The News from Town and Conntry Boiled Down for the Special Benefit of Busy Led ger Readers. The Rev. Mr. Thomason will preach at Ararat next Sunday. The Cherokee county pension board will meet in Gaffney on the 27th inst. G. \V. Gagj, of the Chester bar, was elected Judge of this circuit^last Tuesday. There will be services at Bulah next Sunday. Song service on Sat urday at 2 p. m. All are invited. R. A. Jones has built a pretty new cottage on East Frederick Street, which is occupied by Sumter Little john. Uncle John McCullough, the faith ful old colored blacksmith, has moved from his old shop, but is still in the city. The Standard Oil Company will erect an oil tank near the O. R. & C. depot. J. D. Templeton will have charge of it. Thomas H. Westrope, late of Cin- cinnatti, has come to Gaffney and opened a jewelry store in Feagle cfc Price’s store. The township pension board met last monday. Several new applicants appeared before it. In order to give all a chance the board will call an other meeting. The medals for tho best shot and the best drilled soldier in the Gaffney Light Infantry are on exhibition at Daniel’s Jewelry Store. Tho contest will be a hot one. There will be preaching at Centre View school house next Sunday even ing at I) o’clock, p. m. The Sunday School will meet at 2. Children please be present. Wo heard from our old friend Whittaker Ramsey last week. He seems to be doing well at his home in Kings Mountain, but we had rather have Him in Gaffney. Dr. J. N. Nesbit, of Chicks Springs, has moved to Gaffney. We learn that Dr. Nesbit has associated him self with Dr. S. M. Crawley in the practice of medicine and the drug business. Owing to an unusual number of correspondents this week it has been found necessary to omit several. We assure our friends we regret our ina bility to accommodate ail. We sim ply could not get the matter up. The North Carolina Rolling Expo sition will exhibit in Gaffney on Fri day Jan. 21st., open 2 :30 p. m. to 10 p. in. and Saturday Jan. 22nd, 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. It will prove interesting to those who take the opportunity to inspect it. Bruce & Brissie, two enterprising young men of Spartanburg, have rent ed the pretty store-room, next door to Wopd’s bank, and will in the next few days, open up a fine stock of general merchandise. Welcome to you. young men. The mamy friends of old Uncle Isaac W. Guyton will regret to learn that the old gentleman is now very feeble. Mr. Guyton is one of the oldest and most highly respected citizen of Cherokee and he has the sympathy of all who know him. The programme of services at tho Episcopal church henceforth will be : Sunday school 8 p. m., evening ser vice and sermon 4 p. m.. and evening service and lecture every Wednesday evening at 7:80 p. m. All are cor dially invited to attend both Sunday and weekday services. H. C. Barks, for several years a prominent merchant here, has con cluded to return to his old North State and open up a general merchan dise business in Concord. Mr. Parks will leave many friends in Gaffney who regret to part with him, but who wish for his success In his new home. Mr. Moses Wood, whose house was burned on the 7th inst., received a check on the 17th inst. from the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company, of Hartford, Conn., with which he was insured, through tho company’s agents, at this place. Wood & Smith, for the full amount of his insurance. • Major John F Jones, of the Cherokee Inn, Blacksburg, Isa man of whom this county should be proud A genial, wholesouled fellow, who is always cheerful and working for tho advantage of his people, he has done much for Blacksburg that no othej man could have done and his worth should be appreciated. Among those who have added their names to Thk Lkdgkk’h growing list this week were J. W. Duff, A. A. Gaston, D. J. Anthony, and J. R. Hualun, all of our neighboring sister city, Blacksburg. We tan only trust they will find the paper as entertain ing us they expect it to be and alto gether deserving of their patronage. William Harris died at his home, near here, last Sunday, and was burled at tho Lockhart burying ground last Monday. Mr. Harris had passed his three-score years and ten. He was ono of the old Iron workers of this section. Ho leaves a large number of relatives and friends who have the sympathy of Thk Ledoeb. People You Know and People You Don’t Know. Asbury McCraw, of Grassy Pond, was hero Thursday. Mr. McCraw is one of the most progressive farmers in his neicliborhood and raises his own supplies. L. C. Kirby, of the United States revenue service, was in the city yes terday. Mr. Kirby is from .Spartan burg and is a quiet unassuming young gentleman. He added bis name to The Ledger’s list while here. J. T. Sepoch, of Blacksburg, was in the city last Thursday and made us a pleasant call. Bryant Fowler, an old friend of The Ledger, was in the city last Monday. Thos. Owensby, of Star Farm, was in town Friday and enlisted with The Ledger’s host of readers. L. C. A. Clary, of Gowpens, was in the city last Monday. His call on The Ledger was tho kind that make friends like each other. Preston Bridges, of Byarsville, N. C., called on The Ledger last Thur sday while on a buiness trip to the city. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Turner, of Earls, N. C., were in tho city last Thursday on their way to visit Mrs. Turner’s mother in this county. Mrs. Nancy Mize, a worthy old lady of Ravenna, was in the city last Monday. J. M. Allison, of Blacksburg, was in the city last Tuesday. J. S. Paris, and J. A Scruggs, two old Buttle ground fellows were in the city last Thursday. Both of them are full of battle ground information of interest,and are strongly in favor of the Goverment making old Cowpens a beautiful park. The Ledger joins them and insists on every effort being made until the park is a fact. J. S. Cunningham, of Grover, was in the city last Monday and called on The Ledger. J. C. Jefferies, Esq., left yesterday afternoon for Columbia, where he goes to appear before the Supreme Court to argue a case. May success attend him. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Foster, of Inman, are in the city on a visit to their daughter Mrs. J. N. Lipscomb. Jimmie Steele, of State Line, was in the city last Tuesday. Frank Petty, of Cowpens, was in the city last Monday. Mr. Petty is a friend of The Ledger and paid us his usual call. James Sparks, of Asbury, was in the city lust Tuesday. Z. B. Surratt, one of Gaffney’s promising young men, left last Fri day for Texas where he expects to make his future home. Boyd has many friends at his old home who wish him much success in the ‘‘Lone Star” State. Thomas Cabiness, of Shelby, N. C.. was in the city last Thursday and spent the night with his relative, W. T. Thompson. Wm. J. Thomas, of Thickety, was in the city last Friday and called on The Ledger. Asbury McCraw and J. P. Holt, of Grassy Pond, were in the city last Thursday. They gave us a pleasant cull. , J. R. Blanton has moved tojthe Bur- gessplace.one mile and a half this side of bis old place. J. Riley is one of Cherokee’s prominent citizens and a jolly good fellow. He wrs in the city Friday and gave us a pleasant call. Miss Mamie Turner, of Earls, N. C.. was in the city last Thursday on a visit to Miss Ola Byars. J. P. Holt, of Grassy Pond, was in the city Ihursduy. He subscribed for The Ledger. Our Hopes Blasted. Several weeks ago we addressed a letter to Prof. D. A. DuPre, of Wofford College, asking him to fur nish us with an article giving the re sult of his analysis of the King’s Mountain coal. The following letter has been received which speaks for itself: * Wofford College. Spartanburg, Jan. 18th. Mr. Ed. H. DeCamp, Editor ‘ Led ger,” Gaffney, S. C.: Dear Sir:—I regret that I have not time to comply with your request to write you an article for publication on the King’s Mountain ’’coal.” But you are at liberty to state that, after a somewhat careful examination of specimens obtained by me during a hurried visit to King’s Mountain, a few days ago, and of others sent me from the diggings of tho King’s Mountain gold mine, my conclusion is that they are not coal. They are specimens of graphitic schists. The b«st sent me do not contain more than 2o% of carbonacious matter, being largely made up of lime, sand and iron minerals. Other specimens are simply weath ered fragments of tourmaline and of hornblende. Yours very truly, D. A. DuPre. Some Marriages. Frank Burgess and Miss Etta Kpurks were married last Sunday by Rev. Mr. Davis. John Dunlap and Miss Mary Ewing were married on the 17th Inst by Rev. I. W. Newberry. Thomas Histar and Miss Anna Pat terson were married on the 15th inst., by J. G. Wardlaw, N. P. William Helf and Miss Rachel Har ris were married Sunday, the Kith inst., by J. C. Jefferies, Notary Public. Judson Clary and Mias Novilla Harold were married last Thursday by W, T, Thompson, N. P. These young people are of Cherokee’s most worthy people and have the good wishes of The Ledger. CHEROKEE’S FERTILIZER CO. A Large and Paying ^establishment in Operation at Blacksburg. At the base of a large hill to the west of Blacksburg, and a few hundred yards from the Cherokee Inn, on the Ohio River it Charleston Railroad, is located an enterprise of some magni tude of which one tenth of the in habitants of Cherokee county are unaware. It is a branch of the Vir- ginia-Carolina Fertilizer Co. A rep resentative of The Ledger visited this establishment Monday. The ge- iiial manager, Mr. D. J. Anthony, re ceived The Ledger man with a cor diality characteristic of a Virginian and tor some time conducted him through the gigantic frame building, describing at some length the work ings of the same. The Virginia-Car- olinaCompany is a large corporation whose business is to manufacture fertilizers. The product compares most favorably with that of similar enterprises. The capacity of this brance located in Cherokee county is 200 tons of high grade fertilizers per day. They make acid phosphate and all grades of complete fertilizers. The goods are sold ail over the country, some having been shipped as far as San Michael.Agores Island,and island in the Atlantic Ocean under the Port ugese government, but the principal shipments are in tho Carolmas and Georgia. Phosphate rock, from the mines t near Charleston, kainit, syl- vanite and muriate of potash, from Germany, and amoniates from Ne braska, Illinois and Kansas, are the principle ingredients which are used in the manufacture of the fertilizers. The stockholders are Virginia, North and South Carolina capitalists. S. T. Morgan, of Richmond, is president. The different brands sell at retail at from $20 to $25 per ton. These goods are handled in this place by J. I. Sar- ratt, and it is said that they give the utmost satisfaction. It strikes us that it would be the proper thing for Cherokee county farmers to use —everything being equal—these gu anos and show their appreciation of a home enterprise. Until we learn the lesson of patronizing home enter prises we cannot hopu to be as suc cessful as our Yankee cousins. Not only does this apply to fertilizers but to all other matters.
