Gaffney in a hustling town. In every quarter wo hear the sounds of industry. Who of our farmers will take up the poultry business next year and push it to success. Potatoes and turnips are pretty good in this section. We have seen some good specimens. The hog crop is still a prominent factor in Cherokee. Three and four hundred pounders are pretty thick. Very little corn is being offered on our maraet this fall. We fear that the dry weather last summer ren dered the crops below what will be needed. The Cherokee Bakery furnished the cakes for the Montgomery-Me- Arthur wedding Tuesday night. They were very artistic and a credit to the firm. Messrs. Boss Moore have accepted a contract to do some grading for the Southern at Concord, N. (’., and have moved their stock and tools to that point. A good quantity of cotton is now being sold in Gaffney at the prevail- ' ing low prices. Our farmers are | coming right up to the scratch, and j making the sacrifice like men. We have been requested to an- | nounce that next Sabbath, the 24th, i will be “Missionary Day” at Provi dence church, and that the public have a cordial invitation to attend. Contractors Boss A Moore have fin ished their grading for the O. It. it C. and trains are now running up into the city. Work on the depot build ing is expected to begin in the near future. Ilev. Mr. Beil a prominent Baptist minister has bought a lot on Victoria Avenue and is having a handsome residence erected. Mr. Bell will soon be one of us. L. Baker is tho con tractor. N. H. Littlejohn is having an ele gant brick building put up on one of his lots on Limestone street. It will be used for the postoffice and other office purposes. L. Bak.*r is the builder. J. Q. Little is having a fine resi dence built on Frederick Street. It will be one of the largest and finest house, in the city and will in every i way bo up-to-date. Mr. Propst is the builder. Prof, and Mrs. S. A. Chambers have rented Mrs. Henoru Gray’s cottage on Logan street and have gone to keep ing house. They were joined last week by their daughter, Miss Mary, who will hereafter reside in Gaffney, In reporting the funeral of Mrs. Brown last week The Ledger inad vertently neglected to say that Prof. IJ. Galfney cannot afford to lose many of her young men of the Claude McArthur stump. Claude was an ideal young man and no one regrets his departure from Gaffney more than The Ledger. Samuel Turner and his little daughter, of Cleveland county X. C., were in tho city last Saturday on u visit to relatives. II. S. Mullins, of Thickety, was in to see us Friday. Mr. Mullins is a farmer of the advanced school and entertains good ideas concerning his avocation. Prentice Jefferies, of Paris, Tex., who has been spending several weeks with relatives in this city, left for home Friday. Mr. Jefferies is con nected with the Wells & Fargo Ex press Company. W. 8. Williams, a former Gaffney- ite but now a resident of Blacksburg, was over on business and pleasure combined last Friday. Kit Carpenter, wife and children of Thermal City, X. C., are in the city visiting relatives and friends. A. R. N. Folger and wife visited relatives at Easley this week. Miss Rosa Gaffney returned last week from Monroe, N. C., where she has been visiting her sister. Mrs. M.il. Gaffney, of Spartanburg, is in tho city visiting her mother-in- law, Mrs. L. V. Gaffney, on Granard street. Kenneth Baker, a prominent cotton buyer of Prosperity, 8. C., is in tho city visiting his parents on Granard street. Miss Mollie Montgomery, of Mercer, is visiting friends and relatives in the city this week. (’apt. J. B. Bell spent a few days in Charleston this week on profes sional business. A. P. Austell and wife, of Slices, X. G., spent Saturday and Sunday in the city the guest of relatives. Mr. Austell is a friend of The Ledger and took occasion to renew his alle giance while here. G. W. Jones, the stock man, of Ottaway, Term., spent several days in the city last week. Mr. Jones is one of Tennessee’s most genial gen tlemen and is always welcome in Gaffney. C. X. Robertson and Zed Jenkins, of Henrietta, X. C., spent Sunday in tire city. They came down to see a daughter and sister, respectively, who are attending Cooper Limestone. Isom and Jas. Richardson arrived home from tho west Saturday. Both are looking well and are as jovial as ever. Mrs. Martha Macomson, of Mercer, is tire guest of her daughter, Mrs. W. W. Gaffney, on Granard sreet. Mrs. W. W. Gaffney and daughter, Wilma, returned homo Sunday from Mercer where they have been visiting the past week. Mrs. J. W. Schell, of Fountain Inn, passed through the city Friday en route for Mercer where she goes to visit her parents. Mrs. R. A. Robison and son, Percy, of Spartanburg, are visiting Mrs. A. V. Montgomery, on Montgomery St. Miss Addie McArthur came over from Rock Hill Tuesday to attend her sister’s wedding. A. K. Hosong, of Allen’s Bridge, Term., a stock raiser, is in the city for a stay of several weeks. Mr. Paul Simpson, one of the pop ular proprietors of Glenn Springs was in Gaffney lust week on u visit to Col. T. Stobo Farrow and family. The exercises will begin at 10 o’clock, and Dr. Montague will be the speaker. It is earnestly desired that all the Baptists of all the churches in the community will he present. Let every one who can bring a basket with him and all will take dinner at the spring. There will be an afternoon mass-meeting. The committee on programme are anxious for all the churches in the Broad River Association to send dele gates to the Sunday school conven tion which will meet at Providence on Friday and Saturday before the fifth Sunday.
