Our armers have been working with such snergy that few of them have been to ,he city, so Gaffney has been quiet ndeed. with few events occurring to ■nrich our local columns. Our cor- •espondents, too, have failed to do heir full duty, so The Ledger will je short this week of some of its most nteresting features. Bucklen’s Arnica Salve. Policemen are stationed at corners of streets upon which is situated the residence of United States Minister Woodford, who will begin final prepar ations for his departure from Madrid. Navy is ready, and troops are being transported to, and are arriv ing on the Southern coast of this country. The indications now are that Spain will not evacuate Cuba and all hope of averting war has beer, abandoned. LATEST. It is reported that-tbe liothchilds have told Spain to evacuate Cuba or they would withdraw their tinnnciul support from her and that France has also advised Spain to evacuate. . •- DIED OF HER INJURIES. The Shooting of Ellen Wood Proves Fatal. Last Wednesday night about 11 o’clock the bell on the colored Bap tist church tolled, and to the uniniti ated created some alarm, but to the colored class it told that Ellen Wood was dead. Ellen was the woman mentioned lust week as having b**en shot on the night of the liOtli ult., while she was asleep in her bed in her house by some one on the outside who took one of the lights out of the window in order that the wors could be done more perfectly. Ellen lingered with her wound until the time mentioned and died after great suffering. Blood poison having eet in almost from the first. Cornier A. J. McCraw was sum moned Thursday morning by tele phone, and, with his usual prompt ness, was soon at the scene. About 2 o’clock, p. in., he empaneled the jury of inquest, composed of J. It. i'olleson, foreman, John W. Bridges, J. A. Gaffney, M. L. Ross, A. C. Pridmore, Win. T. Thompson, W. F. Smith, W. S. Hall., Jr., W. F. Brown, E. D. Littlejohn. D. S. Col lier, H. H. Thomas and Abe Smith. Four of the jury were intelligent colored men. Coroner AfcCraw had the jury to view the body and had Dr. Crawley to explain the nature of the wound. He then carried the jury to the council chamber and took the testi mony. Several persona were sworn but little, if anything, was elicited to throw any light on tho dark and bloody deed. Notwithstanding the earnest efforts of the coroner and his intelligent jury, they were compelled to return the following verdict: That the said Ellen Wood came to her death as a result of blood poison, superinduced by a gun shot wound indicted upon her person at the hands of party or parties unknown to the jury. We trust and believe that proper efforts will be made to bring the murderer or murderers to justice. We believe it is more in the power of the colored people to do this work than it is in the white people, and we think that they will be equal to the emergency. - A Genial Representative. Geo. A. Letford, the gentlemanly representative of H. E. Bucklen *fc Co., who travels this territory for that firm, was in the city Thursday and renewed his advertising contract with The Ledger. Mr. Letford and his house are justly classed among the most prompt and business like peo ple in America. They make friends as well as transact business. If we had a few more business people in this country like them there would De less room for fakirs and advertis ing sharks. Cotton Market. GAFFNEY TO HAVE BASEBALL The Boys arc Now Getting in the Proper Shape. Last Thursday and Friday Clitbe Hopper had u force of hands and serufiers at work on the baseball grounds at Limostono and the grounds are now in excellent condi tion. The boys have ordered a sup ply of baseball material, which is expected to arrive today. The boys will go out to practice today and it is proposed to have a scrub game be tween the fir.-it i nd second nines Fri day afternoon. Gaffney lias splendid material fora baseball team this year. Among the players who have acquit ted themselves with credit on the diamond in seasons gone by art Tom Brown, Isom Richardson, Barney Clary. Prof. Hall, Charley Humph ries. Henry Smith and Logan Ross, besides several other good players. There is nothing which advertises a town so much as a real good base ball team, and besides, it affords a great deal of innocent sport during the usually dull summer season. For these two reasons the boys should be encouraged. Our business men could make no belt r investment than to chip in and he;p the boys to equip themselves with the proper piiurapliunalia. There will ue no charges to witness the games that will be pi lyed here and it is proposed to invileall the nearby towns to come over and try their hand. Let us have a crack-L-jack team an igive them the proper support. Watch Gaffney s baseball team this year. — - Contract Let.
