has notified the family that they will pay the full face of the policy. Mr. C. K. Belue, the gentle manly agent of the company for this territory, was in Gaifney this week attending to the settlement of the policy. -— The Curtis Monument. The monument erected to the memory of the late Dr. Thomas Cur tis, at the Limestone church in ISoD by the allumni of the Limestone Springs Female High School, is still in a fair state of preservation. But we think if it was moved to the campus of Limestone College it would be better cared for and in a more appropiate place—on the ground he did so much to make historic. All Gaffney, was delighted Sunday, when wo saw it announced in the daily press, that the State Bap tist Convention would meet in our city next year. The next meeting of the State Baptist Convention is a prize that all our people of all re ligious faiths coveted and put ail their forces together to get. Gaffney heartily thanks the Convention for accepting her invitation and hopes to give it a welcome that will make it glad that it came. — -—— County Commissioners Meet. The County Commissioners met Monday in the Supervisor’s office. They declined to take any action in the matter of free ferries across Broad River, Also defered action in loca ting the county poor farm. They approved the bond of Sheriff-elect W. \V. Thomas. None of the other officers elected presented theirs. The balance of the business transac ted was of^a routine character. Salesday. Salesday brought a considerable crowd to the city Monday to attend the public sales. Every section of the county hud its representatives present. Many were interested in the sales. Others came on other business or just because it was sales day. The stores all seemed busy and Treasurer Jones seemed to have a busy day receiving taxes. An Invitation. The Ledger invites its friends to visit its office on press days, Wednes day afternoons and nights, and see it printed by steam power.
