Gaffney and Cherokee county,, together with our friends and neigh bors will celebrate the day in grand style. The meeting called for last Friday night met at The Ledger office and after discussing the matter adjourned to meet Monday night at the court house. Monday night a good sized crowd met at the court house and discussed the matter. Kd. II. DeCamp was made chairman and If. C. Allien secretary. The chairman stated the object of the meeting and outlined a plan of celebration. l*ut- riotic and enthusiastic addresses were made by Col. T. I». Ifutler, Capt. J. If. Bell and others. On motion by Mr. Butler the Chair was niKhorized to appoint an executive committee of twelve. This committee was authori zed to select the necessary sub-com mittees. The chair appointed on the executive committee the following gentlemen: S. L. Cutting, E. J. Burnett, T. B. Butler, .1. Little. F. G.Stacy, J.B.Bell. M.G. Montgomery, Or. C. T. Lipscomb, L. Baker, Mayor X. 11. Littlejohn, Col. J. G. Wurdlaw, and E. L. Eison. On motion it was decided that the executive committee should meet at the National Bank of Gaffney Wednesday night to appoint the Sub-committees. Another general meeting will he held at the court house tonight to hear the report of the executive com mittee. Every man in Gaffney who is interested in the progress and ad vancement of Gaffney and the county is expected to be at the meeting to night. The executive committee desires the. support of all in this undertaking. They not only want a good time for them selves and their friends but they want to pusli Gaffney and Cherokee county to the front rank. This is one of the ways to do it. Already our friends in the country arc talking about the Fourth of July celebration in Gaffney. A gentleman was in the city yesterday and called at The Ledger office. In the course of conversation he said : “Push the Fourth of July celebration for all it is worth. We people in the country like to come to Gaffney when you have a big day. It relieves the monotony of farm life. Besides, we like to mingle with our friends in the city. It makes us feel closer to each other and creates a brotherly feeling. By ail means pusli your Forth of July celebration. We will help you out." Another gentleman from the coun try said: "Do all you can for the Fourth of July celebration. If the Gaffney people can't raise the money •I am in favor of appointing a man at every postoffice in the county to so licit funds for the celebration. Have a place for the old veterans and they will help the movemens along." We thank our friends for the interest taken and will do all in our power to help give them a great day on the Fourth of July. —• J. TUCK M’CRAW IS NO MORE. Another of Cherokee's Best Citizens Called to His Reward. The city was saddem 1 on Tuesday by the intelligence of the death of Mr. J. Tuck McCraw, which occured at the old Met’raw homestead on that day. Mr. McCraw had been sick such a short while that few were aware of his illness. It was only to day week that he started to his farm in apparant health. On the way he was attacked with a fit of vomiting. He returned to his home and sum moned a physician, who did all he could for the sufferer but without avail. The time for his departure was at hand and all that loving hands and skilled physicians could do availed nothing. The summons came Tuesday morning and the end was quiet and peaceful. The enterment took place yester day at State Line Grave yard in the presence of a large concourse of ad miring friends. J. Tuck McCraw was one of the best men in Cherokee county. Every body who knew him loved hiui. He possessed the virtues- chat go to make up the true ajan. Hie honor and integrity bkve never been ques tioned by aqy one. For five yours he was a trusted employee of Carroll & Carpentgt, ci this city, and during hie connection with the firm he made rotlny friends by his gentle demeanor 4nd fair dealings. He has been a successful clerk, farmer, and teacher. He was a candidate for clerk of the court of this county in the first elec tion and although be did not win the prize he polled a most creditable vote. On all sides we hear him spoken of as a true, generous and brave man. Cherokee county can ill afford to part with such men us J. Tuck McCraw. Deceased leaves a wife and four children together with a large con nection of relatives to mourn his loss. The Construction of the Buildings W*s Commenced Last Saturday. '■ Work on the construction of the buildings for the Gaffney Carpet Man ufacturing Company was commenced last Saturday afternoon. When a Ledger representative called at the site Tuesday afternoon he found that work was being pushed vigorously. Already one is enabled to get a, fair idea of the magnitude of the build ings to bo constructed. Foreman Curry was pushing matters for all he was worth. The contract calls for the completion of the buildings about the middle of next month and Mr. Curry says if they uro not delayed in receiving the lumber he will have the buildings completed on time. The reporter found President Bierck busily engaged at iiis desk, but be courteously received The Ledger and gave out some ii.teresting tacts con cerning this new enterprise. There will be six buildings. The main building will be 123 feet Oj inches by 71 feet 1 inches, two stories high, with a storage room underneath. There will be an annex 12 feet 1<> inches by 71 feet 1 inches. The di mensions of the other buildings will be as follows: Office—II by 22 feet 1 inch; engine room—12 feet, 1 inch by 20 feet; boiler room—12 feet J inch by 10 feet; dye house—b) feet by 12 feet 1 inch. Besides these buildings the company will erect all necessary outhouses and tenement houses for the operatives. The com pany has a magnificent water supply and will erect and operate its own private water works. A 'water tank of 100.000 gallons capacity will be constructed for general purposes and a smaller tank will be built for sprinkling purposes. The company will use GUO 000 cubic feet of water annually. Both male and female op eratives will bo employed but the male element will predominate. The machinery has been ordered and is of the latest and most improved pattern. This is the first mill of the kind erected south of Pennsylvania. The company proposes to lay off the grounds in walks and otherwise beautify them. They have thirty acres of land and will make it one of the most attractive mill sites in the south. Mr. Bierck, the president and manager, is a thorough and prac tical carpet mill man, having been in the business since he was thirteen years of age and has hud experience in all the various departments. He is a most courteous and affable gen tleman and one calculated to make many friends. He states that the company have already sold all the goods they can make for some time to come. We welcome the advent of this new enterprise in our midst and with for the promoters the success they so richly deserve. There is no word so full of meaning and about which such tender and holy recollections cluster as that of “ Mother ”—she who watched over our helpless infancy and guid ed our first tottering step.
