Is the public property of the city and county to be devoted to private purposes? Perhaps the c ! ty or coun ty is in the wagon business. With out stopping to ask to whom the numerous wagons now standing on the county and city lot belong to we rise to remitrk Hint county and city property should not be used to store the property of private individuals. Instead of that the property should be beautified and laid out into walks that it iniguL be pleasant for the eye to look upon. What say you Mayor Wood and Supervisor Lip scomb? The crowd of fakirs which go with the Wallace shows should he iu the penitentiary or chain-gang. We know that it is said that be who bites at another man’s trick is as guilty as theothor u-llow and tlud it is a case of “do" on Luth side, only that the other fellow docs t ho "do ing,” still we cannot hut believe that the person who holds out the bait is the guiltier of the two. Cannot our county officers see to it that the lew against faKirs is better enforced than it was at Blacksburg .Monday. From Urn number of chattel mort gages being sold it is evident that cotton is telling upon our furmeis. We are sorry to see for we wish son for his action as attorney for Mewbold the slayer of Turner. But in its issue Sunday it exonerated him of any blame. Cheek up. We are not as bad off as we sometimes think we are. There are many ptople in this world who are in a worse condition than the man who raises five cent cotton. PRESS OPINION. The drift of opinion in all parties is that the general result of the elec tions of Tuesday the 2nd instant, was favorable to Bryan and free sil ver. That seems to be the logical and happy deduction.—Edgefield Chronicle. . ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ In view of all Hie facta, Mr. New- bold paid Judge Aldrich a very high r , , . . comnliment when he declined to be r.oivKK th. price m, r»ul cstute. ; He „ a3 „ vid „ nt . The high rate at which property is jy ol - ^j )e 0 pi tl iun that Ins plea “u< being held is keeping many good citi zens from settling in our midst. What Next ? (Cori espoi. fence of The Ledp-er.) When Gov. Ellerbe called in the con stables and removed the Metropoli tan police, people all over the State rejoiced from the fact that they thought this would put an end to Hie long list of bloody deeds which have been committed since the beginning of the “octopus," but tiiey now feel that they have rejoiced too soon, as the most appalling, blood-curdling murder ever heard of in the grand old Palmetto »Stute has just beet, committed, and this one committed by the high *‘muek-a-muck" of them all—the Governor’s pet spy. What are we row to (•xp , 'ef? God only knows. If this condition of affairs is allowed to exist it will only be a matter of time’till respectable citizens will only go out in broad daylight for fear of being shot down by some cow ardly cur who calls himself a “con stable," and it will be dangerous for ladies and children to be caught alone on the public highways lest they should be suspected of carrying liquor and be fired upon without provoca tion and without cause. Cannot this state of affairs be remedied? Must we go on and he compelled to submit to such outrages, when our very lives are in danger? 1 cannot see how a God-fearing Governor can allow such bullies and cowards as N’twbold to hold such high offices. If we must have these offices for heavens sake give us good men for them, men who have some regard for hu man life, and some judgment and discretion as to how to proceed to capture transgressors of the law, and then for the sake of our fort fathers cident" needed a little of the salve of time cast about it.—Spartanburg Her ald. ♦ ♦ Howie, the man who was with Newbold when his pistol was dis charged with deadly effect in Spar tanburg county Wednesday morning, was tried for the murder of a Negro in Greenville county who was shot In Hie back—by some one. Howie was acquitted. He was not guilty. He killed the man in self defense we be lieve.—Greenville News. Governor E1U rbe has onitted all mention of the State dispensary in his thanksgiving proclamation. Yet he like tm* rest of us ought to he thankful that it is going, with all its vt xing issues and ramify ing problems. No one, indeed, should he gladder than the governor. It has been the cause oi per cent, of Lis execu tive ills.—Columbia State. ♦ ♦ ♦ * It would save much valuable space for news if our Northern contempo raries would be sure of their facts in regard to Southern matters before preaching so much to Hie benighted people of this section. Now it is a deluge of lectures to Georgia on its depravity because the Legislature of that State was reported to be on the point of passing a bill to legalize prize lighting. The story was a fake, out and out, the invention of some irresponsible journalist in At lanta.—News and Couier. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ The O. I’, houses ere again in luck. The Stale’s appeal from Judge Simon- ton’s decision in the Bamberg case, which Attorney General Barber went to Richmond, Va., last week to argue before the 1'nited fMaUs Appeal Court, could not be heard, and the ca-e had to go over, and cannot be Cowpens Chronicle.
